  • Wow...

  • darjeeling limited sent me here.

  • There are a couple of verses missing from this version. There should be a verse about the embassy parties and one about her being in between 20 and 30.

  • Give us a break withe the lyrics... "To shake off their lowly BROWN tags" should be "To shake off their lowly BORN tags"

  • Can anyone confirm or not whether this song is about the gorgeous Sofia Loren? a couple of stories floating about..........Ta.

  • @bri944 no. Sofia Loren always avoided to get sun tan, and she really hated the rolling stones...

  • it's a creepy song come to think of it, ha ha

  • Love this song, but what is up with all those weirdos trying to dance?

  • @maxneu 60's. Probably all stoned. Also it's a slow smooth song.

  • @maxneu It was a pop song of the time, If you were in the audience you danced. Full stop.

  • He not asking would she rather sleep alone. He's asking what are your dreams, passions, and desires. He knows her better than anyone.

  • top class always loved this song

  • Love all of Peter Sarstedt's music. His whole style, really. Even his 1969 hair. I also very much enjoyed Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree.

  • Peter Sarstedt wrote the song about a girl he fell madly in love with in Vienna in 1965.She died in a hotel fire.

  • Ha-Ha-Ha...it is So... true! agree with schnurrecat, somehow it doesn't matter...

  • It is actually rumoured that Peter Sarstedt wrote this song for Sophia Loren. I think it's wonderful!

  • @estiferr1 Burt Btarach wrote it for the movie in 1970,BUTCH CASSIDY and the Sundance Kid

  • @123RIOBRAVO That is interesting, I am sure youre right, maybe that's just what my mother told my sister and I and we liked that story :) Either way, one of my favourite song ever!!

  • @123RIOBRAVO I don't think Burt Bacharach wrote this song for the Butch Cassidy and Sundace Kid soundtrack. I believe it is written and performed by Peter Sarstedt as a standard album/ single track. This song does dont feature on the original motion picture soundtrack. The title track to motion picture soundtrack is "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" by Burt Bacharach.

  • it doesn't matter what you get or,to whom you become. deep inside you will ever be that little child you once are have been. you can wear masqueades, but those, who know you will see how empty your life is,what a lie your life is,how lonely you are

  • Absolute Bloody Magic!

  • "I promise I will never be your friend."

  • haha i love this song had it stuck in my head for the last week

  • I thought it was about Sophia Loren. I like his clear diction and mid-atlantic accent, and have been using it in listening exercises in my English classes.

  • a very beautiful song, some time back in the 70s, I am sure this was released, so full of love and imagination

  • What year was this released in? :) I want to know how long its brilliance has lasted so far.

  • one of the best songs ever writen i have not heard a better one in last 15 years or so

  • This is one of my Karaoke favourites

  • Loving his hair do.

  • thx to fotc i can only think of these lyrics to the tune of "piano man"

  • There was a time when every roadside busker had this as part of their repertoire, along with Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, and Neil Diamond.

The real subject of this song was a teenage girl who he met while on holiday in France with his family as a kid. She died in a hotel fire I believe.

  • this song is the best I ever heard,,,remember it sins way back in 60 or 70 s,,,love this song...Charlie lao Stockholm..

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever written

  • Who else was sent here by Wes Anderson's Hotel Chevalier?

  • Is about a girl who lives in her own world ,shes not who she is,but that what she wants to be, shes a fake or so to speak.

  • I feel in love when I listen this song! Madly!

  • Peter Sarstedt wrote the song about a girl he fell madly in love with in Vienna in 1965. She died in a hotel fire. The song was written in Copenhagen (confirmation of this fact can be found on the CD cover of The Best of Peter Sarstedt, EMI, nr. 8297622)

  • I only heard this song when Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French sang it in one of their shows

  • I love this song!!!!

  • Continental sounding song is lovely indeed!

  • How dumb are you lot? It's obvious what the song's about.

  • i bought an accordian, just so I could do the intro for this song. Love it and Peter forever.

  • THANK YOU MY MATE IS DYING FROMN TERMINAL CANCER AND THIS 1 WE SING TOGETHER EVERY NIGHT .....................NOW I KNOW HE WILL LIVE FOREVER

  • another song reminding me of my early childhood.

still a jolly singalong song.. all these years later

  • As far as I've heard he's singing about at Danish high society girl, who became a quite succesful singe in her home country in the sixies.....Rest is up to you

  • Love this wee tune ;)

  • Hey does anyone have the video Stanley Baxter did to this song its hilarious!

  • Thanks for putting this up. For some reason the song pop

  • Life is like this song...

  • I was born at the start of the 60's and I remember as I got older that the general consensus was that this song was about Sophia Loren. Might Have just been talk though.

  • My understanding is that this song is writen in memory rof his former girl friend who was killed in a house fire.

  • its suposed to be about sophia loren

  • I'd agree wiht the inner outer bit most. He's more balanced on his trip up while she either sells herself or more likely represses her past from herself overall I wouldn't overthink it though lol it's in my mind a song thatm eant to make people feel melancholic

  • You need to realise that the need to realise is a realisation in its self.

  • I've always thought her to be his sister;

    "Two children begging in rags"

Why would he say "Two" w/o mentioning the 2d person?

The singer must be referring to himself.

  • But where do you go to my lovely

When you're alone in your bed

Tell me the thoughts that surround you

I want to look inside your head

Those are the kinds of questions you would expect to come from her director, her cameraman, or perhaps her rehab therapist! The point is that their shared background means he already knows the answers. He want her to know them as well.

  • I take his whole perspective as a comment on the differences between inner-directed and other-directed people.

She has, for now, achieved more success than he has. But the price she has paid is to be other-directed, totally dependent on what her admirers think of her. She may have no identity in and of herself.

He is more inner-directed, with his own personal compass. He may not have been as visibly successful, but he is his own.

He feels pity, not malice, toward his old friend.

  • love this song first hear it on the radio on a 60s an 70s show wit my dad

  • did you? well that must have been very hard for you. My deepest sympathies and my condolences to you and your co-worker:)

  • and what hits have you recently released?

  • I know where you go to my lovely

When you're alone in your bed

I know the thoughts that surround you

'Cause I can look inside your head

  • Why get so worked up about such an old classic? Comments like yours are very revealing! You know what kind of person you are and how badly you need therapy! Now, unfortunately everyone that reads your pathetic comments knows too. You should think before you type next time moron!

  • You have a point, but please note you're getting worked up too

  • LOL

  • Such a good song.

  • i love this song for the music...and music only...i cannot stand the words..it makes me angry that the character in this song(the male that is)is trying to be self righteous thinking he is smarter and better than the lady who has actually made something of herself while he is still in shit!!!

  • listen again its not what he's singing about.he is singing about his childhood friend who has grown up and forgotten where she has come from.

he's saying that deep inside she is still the little girl he knew when they had nothing but she puts on airs and graces but he knows the truth.

  • i've listened to it about a million times...the song is very nice(music wise)...but the words get me really annoyed....especially with what he is saying!

sorry i don't agree with you but thats how i feel about it..the male is question shouldnt worry about where she comes from but leave her be and let her live the life she wants to live!

  • I'm a bit surprised people feel what he is saying is nasty so I'm glad you posted this more insightful comment. Just one point though, I don't think he cares that she puts on airs and graces, I think he's concerned that her life is lonely because nobody really cares about her and nobody really knows who she is.

  • (by you I meant ecc84 below)

  • @ecc84 yes but try and hear the full vershion. I think the TV would not let him sing about her frim and inviting body ? must be a BBC recoreding. there are two parts of vers missing and one line is "But you live on a glittering stage yes you yes you do" it's a little bitter. I haqve not found the full vershion on youtube yet if I do I will let you know it must be out there ???

  • lmao

  • I find the words and music go together. The british articulation expresses beautifully the melancholic feeling of sombody seeing 'the residential life' from the outside, and also of somebody being in love with an person he can't reach

  • I don't get the impression he's still in shit. He has probably also come up in the world, though perhaps not as successfully or visibly as she has.

The first time I heard this song, I thought that perhaps he might be the director casting for a film in which she was being considered:

    I've seen all your qualifications

    You got from the Sorbonne

And the painting you stole from Picasso

Your loveliness goes on and on, yes it does

  • thats your opinion and your entitled to it as i am to mine,

    take care.

  • Agreed.

He obviously knows her well to ask about what she does alone in bed. If a girl like that goes to bed alone it can only be by choice! And who but an old friend would know that given the choice she prefers to sleep alone?

  • @Wwyzzard he doesn't ask her what she does alone in bed he asks where do you go to as in dreaming about growing up on the streets of Naples.

  • @JLBJoanneB Thanks. I didn't see that. Obviously he knows her well. If he is her old childhood companion, it seems he has also come up in the world. But he is not as public about it. Perhaps he is a rehab therapist and she turns up as his patient?

  • @Wwyzzard If you go to sleep it don't matter if you're rich, normal or poor. Than it's just plain you

  • @Wwyzzard

perhaps he knows that you can be alone even if someone is lying next to you ...

  • I love and hate songs like these, all time classics, i love them because they are simply magnificent but i hate the memories it drags up when i relate it to myself. Does anyone have no regrets?

  • no everybody has regrets but your right this tune brings back all the memories

  • my das song love it

  • Always one of my favourites.

Thanks for putting up the lyrics, although you made a couple of mistakes.

    It should read:

"And I wonder if they really care, OR give a damn"

    and

"To shake off their lowly BORN tags,"

    otherwise, nice job!

  • And it's Juan-les-PINS

  • love this

  • Enchanting even after all these years. Love it !
