  • It's the sweetie man....!

  • Sharlto is awesome! Good to see that the movie industry has recognized his talent even when Hollywood didn't.

  • Hi there, I've seen the interviews you've posted around YouTube...wanted to say thanks, they've been great!

I recently finished a music video I made for District 9...a Tribute to Wikus! I would love to hear your opinion on it. Please have a watch whenever you can!

  • I will be forever grateful that we got District 9 instead of a Halo movie.

  • Aww, he's cute and a great actor. He's like a shorter, comedic version of Christian Bale. lol

  • Click the soccer button. It really makes you feel like your in south Africa with sharlto.

  • The story about the stunt guy is not anywhere near as entertaining as you fools make it out to believe. What a let down.

  • Cute Accent

  • movie was better than i thought would be but no as good as i wanted it to be

  • What a great movie, what a great actor and what a great guy.

  • X-D

  • Aw the story about the stuntmen is really funny and cute. I love Sharlto!

Thanks for putting this vid up DarkAngel66a!!!

  • its pronounced V-kUS vun da merva

  • umm no...

its pronounced vic/kus fun da mah/rrrr/va

  • Not completely right either. The easiest way to get to know how it's pronounced is to put it through a text-to-speech program with a Dutch voice.

The English "v" is quite close to the Dutch "w". Just push out less air and you've got it.

With English tones, it's pronounced as:

    Veekuhs vahn duh mehrvuh

"ee" as in Leek (IPA: /iː/).

"uh" as in Bonus (IPA: /ə/)

"ah" as in Luck (IPA: /ʌ/)

"eh" as in Dress (IPA: /e/)

It's a Dutch name, and I'm Dutch ^_^ So it's really easy for me :)

  • Yes that is the Dutch way to pronounce it.

But the Afrikaans way to pronounce it is the way i posted it above.

I'm South African and Afrikaans is my second language, and its a South African movie.

Afrikaans is an amalgamation of Dutch, German, and other languages. So pronunciation will be different to plain Dutch.

  • I know Afrikaans is an amalgamation, and I know very well that it's a South African movie.

I didn't know the pronunciation would be that different though. I didn't know, for instance, that a final -e would be pronounced as an "ah" sound. The official IPA said it ended in /ə/, anyway.

  • it's not quite 'ah', but more like an 'æh' sound.

Not sure if your familiar with the topography of South Africa, but in the province, Western Cape, pronunciation of the language in general is more like Dutch.

  • I see! That's interesting, I didn't know about that ^_^

  • I wish they'd say his name so i know exactly how to say it

  • It's SHARL-toe COP-lee (not COPE-lee)

  • ok...i pronounced his first name right! much appreciated
