saddam hussain intention was to fight the SHAH military of that time. At that time people of iran was against shah so what i have understood is Saddam Hussain tried to side up the people of iran by fighting the military of shah but it may be it was the interest of people could be more nationalist than islamic

Some people might have the misconception that this was a Shia-Sunni war as the majority of the arab countries were backing Saddam Hussein..

but the truth is that Saddam invaded IRAN to protect his dictatorship and crush the revolution that was firing up in his own country after overthrowing of the Shah in Iran..and the majority of the Arab regimes(not the people) backed Saddam as they themselves feared if IRAN was successful it would lead to an Islamic uprising in their countries too..
