For once ... for once in my hockey fandom life am I glad I didn't watch this on one of the canadian national stations as Emrick's call was incredible. ok i watched the video and it does look like simmonds is going for the puck, but malkin didnt even extend his elbow. i still think the correct call would be elbowing. you see something like that happen 3 or 4 times a game. intentional knee to knee contact after the puck is gone is way worse than malkins elbow

I hate to ruin everyone's fun, but that's honestly just an incredibly lucky save. If Varlamov had reacted appropriately and slid to the other side in the butterfly, it would have been a simple five hole save because the puck would have just hit his stick. Granted, it's much easier to judge someone when you're not in the moment making the call but I'm just saying.

He shot the puck at the center of the net. He did exactly what you're supposed to do in that situation to get a goal. He put it dead center. The only thing he could have done better was to lift it, but he obviously either couldn't lift it or didn't feel the need to. Varlamov didn't have the center covered at all until the shot was taken. With Varlamov being on the left of the net and the shot taken towards the middle, how is that his side? A shot on the near side would've been too risky

Incredible save and it really allowed Washington to gain momentum from it.

It's plays like this that are why I chose to watch the game on NBC even though I'm a Canadian. I find Doc Emrick entertaining with his million different words he uses to describe the puck moving (skyhooked, fiddled, spirited, waffleboarded, hatcheted, finessed, drubbed, foisted to name a few) and more importantly Emrick obviously still has his eyesight as he was able to see that was a save unlike Bob Cole.
