  • Jamie Dick (The Young Boy) actually lived on my street in Toronto? Pretty Cool! You can also catch him on one of The Littlest Hobo shows

  • This song also plays in the ice-skating scene from the slasher film "Curtains"

  • @HeathenBiologist At last someone wrote this. Was played in 2 scenes. The girl played it in the BMW 6-series, and the other one played it on the ice. Great song and freaky movie

  • This movie is on Amazon. They have the VHS for like 15 bucks (well worth every penny.)

  • Burton hit #37 in Billboard, 10-24-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • I'm obsessed with this movie! Unfortunately: I've tried for 3 years to get this movie... But; for some reason; or another, it's unobtainable??? UGH!

  • @ShellTrek Me, too! Cannot find it anywhere!! If you ever find it, let me know where, please.

  • @ShellTrek Send me a note and I can tell you where to get it. Something like "Rare DVD's and Movies" tge UK. I was like 15 including postage and took all of 4 days to get to me from the time I ordered it to the time I recieved it. It was copied from the original film reel.

  • "Melanie" was a "little known" film from sometime in the 80s. It also has a VERY young Don Johnson in it.

The film really did not do that great at the box office, but to this day it remains one of my favorites! It is hard to find now, but IF you cann get your hands a copy, it's worth just for the music in it alone!

  • ANOTHER TIMELESS CLASSIC FROM BURTON!!!!! JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! :) SO PROUD TO BE CANADIAN!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE POST IDOLAMERICA!!!!! :) FR; NINA IN BEAUTIFUL ONTARIO!!!!

  • You saved my Soul Burton!

  • Man, Glynnis was hot back then, I would have fought Don Johnson for her

  • I forgot to mention - I'm 59 yrs old & just recently was cleaning the house up/out. I gave my kids ALL of our old VHS tapes, EXCEPT this one. It stays with me forever & they'll not get it until I'm gone. (unless I invest in a VHS to DVD recorder). I'm a die hard romantic & this movie has it all, along with BC's amazing music!

  • @diroba001 Can't find this anywhere so please invest in a VHS to DVD recorder - love this movie

  • OMG,, I accidentally saw this movie back in 84 or so & totally fell in love with it,, & had to search high & low to find the music/song. I recorded the movie & saved it to watch with my girls when they were old enough. An amazing story line with totally awesome Burton Cummings music! **Recognize the very young Don Johnson?

  • Heard this song this past weekend on a repeat of Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from 1981. Hard to believe this only made #37... it deserved better. My uncle is a major Burton fan and I certainly can't fault him for that - the man can SING. "Dream Of A Child" is my favorite song of his.

  • ummmm, loving me some Burton Cummings!! I actually found this movie years ago on ebay! Bought it just because of Burton Cummings! I am a die hard fan from the 70's!!!

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!

  • I absolutely love this movie!! Just saw it tonight and hadn't seen it in years. That song still gives me chills to this day.

  • This was the first time that I ever heard Burton Cumming sing. Wow, I was 8 and totally fell in love.

  • I have no idea why I watched this movie- I think my wife made me watch it with her. The movie was forgettable, but I always loved this song.

  • I wish Elvis and Burton could have song a few songs together. It would have been awesome.

  • I played guitar with Burt in this movie. The concert was filmed at the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Toronto, and certain songs from the concert were inserted directly into the film, another example being "Something Old, Something New". We later recorded the soundtrack in Hollywood, but they decided to keep some of the "live" recordings in the film, as they had that raw, "edge". I still have that lovely gray suede jacket he wears in this clip, in my closet. Anybody want it?

  • @SD2TX Hi, which gitar did you play, as I so totally love this song and what it means. And if you played this, I am so impressed, and as one of about 480 who have done what I have done in my life, that is so much of a compliment.

Thank you for all the info.

I bought a copy of this movie, on disc, taken from the original reels from a company in England. Had the tape, but wore it out and it is almost impossible to find.

Was my wedding song in 1981.

    That jacket? I'll take it.

  • i absolutely loved this movie and have it on an old vhs tape..go me!!

  • One of his very BEST.thanks

  • Burton was great in this movie and the songs were upstanding. The movie is very hard to get which is a shame. It was really a good movie with notable actors and I will repeat myself with great music from a great talent. They need to put this movie on DVD.

  • @tjerwin1 Shoot me an email, and I'll send the info. It is available in Great Britain.

    Joseph F

  • Burton played a musician in this movie on early HBO,..it was a good acting job Burton put on,it was a pretty good movie havent seen it since

  • Sure, d2pwow. Burton WAS the voice of the Guess Who. Peace.

  • Hey, gvbezoff, I meant in terms of US top 40 hits. '"Stand tall' was Burton's 1st solo 1, and 'You saved my soul' was his other 1, here in the states. That's my definition of hit artists. Those songs which make the top 40 here in America. Peace.

  • @DaveWollenberg ,

Okay, but just to be clear, you are familiar with Burton's body of work, right? The man has the most beautiful vocals in rock history.

  • @DaveWollenberg That's a very limited definition, since only about 5% of the world's population lives in the USA. The other 95% of the world doesn't count? My definition of a hit song is one that reaches the top 40 in any country in the world.

  • @gvbezoff

We have all beat Dave up for a comment that we misinterpreted. Everyone sees an issue from his or her own perspective. Dave is right in that so many of Cummings' wonderful solo tunes didn't get the play they should have in the US. His voice is so distinctive that he should have more recognition than he has gotten in the US.

  • @d2pwow Well, it was not my intention to "beat up" anybody. I simply wished to disagree with Dave and call into question his definition of a hit song. I thought my comments were well reasoned and inoffensive.

And no, Burton never got the worldwide recognition he deserved. In my mind, he is the real "piano man", his talent eclipsing that of the "false" piano men Elton John and Billy Joel. But I would appear to be in the minority with that opinion.

  • Sorry gvbezoff. I meant no disrespect, nor did I mean to insert myself into your conversation with Dave. I whole-heartedly agree with you concerning Burton's talents on the piano. He is awesome on those keys. But his voice! Oh Lord, what a beautiful voice. AND he bangs out heart-rending lyrics, on top of all else. Frankly, he's what the students I teach refer to as a Baller". Take the ball, big, bad BURTON!

  • Hey, Joseph F, 'Star baby' was a Guess Who hit, not a solo by Burton. Peaked at #39 in Billboard in '74. It's on YouTube, check it out!

  • 'Saved' Burton from bein' a 1-hit wonder. His other 1 was 'Stand tall' from Jan. '77.

  • I guess you never heard of "The Guess Who"?

Only one of the very best of the great country of Canada.

    Joseph F

  • Guess you never heard "Star Baby", either.

    Joseph F

  • One hit wonder? What about "I'm Scared", "My Own Way to Rock", "Break it to Them Gently", "Dream of a Child", "Take One Away", "Heavenly Blue", "I Will Play a Rhapsody", "Fine State of Affairs", "Timeless Love", "Your Back Yard", "Something Old Something New", "Charlemagne", "Takes a Fool to Love a Fool", "Draggin 'Em Down the Line", "Meanin' So Much", "Free", "We Just Came From the USA", "Dream", "Any Minor Miracle", "Kurt's Song", "Pretty Pictures", and more but I am out of characters.

  • there was a movie that Burton cameo'd in where he played the piano naked, does anyone rem the movie?

  • Garyv the movie was called Melanie and Burton Cummings had a starring role not a cameo.

  • I have it on video and watch it about once a week!!

  • It comes from the movie "Melanie" and Burton did a lot more than a cameo. The title of the movie is also on the credits at the top left of this page. Geez!

  • @Garyv1233 I saw this movie when it first came out at The Odean theatre in Winnipeg. The theatre was originally called The Walker Theatre and now it is called The Burton Cummings theatre. I remember Burton Cummings walking into the West End Community Club in 1968 to watch the band I was in play a Guess Who song. That community club is now called The Burton Cummings Community Centre. Don Johnson was in the movie Melanie before he became a big star in the TV show Miami Vice.

  • If anyone wants a copy of this movie, taken from the original film, give me a note. I'll respond with the info where I bought it, from Britian.

Took all of 4 days and cost about 16.00US.

  • We first saw this movie in the 80's, used to get it at the local video store. We loved it , especially the music! Then all of a sudden it was gone.... 1 video store in town had it for a while, then it disappeared too. Then we started looking for a copy, at first it was 79.95 vhs, didn't get it, too expensive. then it was GONE, disappeared, We figured it had something to do with the music copyright.

  • Unfortunately, a lot of movies presented the same problem. In the old days, the video distribution model was rental vs. sell thru pricing. Former was quite high and wasn't meant for sales to anyone other than video stores. Really popular titles came out sell thru right from the start. Titles then eventually went on moratorium and unless there was a decent projected demand, they didn't become available again. Even Disney titles have been in this model. A shame. Lots of good movies missed.

  • I bought this from England about 4 months ago. I can send you the address if you want. See my above note.

  • "Teach me how to fly, and pick me up when I'm fallin'"

One of the most poingiant lines in all of music.

  • Burton's the Best.

  • Got this movie from a fellow in Britain who specializes in hard to find music videos. Cost less than 20.00 USD and is from the original movie. Write if you want more info.

  • I got the live version from itunes but I prefer this one if anyone knows where I can get it...

  • I wish there were a single of this recording. I've got one released in 1993 from a concert performance. LOVE this movie!!!

  • I'm there, I had forgotten all about it, too young to really understand it at the time, or to take the time to understand it then, now I really appreciate it.

  • great great song good movie thanks for sharing been looking for this song a long time

  • I think, after living for 61 years, and loving music before I could walk, that out of everything, this is at least in the top 10 of all time. Just so pretty and understandable of various life situations.

    Thank you Burton.

  • Beautiful song from a Great Canadian artist - ty for posting!!!!!

  • I love this song.. the man has a heavenly voice!! back when songs had a meaning!!

  • I love this movie. Also the songs from Burton are some fine tunes. I still have this flick, and it will always be pricless.

  • hehe...the kid's name is Jamie Dick

  • Love this song!

It shows the total lack of heart and emotion today's music has. This song wasn't about "image" as most of today's songs

are. It's a beautiful ballad by a great

    singer, in Burton Cummings.

The movie was good as well. Would have liked to have seen Burton box Rocky after. LOL!

  • Paul Sorvino has been in so many films and shows, very faimiliar face. Don Johnson has never been my cup of tea. The most beautiful person in this movie is Burton.

  • I love this song, and I love Burton, but I hate that this film is so hard to find (unless you want to pay $40 or more).

  • I know I have found it for more as well, sure wish that I could find a cheap copy... Excellent movie... I loved Burton Cummings

  • I have the movie Melanie. Will sell a burned copy cheap

  • could i get a copy of melanie from you?

    thanks a lot,,

  • contact me id love a copy of melanie

  • I love the shot of Garry Peterson on the drums near the end.

  • Never saw the movie but sure know the song. This vignette makes the movie appear to be an emotional rollercoaster ride. Does anyone have a more angelic voice then Burton?

Remember 1977's "I'm Scared?" Talk about sitting in the front pew. Thanks for the posting of a great tune!

  • NDP crack... but good for it's time. Makes me regret I wasn't a Waffler.

  • Thanks! I love this movie. Found it on eBay,probably bootleg, but I was still glad to get it. I've watched it 50 times and I still love it.

  • A special person has done me a damned big fav with a song having to with "MELANIE".After `bout 10 years of hope, to what i was looking for i finally found what i was looking for!! I LOVE this flick. Its just a crying shame that such a movie isnt more popular!! THANKS for posting!!!

  • Great song and great movie. Classic. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for posting this video! "I'm in the nude for love". I won a contest from a radio station to go to the premier of the movie in Toronto, was picked up by limo, stayed in a fancy hotel and attended the after premier party...was very cool...Burton performed solo on the piano. Glynis O'Connor and Don Johnson werent there...just all the Canadian actors!

  • loved the song and the movie. wish i could get the movie!!!!

  • Check out ebay - you'll find it! It's on there once in a while. Good luck!

  • Haha! Don Johnson! LOL! I liked the song though.

  • It's funny - I saw this movie when I was 17, and for some reason this song really stuck me (not a song a 17 year old would usually relate to). In 1989 I found Burton's 1978 album that had this song in a used record store in St. Catharines. Still have it. Still play it.

  • This is my single most favorite song of Burton's single career. I own the terrific movie that it belongs to. Thank you for posting this awsome video.

  • awesome song.

  • Thanks for posting this! I loved this movie.

    Great songs, great singer!

  • Burton rocked back then and he still does!!

  • One awesome movie, starring one AWESOME singer !!!! Thanks Burton
