Awesome video. A lot of the older guys in my corps knew Alex but I was born just a little after his time unfortunately. I wish I could have met him and seen him and his corps in person.
Hi just wondering if you have anymore clips of B-Cal as my father in law Brian Johnston played in B-Cal alongside Alex on drums. He sadly passed away 2 years ago and any footage would be appreciated
I love how their hands appear to move so effortlessly, yet their faces seem to say "yes, this does indeed require 100% of the coordination I can muster!"
@robandrene I was there aswell in 79 and won 3rd place with Kinneill. Top secret from Switzerland are not a patch on this. They are just precise with drill but what they play is sooooooo basic. This here is ahead of its time. Hat raised !!!!!
@agricolae101 In 1979 the World Championships were held in Nottingham. I know, I was there. If you want to verify, I suggest you go to the RSPBA website and look at who/where the 1979 World's were. I don't know if they ever went to England again or not, but for one year they did. I know......I was there....and was almost arrested.....
@robandrene Further to agricolae 101, I too was at Nottingham's Wollaton Park to see the massed pipes and drums in 1979. However, as I was only nine years of age, I cannot remember if it was the World Championships or not. All I know there were around 109 bands present and they all came together at the end of the day to play a massed drum salute and marches. The atmosphere was absolutely electric.
Excellent, I'm sure this is the clip recorded and shown on the programme Gracenotes and it was the only time drumming was shown. Short lived programme sadly. Can anyone name the other drummers? I'm a piper and sure someone told me Eric Ward was part of this corps, is he and who else?
martiplug, from Big Alex's, left you have Jim Collins, Arthur Cooke and Alex's life long good friend Bert Barr.
Safetyleader, this was on the BBC's "Pipers Tune" hosted by Seamas MacNeill, aired in the early 80's.
DougDinsdale, yes there are but I still haven't figured out how to post vids on the web yet-!! In fact SSA76 got his stuff from my library. One day if I can figure out how to do it, I'll share my research material with ya'll, out of respect for the big man's memory.
What a pleasure to hear this again. I first heard it as a young boy, now I'm nearly 50, but it hasn't lost its appeal. The drum corps of today could learn alot from Alex Duthart. I'm a piper by the way.
SSA76...You struck again! For many years I wondered if I'd ever see film or video of the Big Man. Last year you posted one or two. Now you've put up FIVE in about a week!!!
I wonder if there are any of just him playing solo?
They are unbelievable I'm currently learning that salute and it is the most complicated score I have ever seen! These men are amazing!

@agentknyne I think they where Clansman drums by a company called Rose-Morris, which where fairly popular in the 1970's and early 80's

He was truly the KING.
So how do you think we felt when Paisley Pipe Band led by Norrie Thomson won the indoor drumming at Bellahouston.
We not only used back sticking but threw the sticks in the air.
Who was first to congratulate us ? ALEX DUTHART.
He then asked Norrie to show him how. The rest is history.
Long live the KING.

Human beings are so funny. We like to bang around on things like a bunch of monkeys. It's great to be a part of this species sometimes.

Alex had the most dynamic hands that ever touched a pair of sticks. The greatist drummer of my lifetime and a great instructer..
