Tremendous guitar playing. I'm actually unfamiliar with Nugent's work(though I've heard his name), but both of them are very inspired in their playing on this clip. It's not often that guitar works well by itself but this is a pleasing exception. Thanks for sharing it.
Mike Pinera was so much better than Ted it isn't funny, Ted looks like he's lost. Mike is solid and Ted's Rhythm is out to lunch. I saw this thing live and it wasn't even a contest. Ted only plays in baby tuning, those of you who don't get that probably never will.
This is a very long time ago. I don't know what this clip proves either way exactly. I can tell you one thing, I saw Uncle Ted live in Indianapolis last year. Make no mistake the man can play. I have seen some great guitarist live: steve vai, eric johnson, kenny wayne shepherd, etc.. Ted can hold his own live, trust me.
He played for two hours and did not miss a note. Never heard such a wall of sound that came from those 5150's that night. Very underrated player imho.
It's kind of funny you'll notice after watching it a few times. At the beginning, when they first cut over to Ted.... he's like, come on' man.,, lets get this jam going! lol. Like he's not use to waiting second on stage & Mikes kind of endulging in the moment! ^_^
In this clip I think the story went that Ted turned his amp down out of respect for Mike. Ted was just coming along & Mike had been around for awhile.
@TheSanityInspector Are you referring to the albums that both of them put out between the 2? Or do you mean skill in general? I don't know Mikes pretty good man. I'm sure he wouldn't have had any trouble keeping up with Ted. :-) But yeah, Ted put out better music, sure.
@LoganUpABongHit I saw Ted Nugent when he was in his ear-shattering prime, at a time when Blues Images was just a memory of the hippy daze. I guess my impressions are colored by that. watch?v=cYOV8uu17t0

If you look at Ted's bio those guitaists mentioned are his hero's. I agree with everything else. My first band I used a LPB1 un hooked my speakers during TN songs and hooked up a PA horn for more highs and feedback.
Pinera's band was the Blues Image. Thee Image was a concert club on Sunny Isles Beach where they were one of the regular bands. ( I saw Led Zeppelin there in 1969). Blues Image was very popular in Miami. They were a Latin influenced rock-blues band well known in Miami before Santana. Listen to REality Does Not Inspire from their first album. I saw the Amboy Dukes at MIA Marine Stadium at about this time and Mike Pinera came on and jammed with them. Afterwards Ted Nugent jumped in the water.
Great Performance... it's rare to see those kind of jam ...and it's very instructive... i respect Nugent stuff back in the 70s (but not that much later) and Pinera work on Metamorphosis made it become my fave Iron Butterfly LP...
but it seems impossible to listen to a song by Thee Image on the web (Pinera's band in 73-75)...
I don't find them nowhere...it's quite frustratin...i don't have an idea of their sound
I remember back in the day seeing Pinera tour with first his band Cactus then later he changed the name of the band to "Thee Image". He was always a great guy...put on a good show then come out and talk with us afterwards.
Nugent is a better guitarist but Mike could still put on a show.
somebody needs to find a way to make Ted louder or get a better version of this video up but still thank you conkyjoe for actually having this to put up
Wow ! Tear away the cobwebs. Pinera was always one of my favorite performers while growing up in Miami. I even remember seeing him at "the Experience" in N. Miami Beach when he was about 18. He was the best Hendrix cover ever. I saw him jam with Nugent and Bob Seeger one night at the Thunderbird Drive-in in Ft. Lauderdale. Those were the days ! And, how about all those great concerts at "The Image" in North Miami Beach when "Blues Image" was the house band ! Awesomeness !
@iamthemindseye Thanks for sharing your "rare stories" also with us..All I can say is WOW, is this great stuff or what, and reminds us all of the weight some of us can gain over the years..Mike is huge now (like myself) but a hell of a guy! @russellzmi It's actually spelled Byrdland. That model was named for Hank Garland and Billy Byrd who designed it. Ted was the only one crazy enough to use it for hard rock! I recently heard his first solo album and it was better than I remembered. Good guitar work on it but I think he just kept going down hill after that.
This is great footage!!!! Doubt they really rehearsed it much. Totally organic I bet!!! Can't be compared to Green Day or any other band for that matter. Why? because every player writes a different tune!!! Be it blues, country, rock, punk, metal or any other genre it all has a different flavor cause each player has had a different life experience. Just enjoy the music.
Its easy to recognize Nugent the Fake because all his crap sounds the same. Only in America can you become rich playing the same 3 cords and the same one riff.
@BuyAmerican100 A famous American once said: "It is far better to remain silent & appear a fool than to open one's mouth & remove all doubt."

is it just me or in some parts does Mike Pinera remind you of angus young, kinda similar notes and scales played with loads of vibrato it might just be me though
@beefheart67 I read something years ago, that Nugent and Marino had jams every weekend almost. Ted mentioned that he heard his folks were moving away from Detroit (he was still a minor) and he found out which trucking company they were using and torched their trucks. Probably a slight exaggeration, but a measure of how he loved guitar batttles even then?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What tedious, talentless crap. BTW|, isn't there a video that shows Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush blowing Mr. Ass Scratch Fever off the stage? (after the latter had acted in his usual obnoxious fashion - doubtless ramping up to his role as reich wingnut noise machine personified).
dont often comment in fact first time but us brits getting a bit miffed when you slag of other greats , jimmy . alvin and jimi from your side of the pond enjoy all of them you willl never see them times again , 51 too old to see somme but still young enough to rememember great times
Whatever happened to that interview with Ted from about 1970? Vid was hilarious. Mr Straight-edge Nuge was clearly stoned out of his mind. Far cry from the loudmouth asshole everyone's come to know. There was also a guitar solo from the same clip, with Terrible Ted splayed out on the floor. Nugent's management probably had them removed, no doubt.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ted during the Amboy Dukes era was a true force to reckon with, as evidenced by recordings like "Prodigal Man", "Migration", "Survival of the Fittest", "Renegade", "Hibernation", "Loaded for Bear" and etc.........too bad and so sad that he has not done anything worthwhile in over 30 years....... Mike Pinera also deserves much praise for all his great work during the 60's and 70's!!!!
Ted could keep up with any of them. Ok, he's not as original, but very few ordinary folks could play like him THEN.
Of course everone can do it now and Ted never got much better. HIs playing on Survival of the Fittest was most excellent for that period. My friends and I all played guitar and Ted was every bit as tough to copy as anyone else......BACK THEN.
There were no 'how to' videos. ...hell no vcrs, no internet nothing. Hindsight is wonderful.....but you'd have to have been there
I actually hung out with Pinera a few months back and we talked about this footage. He mentioned the Nugent hadnt ever jammed like this before and was nervous before they went on.
Explains a bit more about why he wasnt as polished as Pinera. But Pinera is an amazing guitarist and is still making some classic jams.
Oh please! Stranglehold is sub-standard work?? Listen to any of his songs ..its sinic bombast rck n roll at its finest. Nobody plays faster. I think his finest sound was with Damn Yankees.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"nobody plays faster"...ya, I remember my first beer to!
How bout' a teddy contemporary from the 70's - Frank Marino, listen to his 'live'-78' recording-LOUD!
During that era Teddy would often creep onto other guitarist stage and challenge them in a guitar duo (very un-cool),it is well known that Frank disgraced Teddy and literally kicked his ass off stage. Ted also got a major flaming from Shawn Lane....know who he was(R.I.P) ?
I have seen Ted numerous times since before you were in diapers.
Its one thing to play for pure speed, but ted incorporates that chuck berry & old black blues heroes into that speed and plays those sets at a blistering pace.
Marino is great and I havent heard that story.Havent heard of Shawn Lane either to be honest. But no matter.
Try "Come Again"(Damn Yankees)
Prodigal Man (Amboy Dukes)
There are dozens of other songs that showcase his speed. I never claimed Ted was the greatest songwriter or singer, and I think his lack of chart hits makes him underrated
@playmayker88 hahaha well lack of chart hits will make anyone seem that way.....Ted likes to diss all the so called druggies that have passed but they all were way better than he could have dreamed of being
Jesus, dude, this was choice footage in terms of its rarity. These kind of jams are always kinda hinky propositions and given how lame tv directors were back in that time about how they mic'ed and mixed rock acts, it is pretty typical that Ted got the short end of the stick soundwise here.
Pinera's performance was a little more polished and focused while Ted was often just noodling, but I was still glad to see this. Definitely a product of its time.
Mike Pinera is the best live guitarist I ever saw, but it was with the Blues Image before he went commercial and joined Iron Butterfly. Ted Nugent had nothing of the fire and soul that Pinera had. This video showed it, though the sound quality isn't very good. If you ever saw the Blues Image live before the Ride Captain Ride days you'd know what I mean. Burning energy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ted played one good lead guitar in his life AND he's been living off that forever. "Journey to the Center Of The Mind." After that it's been all downhill. Everything after is so fucking teeny bopper. He became such a pathetic musician and person too. Sad really.
This is ridiculous! Pinera's amp has volume and distortion, Ted's has neither! Ted got hosed! Probably a consequence of plugging in to what they had sitting around the TV studio, instead of his own gear.
I can't quite see that riff into 'Cat Scratch Fever,' but if you search for 'Stormtroopin',' at the Rockpalast in '76, in one of Ted's solo riffs you'll recognize 'Cat Scratch Fever' there, about a year before the song was recorded. At 9:22, Ted's little riff at the end sounds like 'Below the Belt,' from 'Call of the Wild,' which was mid-'73.
Can anyone identify Ted's amp? At about 5:43, you can see the amp is facing the back wall, which is probably why Ted's sound is so weak.
nugent is a great musician and showman but hes also a right wing douche bag....totally my opininion.....so there...I said it.... pineras amp looks like a musicman....also totally my opinion
Well at least he's not a left wing douche bag! Ha Ha! (you asked for it) Anyway he is a great musician. Probably one of the most under-rated guitar players (probably because he can't keep his mouth shut). Gotta love your Uncle Ted though.
im not a left winger either, though i may be a douche bag, nugent was a decent songwriter but a LAME guitarist and even LAMER singer....I can out play the child molesting, draft dodging, coward......hahaha
Well, in all fairness.. Im sad to hear that side of Ted. He has been a ICON for me growing up. I'm a retired Paratrooper so I gave my country everything I have, but death was not in the cards, although I was prepared with Jesus to die for my country if necessary. Growing up in the seventies, I looked up to Ted and my first concert was the California Jam at the Ontario Motor Speedway. Im still digesting this news you bring to me.
I saw one of their 'guitar battles' in 1974 @ the old St. Bernard Civic Auditorium. I don't even know if it still exists after Hurrican Katrina, but saw a lot of good shows there. In 74, Pinerea was fronting his version of Cactus.
I met Pinera in the 1980s when he played at Hop Singh's before Danny Johnson (Rick Derringer, Steppenwolf) and the Bandits were onstage. I mentioned that I loved what he did with the Iron Butterfly in "Metamorphosis," and he gave me this blank stare as if to say, "Fuck off, you dweeb - life's a blue vein!" (That was the actual name of the song he was promoting at the time! I should look for it somewhere!)
Anyway - despite their differences - both are definitely competing to be "alpha male!"
The only way that could be true is if Barak Obama had some mob thugs inject Ted while he was sleeping; Right after the Nuge performed stud service on Michelle.
jons bin laden is on the terrorist payroll by posting propaganda. I've caught him in 3 lies:
1. He says he avoided injury due to an injury. That is false. By his own admission he "fucked ted" . That got him an "undesirable" for military service due to homosexuality.
2. He said there was a "federal firearm registration" - I proved that false
3. He claims to be doing "this" for a 3 tour Vietnam vet. The vet would have kicked his ass for being disrespectful to other vets.
Posting more of your lies again? I've already proven your "federal firearms registration" to be false. Now you expect everyone to forget you're a liar?
I know him in person my dad is good friends with him

Whatever happened to that interview with Ted from about 1970? Vid was hilarious. Mr Straight-edge Nuge was clearly stoned out of his mind. Far cry from the loudmouth asshole everyone's come to know. There was also a guitar solo from the same clip, with Terrible Ted splayed out on the floor. Nugent's management probably had them removed, no doubt.

Mike Pinera also deserves much praise for all his great work during the 60's and 70's!!!!

zero to do with guitar playing.
truthwhore 2 years ago 3

But Pinera is an amazing guitarist and is still making some classic jams.

thats a stretch of the imagination, musically or otherwise.
Ted was / is a sub-standard guitar player ,that gets easily overlooked by the distraction of his flaming persona.
Don't get me wrong..... he ROCKS!
HALEYSABAI 2 years ago
Oh please! Stranglehold is sub-standard work?? Listen to any of his songs ..its sinic bombast rck n roll at its finest. Nobody plays faster. I think his finest sound was with Damn Yankees.

HALEYSABAI 2 years ago
Its one thing to play for pure speed, but ted incorporates that chuck berry & old black blues heroes into that speed and plays those sets at a blistering pace.
Marino is great and I havent heard that story.Havent heard of Shawn Lane either to be honest. But no matter.
Try "Come Again"(Damn Yankees)
Prodigal Man (Amboy Dukes)
There are dozens of other songs that showcase his speed. I never claimed Ted was the greatest songwriter or singer, and I think his lack of chart hits makes him underrated
playmayker88 2 years ago 9
Look up : Damn Yankees - Come Again Intro (Live in Japan 93)
great stuff
playmayker88 2 years ago
@playmayker88 hahaha well lack of chart hits will make anyone seem that way.....Ted likes to diss all the so called druggies that have passed but they all were way better than he could have dreamed of being
toobmaniac 7 months ago
Ted was unsurpassed in 1970. Shawn Lane was like eons later, cannot compare them.
Not many could play like Uncle Ted back in the day. It took the rest of the world a few years to catch him. The Amboy Dukes ruled Detroit in '69/70.
Ted's best work was 'Survival of the Fittest' I've always thought.
Ted DID admire Frank, he was about 17 at the time and Detroit D.J.'s went nuts over him. But Frank gets boring after a while..... :)

Ted played one good lead guitar in his life AND he's been living off that forever. "Journey to the Center Of The Mind." After that it's been all downhill. Everything after is so fucking teeny bopper. He became such a pathetic musician and person too. Sad really.
cedarvalley 3 years ago
you're an idiot, thumbs down.
Dmonk08 3 years ago 3
This is ridiculous! Pinera's amp has volume and distortion, Ted's has neither! Ted got hosed! Probably a consequence of plugging in to what they had sitting around the TV studio, instead of his own gear.
SonofMorgoth 3 years ago
Damn, hands down this one goes to the Iron Butterfly guy! ...tho it might just be that his amp is so much louder than you cant properly hear Tedzo.
fmix10 3 years ago
marvy1118:
I can't quite see that riff into 'Cat Scratch Fever,' but if you search for 'Stormtroopin',' at the Rockpalast in '76, in one of Ted's solo riffs you'll recognize 'Cat Scratch Fever' there, about a year before the song was recorded. At 9:22, Ted's little riff at the end sounds like 'Below the Belt,' from 'Call of the Wild,' which was mid-'73.
Can anyone identify Ted's amp? At about 5:43, you can see the amp is facing the back wall, which is probably why Ted's sound is so weak.

At around 1:30, Mike starts playing a three chord pattern that sounds similar to Ted's huge hit of several years in the future, 'Cat Scratch Fever.'
marvy1118 3 years ago
Well, in all fairness.. Im sad to hear that side of Ted. He has been a ICON for me growing up. I'm a retired Paratrooper so I gave my country everything I have, but death was not in the cards, although I was prepared with Jesus to die for my country if necessary. Growing up in the seventies, I looked up to Ted and my first concert was the California Jam at the Ontario Motor Speedway. Im still digesting this news you bring to me.

Anyway - despite their differences - both are definitely competing to be "alpha male!"

jons bin laden believes there are invisible men from the CIA watching his every move.
He tries to comment on federal guns laws, but has no clue to what the actual laws are. When he loses a debate, he resorts to 8th grade name calling.

jons bin laden is on the terrorist payroll by posting propaganda.
