Locke is probably my favorite character along with Echo. I love this scene with Locke. I've only seen this series up to a certain part in season 3 but this is byfar the most emotional scenes so far. I love how this scene shows how many terrible things have happened to Locke but right when he feels like he can't go any further, destiny gives him a shove foreward and gives him hope. :)
@AndyDufresne2342 yeh. i just recently saw tht episode. Im almost done with the series. I was disapointed when I found out tht Locke was really dead. lol no matter what there is one truth, Locke's story may have been devestating, but he was still a total badass when they got on the island. :P
I'm currently showing the series to friends who have never seen, and no nothing about the show. They are hooked and we're only on episode 7, I can't wait till we reach episode 19.
This made me feel so angry, I kinda wanted to see Locke run up there and carve his kidney back out of that scumbag lol. Good thing he didn't since that's not who John Locke is, but the fact that i felt so strongly about it just goes to show how powerful this scene is. Well done.
First he pretends to care for john then cons him of his kidney after that he tries to kill him as he pushes him threw a window and now finally has the nerve to dislike this video for shame Mr cooper
I remeber Terry O'Quinn from "Stepfather" . I was a kid back then and he looked pretty scarry to me. When I saw him again in "Lost" it all came back to me. He did a fabulous job in John Locke role. I gotta say that the last season is disappointing. As if the director tried very poorly to unravel very complex story. It all came down to the two **spoiler** and **spoiler***. The series' ending was both impressive and heartbreaking, but the plot of the last season is mediocre.
Now this is what so many people forgot about Lost and made them rant a lot, saying out loud that it was about the island and its mysteries... Good God, this amazing show was about its complex characters, their own struggles with their pasts, their backgrounds and their evolutions throughout the conflicts of the present. Obviously, the setting is very important, but it is nothing without the troubled souls that gave a meaning to it... characters looking for some kind of redemption.
The part of him in the car is just absolutely heartbreaking. This is a guy who has, sort of been alone his entire life. He finally has a connection with somebody, his father, who turns out to be the biggest, most slimy con artist around. Terry O'Quinn does an unbelievable job throughout this entire series despite how many turns his character takes. I think the music during the scene of him in the car is what really makes it spectacular though. The music of "Lost" as a whole is just unbelievable.
Possibly the best ending to an episode in the entire series. It sounds like a sensationalist statement I know, but think about it. (Spoilers ahead) This is back when we don't really know any of the island's mysteries. At this point, we think the (SPOILERS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED) hatch is just old and empty. We don't know the truth about The Others, we don't know all the crazy supernatural things on the island, etc. Hell, the monster still might've been a dinosaur. And then that light goes on...
@dwilliams02 This was a fantastic moment but the Walkabout episode ending in which we find out Locke was in a wheelchair before the crash was even better. That was the moment you truly realized you were watching a special show.
It's true. That was definitely one of the moments where I become completely hooked on the show. I was already pretty hooked by the Pilot, but yeah, that moment you speak of was pretty special too. I just think that the light going on is really what makes this one amazing because it's really the first sign pointing towards the incredible, supernatural aspect that the show takes on.
That endind scene, when Terri O'Quinn yells to the hatch "why did you do this?" just reminds me of Sean Penn in Mistic River, when he finds his daughter's body! Worthy of an Oscar!!
This, along with the ending to 'Walkabout' (where we FIRST realize he was in a wheelchair before the crash) are two of my favourite moments from the whole six series.
Both of them use this theme, 'Locke'd out again', which is briliant, as is O'Quinn's performance.
it's moments like this that will make me treasure LOST for a very long time.
i have to say, this has to be in my top 10 moments throughout the Lost series. Along with the Penny-Desmond-Phonecall, and a few other imense scenes. My favourite Locke scene though!
So do I. I often find that no matter how much I make the righteous and correct moral choice, I always end up alone, just like Locke. It seems us humanists are forever destined to be disappointed...
The real Locke is dead, he was simply a pawn throughout the whole of his life, he was never really special, and that is heartbreaking. I got sick of how many times Locke seemingly switched from being good guy to being the bad guy, from helping out the camp to only caring for himself, but damn, to see how Jack believes Locke after all those years now, for it to all just be void, is really sad. This is my all time favourite score on Lost and this is my favourite Locke episode/scene.
@HealingIsDifficult I think Jack will become a pawn too for Jacob. I think both Jack and Locke are pawns, they're "destiny" is tied with Jacob and his Nemisis and their conflict of good vs. evil.
It's ancient theater terminology meaning "god out of the machine." But what does this mean? Well, when something in a play/presentation would be unable to resolved... the gods would miraculously intervene and solve such-and-such an issue. If anything -- it's a nice way to get out of a bind =]
Deus ex machina is a literary term. It means a quick unforeseeable resolution to a hopeless story, like when Locke is banging on the hatch door, losing his faith in the island, and suddenly the light inside comes on.
He is amazing. I also was knocked out by the scene in which the tour director will not let him on the bus because of his disability; it was heartbreaking. I only started watching this show recently, (I'm watching all the reruns) and am discovering some great writing and acting - very impressive :)
@Splub Jacob chose them and brought them to the island as there lives they left behind they had nothing and John Locke was the only person who realised that
Isnt he. i dont think he is the antagonist of the show, i think charles widmore is. i think ben is just really misunderstood, c'mon, who could blame him on how he turned out, look at his childhood, with a father like his, id be suprised if anybody didnt turn out like ben.
I've never forgotten this scene since the day it originally aired on TV - the acting, the emotions, the music - truly amazing. Without a doubt my favourite moment in Lost history..
You just gotta feel sorry for Locke after everything that he's been through. I'll admit, even if it was acting, I shed a tear or two for the man when I saw this episode.
Yeah, he leaves Boone without telling Jack what happened, causing quite a stir between the two next episode. Man, best moment in Lost so far.. Locke has to be my favorite character for this episode alone.
Sometimes certain scenes transcend everyday television, with a blend of emotional intensity and plot relevance that is nothing short of genius. With the music added, this scene plays the heart strings to perfection.
hes right. dues ex machina dont mean sudden change of plot. it means "born of the machine". so why is this episode called dues ex machina? what machine? what does that have to do with old jonny locke? RIP btw. he was y favorite lost character evn though i knew he was gonna die since season 1. it always happens with old wise mentor character. they never survive
Actually it means "God out of the machine". Its an old greek term that was used when a play ended with a God flying in and making an impossible situation OK. This term was typically applied to playwrights that were not so good, so they had to fix the ending quickly. This is my favorite lost episode. I'm glad they used Dues ex machina in a way that still allowed me to suspend my disbelief.

season 1 lost just completely blows you away doesnt it? 1.58 onwards sends shivers down your spine every time you watch it, particularly "i've done everything you wanted me to do; so why did you do this to me!?" brilliant!
This clip sums up the reason Lost is my favourite show in 5 minutes. The way the flashbacks co-incide with the current story telling, the music, the acting, the emotions it summons, the writing, the direction, everything. In my opinion, one of the greatest scenes in film or television history.
You can't help but feel heartbroken by this scene. I mean, he finally had his father in his life and to have his father turn out to be this greedy, heartless man who uses his trust to take his kidney.
But what really makes this episode epic was how the flashbacks really matched with what Locke was going through in the present. Both storylines were tragic and when they finally come together, you just see not only great storytelling but superb acting as well.
From what I have read the whole Emmy process is stupid. People from Lost have to nominate one episode/person and from there it's judged with other shows.
I personally think that the episode in which you see HOW Locke got handicapped is his best episode, but this DEFINITELY is the best John Locke ending ever! Even better than that of the finale of season 4 XD...
Best lost moment ever. This whole clip, not just the hatch light turning on with him banging on it, the whole thing. His finding out about his dad stealing his kidney, where he goes to his house, where he's in the car beating the inside up, then all of that make the scene with the light. The best ending ever. Period.
That's a good final of episode, it changed my perception about Lost, I've seeing this season again and makes me feel like the show is longer than normal, not like now with the fourth season I'm too talk spanish
The Fourth season is actually slowly returning to true season 1 genius. The last few episodes lately have astounding. This is awesome too. I hope theres another ending as good as this in future episodes.
One of the bests moments of lost. John Locke,a man betrayed for her father...Sorry for my english, i'm spanish but i try to comment the video in english.

Thanks for posting :)

IMO I think this is one of the best episode endings in the entire 4 seasons.

From what I have read the whole Emmy process is stupid. People from Lost have to nominate one episode/person and from there it's judged with other shows.

i think saiyd got nominated this year for the economist which is bull shit because desmond should have gotten it for the constant.

Definitely one of my top 10 Lost moments.

Period.

The Fourth season is actually slowly returning to true season 1 genius. The last few episodes lately have astounding. This is awesome too. I hope theres another ending as good as this in future episodes.

You're right, one of the best moments. This morphed Locke into a massively tragic hero. What music, what genius
