  • This is NOT smooth jazz. If you really want to categorise it...it is more Acid Jazz or Ambient Jazz than anything else. Melody is the focus...accentuated with the groove...you've done a great job.

  • Smooooovve groooooove. Very nice! I like smooth jazz as well other variations of this fine Art.

  • as usual superb playing. please check out my band Every kinda people- Walking by myself on this site.

    Cheers Davy

    bye, Luca

    Milan (Italy)

  • Hi, im in the sixth grade gray middlw school band. I want to know if anyone could get me a great jazz piece for the Tenor Saxaphone.

  • very interesting microphone you have.

  • its a straight condenser mic with a suspension holder. Really good for vocals and such

  • Really enjoyed the soprano solo. I play soprano as well.

  • keep playing bro. i can feel it !!!!!!!!

  • SOunds pretty cool to me. Atmospheric

  • smooth..................... and with a feeling

  • What kind of tenor sax? lol sorry

  • tenor

  • What kind of sax is that?

  • sounds awesome

  • beautiful sir i love i just ordered my first saxophone ill post some of me playing as soon as i can lol like i said simply gorgeous sounds

  • EXACTLY MY STYLE....always good to find people interested in the same sounds as I am

  • i like !!!!!!!!

  • Lovely playing and composition. Please compose and record more! Love the Guild's sound, too!

  • This is awesome! love itt

  • Great job my friend. Some nice soloing on both instruments here. Nice to see the Guild get an airing too! (I think it's a Guild!) All the best CD and coming back at you with a video!

    John

  • Hi John, yes it is the trusty Guild X-150, the nicest Jazzer I have had, beats my 70's 175 hands down. Good to have you back!

  • i am sorry about just leaving that comment it was succint,so you are a cool musician.20.00 for the flute what kind of flute? i have a lot of your stuff saved on my youtube,if it is true you taught yourself then you taught yourself well.have you ever thought about teaching other people to play?i wont take up anymore of your time,i know you rich kids are busy (just kidding) lol.

  • I have deleted the offending comment sorry, (it is not as harsh as it seems here in the UK) Your Mccain comment was far more offensive :-) The flute is a Boosey and Hawkes Regent, plays fine. I have taught myself guitar and sax by listening and copying. I have had a great sax teacher, but he helps me mainly with reading and scales, the improv is up to me :-) Funnily enough someone has approached me for lessons, so I might give it a shot :-)

  • i can not belive you would say something like that,it seems like you have a house and countless instruments and a family and you are very talented, you have a rich ego also,i would expect that kind of comment from a rich kid.someone who wound not understand how much they have and not look down on someone who does not have as much.i thought you were a cool musician, but you come across as an rich kid with the attitude to match.(you must have voted for Mccain)

  • Sorry, you initial comment was just "you must be rich" with no explanation. It is maybe an odd comment to leave, and it is normally the sort of comment I get from haters who somehow think that you need money to be able to play an instrument. That is not the case, my flute cost $20 from a flea market, and my dad has helped me buy a horn recently. I am not rich, I choose to spend my money on instruments and I am pretty much self taught.. Sorry if I offended you

  • you must be rich.

  • I like it. I like it a lot. You got skills.

  • ha read this! i only call this instrument the sex-aphone because if you play this music around women it really turns them on!!! ;)

  • nice job! Great tone.

  • It sounds very well and I find that the melody remains interesting, cheer. Hardest is to make believe that it remains easy, but you arrive has that because you are a good musician....bravo

  • I like this more every time I listen to it. It's definitely starting to grow on me.

    Excellent work, Matt...

  • Hi,Mathew. I´d really like your "Lester/Stan" style. How many hours practice for day???. Thanks for your constant support for the sax player in all over the world.-

    Martín

  • Hi Martin, I play for about an hour a day, sometimes more (2 hours max) sometimes less, but every day. I get itchy fingers if I don't :-) Thanks for the comment!

  • Whilst I always enjoy all of your music I think the thing that stands out about this piece is that it is your own. I'd really like to hear more of it.

  • Mathew, you've got to stop being so modest! I really enjoyed this and I've never been a fan of Smooth - till now!

I think the melody is really catchy and the whole thing was well arranged. Really well done. Inspirational. I'm sure you could do this sort of thing for a living if you wanted to.

  • Thanks robalexwar. I suppose I am just realistic. I am always proud of the music I make, or I would not post it, it is just that I compare it to pro stuff, and there is a long way to go yet..... I am particularly pleased that you like this, because it was all my own work. I think I can do better, but not with the limited time I have to record stuff (this was 2 hours total, some people spend that on a bass part!) Thanks again, and g'day!

  • Great sound! Really enjoyed this! It's amazing that you did it all yourself and this is certainly much higher quality sound and musicianship than typical 8 person guest groups that play at the end of late night shows.

I rather enjoyed the grimace at the end of the guitar solo - finally a break in the British stiff upper lip!

Sorry I haven't been active, the farm harvest took over my time, but now that's over I'll get busy.

  • Cheers DL, great to have you back. The stiff upper lip thing makes me smile (hard with a stiff upper lip) It explains my special embouchure.

  • It doesn't matter whether you play African tribal music, spiritual meditational hyms, or smooth jazz---- it is always a wonderful performance.

You play a mean stringer, but my brother is still my favorite guatarist in the world. :) I believe your solos continue to become more complex and you have perfected your tone.

Our children need to listen to your music!

Lets turn off the mindless bullshXX on TV on put on some Mr. Stone.

  • Very flattering namaste, but I have a good face for radio :-) I can actually play some african guitar, it's good fun! Thanks for the kind comment!

  • What piece are you using on Sop these days? Still the NY link on tenor?

  • Hi Mr SOTW! I always found the 7* NY Link a little too bright after my 5* HR, so I just went up to a 7 in a Link HR, much warmer sound. I went the same way on sop and have gone for a 6* HR Link. Sometimes I think they are the most beautiful sounding pieces in the world, but other times I find them stuffy and dull. This is the way with Links I think, but they keep you coming back for more. Never got on with the RPC105 rollover, that might go on ebay soon, way too bright! I use stock ligs

  • I've moved to a Selmer Soloist on tenor. You might like it. It has a lot more body than a link. Anyway, see if you can find one in a more open tip, like the HR link you have, you just might like them.

  • Thanks for the tip, Joe Henderson used a soloist, and I love his tone, I might just root one out.

  • YOu wo't be dissapointed. Mine measures at 8 and I use a La Voz Medium reeds. Great sound!

  • Sorry, not all stock ligs, I use a BG rovner style one on the sop.

  • Hi Sir,

I've been watching and listening to you for some times now and I feel like bringing you my compliments! Well done!

This tune is amazing, have you evere wondered to write sheet music for it and share it?

I do play saxophone as well and may be glad to play it.

    Dave

  • Thanks Dave, very kind words, I cannot write out music, as I don't have the skills. I can barely read it :-) I am working hard on this shortcoming, but I am sorry I cannot do this for you.

  • Honestly, I don't know Dave's music very well. I have just discovered Jeff Coffin with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Wow!!

  • Very well done, Matthew!

  • Are you a closet Koz fan too? :-)

  • is that just reverb or both reverb and delay on the saxes??

  • Just heavy reverb I use logic express on an apple, and it is the platinum reverb that comes with it, as well as some compression. It is important for this style. Smooth jazz players also sometimes use a sprinkling of chorus. I could bring myself to do that :-)

  • nice job dude. its sounds great and some real tasty guitar work!

  • Cheers!! I have played the guitar a lot, lot longer than the sax. But I dont pick it up for months on end now, so it is frustrating when I do (my head remembers but my fingers don't)

  • Ha Ha! I love your sop solo on this one, and your tenor (I can't help being reminded of him) reminds me of Getz's successful atttempts - a couple I think - at Smooth Jazz.

Thanks for a very unusual for you and wonderful post...

  • Thanks dpt, trick on the soprano is to not hang around. I actually had Branford Marsalis's "englishman in new york" type vibe going on, then morphed into a Kenny Gee flurry. Good fun, a bit like shedding on guitar, but is it music???

  • Yes, your sop sounds a lot like Branford's - beautifully done. He is the premier practicioner of that li'l jazz instrument since Benito Soprannino invented it...

BTW, I would never mention Brandon's name in the same msg as KGee or DKozz. Their style is just "musical mast........", while he is a true genius of jazz.

  • Too true, Branford is a genius. It is just that I started off tasteful and ended up, well Gee like. Look up Dave Koz How to Make a Hit here on a youtube, he obviously has a great sense of humour!!

  • OK, I just watched the funniest video I have ever seen on Y'allTube!!! The melon hatz are incredible, and Holly's kazoo playing could qualify for the JazzKidz Hall of Shame!

Seriously, I have a whole new appreciation for Dave Koz (in Da Robe) and his tiny sax, thanks to you, Matthew...

  • I personally like it, It's a change from regular jazz.

  • Very nice job for what it is, but don't take that the wrong way. It's just that I'm not a big fan of smooth jazz either, so I was happy to see that you would stick with mainstream jazz..*chuckle*.

Like you, I have huge respect for Dave Koz as a player. He's probably the only smooth jazz sax player that I can listen to without making my teeth itch, but I can still only take it in small doses.

While the style isn't my cup of tea, you've shown a great deal of versatility here. That's a good thing.

  • cheers cj, it was fun creating something from scratch, and I can see why musicians play this style. Not a big fan either, so I'll go back to my usual for the next one ....

  • Very tasteful, Matt. Like it.

  • Well, I think you did a VERY fine job!!!

I wonder how you manage to play that soprano so nicely. I just had a go at one but it sounded awfully out of tune. Now I know it is me doing it because in the hands of my teacher it sounded fine LOL!

Ok, I am just a VERY beginner on tenor...

    Have a nice weekend!

    Love, Cobi

  • Cheers Cobi! The trick to playing the soprano in tune is to play it very, very fast. No-one notices. :-)
