  • Hah, Matchbox 20 on a Ps2 Linux, you're one crazy motherf***er. Props for installing it, though.

  • if i run an emulator on linux i can run win 7! but how would i duel boot emulator and ps2 operating system?

  • @kieracker You can not replace the RAM in a PS2, it is soldered onto the motherboard, You can not take it out and replace it. =o As for Windows 7 ... If you want to try it go ahead, but I'm trying to tell you that 32mb of actual system memory, is not enough for Win7, let alone to emulate it. I just don't see it doable. Go do the research of how much RAM Win7 requires, then find out how much a PS2 has. Windows 3.11 Could be done, windows 7 not so much.

  • @TailsFurse But enough for Windows XP :D

  • but surely u can replace the ram?

  • PS2 has 64MB of available memory. You can add swap space to increase memory (same like pagefile), and that is 512MB big which will allow you to run some apps that rely on memory. Since EE is PPC based, you can port some apps easily.

  • @xan1242 Nice! PS2's have 32MB of RDRAM and then 4MB of eDRAM ((Playstaion 2 Wiki)) Swap space does give you more room to work with though. I would love to see some programs ported to the PS2, Like usable ones, or even a newer youtube app.

  • @TailsFurse Yeah, I would love to see that too, but well, nobody is working on it lately. :/

I also saw Wine ported to this distro! Some guy who showed off Firefox running in Blackrhino in Wine, and I wonder how the hell he did that.

And someone ported Bochs to PS2 as well, and I actually tried installing Windows 2000, and it took 2 days to copy the files on the PS2 with a USB stick. After that it didn't boot. xD (that's why I recommend making a VM on PC and then run on PS2)

  • @xan1242 Wow man, kudos to you for giving the PS2 time to try. Waiting 2 days for a distro install, you my friend have patience! xD

  • @TailsFurse It was a virtual machine emulating x86 processor, and it was as slow as shit! Windows 98 works, though. I also tried mounting my Dosbox Windows 98 image in the dosbox in this distro and Dosbox crashed

I killed time with my PS1 and PC, and my PC is capable enough of playing PS2 games, so if I ever want to play a PS2 game while my PS2 is busy, I still have emulator. It was worth a shot, to see how long it will install. Also, if I left it on for even longer, it might boot.

  • Holy shit, I have same setup! xD

Except I run it directly off 16GB USB, because I don't have Network Adapter, even though I want one badly.

  • do you have a link to that capture card by any chance?

  • @Alie2 Look in your PM's. =3

  • can i use more that 1 drive on a ps2? with that drive wire from my old pc?

  • are there any other operating systems that will work on it?

  • surely you can replace the ram etc?

and i thought that you could install onto hard drive hmmmmmmmmmm......

i just wanna do somthin amazing

    got any ideas?

  • yo using that online web browser can i download programs and install em? and then install win 7 and have a boot loader for different operating systems?

im 14 and if u say there is a good chance then i will do it and make a totorial on it plz respond asap so that i can get started :)

  • @kieracker Hi there! The web browser can download programs, However it can not download Windows7 because of a few reasons. The PS2's proccessor is only Clocked at 294Mhz, while Windows7 needs... I think, 1000mhz, The PS2 has 32mb of ram, Windows7 needs at least 512mb to run basic. Windows7 also needs, as of now, an x86 -x64 based processor, the PS2 has a MIPS R5900 which is a bit different. Sorry man, it's just not do-able. D=> I heard you can run windows 3.11 in emulation though. =o

  • I would update the kernel.. 3.1 is suppose to be fast.

  • @mattgresh1 I've read somewhere that the PS2's Kernel can not be upgraded higher than 2.4 or so. The tool chain is not available for the PS2's processor. Your right though, would be awesome though.

  • Lol, I love the way you say it almost looks like a real computer, xterm is /bin/bash and no that is not MSDOS. Try some commands like; ls, pwd, who, uname -a, lspci... Linux is more of a real operating system than MSWindows!

  • @TheSnowshell PS2 linux has quite a few limitations, I was kind of comparing it to the functions of a computer of today. And your right linux is more of an operating system, and if my laptop there would run linux right, I would totally do it, linux just isn't friendly on it. When I did this video I was just learning about linux so I may sound like a newbie about it. I know Bash isn't MSDOS, I was just trying to compare it to windows machines people are used to. Thanks for commenting.

  • do any games work on ps2 linux?

  • @gamezonic I never installed any games onto the PS2 linux os, however a quick look on youtube can show that it is in fact possible to do it.

  • furfag

  • i can also do this on a PS2 Slom or ?

  • @applefreak441 Yes, you can do this on the slim, there is a live CD that you can run on the slim PS2 that will allow it to run Linux, also by @adeba5er . However you still need a way to boot the disk on the PS2.

  • @iEugene1994

    Pervert?

Sorry I am diverse and use more than one type of OS and that it bothers you, but the capture card doesn't work with Linux. I didn't want to record it using the TV or projector, since they both use CRT technology. Which if you watch a majority of other video's with PS2 recordings, CRT's flicker badly on the camera recording. Doing it this way doesn't show the flicker. Just helping the viewers see better, thats all.

  • This is a distro I built based on the original BlackRhino release. I spent alot of time tweaking and compiling various applications. Mega Man (kernelloader) did all of the heavy lifting, run time and kernel work, even built a LiveDVD. More info is available on the forums - psx-scene[dot]com -- forums -- ps2-homebrew-dev-emu-scene

The last release of my distro was March 2010 at the 4shared site mentioned in the forums.

  • @adeba5er Even though you are not working on this project anymore, I would like to thank you for the work, time and effort you and Mega Man put into this distro, this was by far one of my favorite projects for the PS2.

  • Can anyone paste cros and cons on having Linux on PS2? I`m thinking about that, but I have to know everything about effects, you know, I`m careful

  • what was the program's name ? i didnt understand ! the smiler??

  • they are not updating it now :/ if finished like 2008 :P

  • have you tried youtube yet and if you have, does it play videos without lagging?

  • @bulletnose53 I have not been able to get YouTube Video's to play as of yet, as of this video though I have not really been tinkering with this on the PS2, but in the way the linux was set up at the time, the PS2 was not connecting to the internet through the router, because it was looking to be a specific IP, but our router doenst allow that, so youtube vid's did not work at the time either.

  • how did u change da name where it usually says free mc boot

  • @xekay619x To do this you have to turn the PS2 on (of course xD) go down to the bottom where it says "Free McBoot Configurator" and press X. Wait for it to load and press X to make X your enter button. Go down to "Configure OSDSYS options", then press X. Go down to "Configue Scrolling Options" then press X. Then go down to "Top Delimiter" and "Bottom Delimiter". These two lines allow you to change your titles at the top and bottom of your screen, Hope this helps man.

  • awesome, I previously modded my fat ps2 to do the free mcboot mod, going to try this eventually

  • Is this the only linux install on the ps2? Can you install damn small linux or another version of it. And yeah man setting ps2s as low cost PCs to simply surf the web would be awesome. It would be nice to surf with my ps2

  • @lulustu This is, to my knowledge, one of the only modified versions of linux made for the PS2. Its based off of BlackRhino linux if I am correct, and the creator added a few apps that run on the PS2's processor. And I do not think that Damn Small Linux will work on the ps2 because that distro doesn't know how to run on the playstation hardware. Sorry about that. I stopped working on this a while ago, but maybe I'll get back to it when I get some time to tinker with it.

  • interesting !

  • with Ps2 Linux can you play movies from the web ,,,or may need download programs ???

will be awesome if the Ps2 'd be able to play movies from the web!!

  • @viktor19997 Actually yes you can, or at least there is a built in program to handle youtube video's on this Distro, however this linux Distro was setup using the creators static IP address's, And I cannot figure out how to set it to dynamic IP, as my network requires, also I do not know the IP's that he used so I cannot setup my network to this. I'm working on figuring this out though, and I'm sure it would play online video If and when I am able to figure it out.

  • That keyboard is the same as the one on my computer!

  • @emilner5 Top notch keyboard, lasts forever, and you can take it and lay it in your lap, kick back and relax in your chair because the mouse is built in! =D

  • It's great to see that people are still out there doing this work. The PS2 is still a viable machine, even if it is now over 10 years old.

  • @tak178 It is all done without needing the CD drive, all done through memory card, usb stick, and hard drive, so PS2's that just have broken CD drives could be setup like this, then sent over to people who need them but dont have money for them, libraries that could use them in needy places, kinda reviving old hardware. I think with some well thought out programing to this, this could become very useful around the world, even though Sony tried this already?

  • @TailsFurse Absolutely. There are people all over the world who use machines with less capabilities than what the PS2 has to offer (some are still using Windows 98!!!).
