Those are the most carefree years ever. As soon as you get into middle-school and beyond, life stops being so carefree and starts become a neverending competition... competition over grades, jobs, social status, women, etc. etc. etc.

I do think that's around the age that priorities shift, and from there on out, you lose friends over social cliques, and the carefree nights of watching Alex Mack and playing Super Mario World begin to subside, to be replaced more with competition and acting fake in order to be cool and get laid.
