The tail is used to circle and confuse prey you idiots. Exactly like a Sailfishes large dorsal fin. The thresher does this with schools of baitfish. Ive seen it first hand. They circle sometimes in pairs to get fish close toether then jet through and eat weak fish.
I would think their tales were not for stunning fish but instead would be used in an undulating motion to create and extreme amount of propulsion in a short duration of time. after all the skinnier the tail fin the faster the shark can go and the length allows for quick acceleration. The thresher probably does rapid hunting like a mako shark.
amazing video, was there in aug 2007 and saw this creature too passing right in front of us. thrilling unforgettable experience at only 20 meters deep.
Instead of going all this way, he could have come to my house in Malibu and checked out the Thresher Sharks... a little far for him. There were 2 Threshers yesterday at Zuma Beach.... i think i was closer to the sharks then him!! ha

dahhhhh im an over excited yank dahhhhhh im looking for sharks today dahhhhh sharks live in the water dahhhh i went looking for the oh so rare thresher dahhhh but i found a manta ray dahhhh
Good observations regarding the anchor usage. How about the sitting and resting equipment on the reef, or the shining of the strobes directly into the threshers eyes which obviously spooked it away...
Mr Bird, in case you do read these coments:
You are in the privileged position of showing many people some of the best places and marine life.
You made it through a lot of theory and practice to get where your are - don't forget the basics and role model!
Shame on you Jonathan Bird. Allowing your boat to weigh anchor at Monad Shoal when they have buoys there to tie to? Yeah right the guide miraculously found the spot. There are plenty of signs - like 5 other boats diving there too. Your boat's anchoring is one of the things destroying the habitat. Dive responsibly so we can save some of these sights for future divers!!!!
yeah!!! Philippines idol!!! hehehe! the "BANGKA" boat. look how innovative filipinos are! despite being in a 3rd world country!! hehe! full of corrupt politicians! but still they can carry on! how much more if those guys are good! we could go far from being a 3rd world country to a 1st class one! yeah!!!! DEMOLAY!!!
"Scientists think they use their tail like a whip to stun prey"
Ha, fisherman KNOW they use it to stunn prey as a big portion are Tail Hooked not mouth hooked. We find them when they are "tailing." They ball up baitfish and then whip the fish around stunning them before they are eaten. It's a beautiful site to see a feeding Thresher doing underwater summersaults while whipping and easting.
I was here 4 weeks ago, didn't se any sharks, and that was to bad, but we saw 11 devil reys (not as big as tha manta ray) at once! that was really beutifull! :D But I guss I'll have to go back there to see the threser to! :)
I did the same way back in 2004, we saw nothing in the morning, i really wanted to go back in the afternoon, and convinced them....medium current, but out of the blue came the Thresher and then came the Manta unbelievable, they where as close to me as this video and that was with a normal tank.
I'll bet money this guy is a virgin
