As the end of the broadcast comes they show Rob Houghtlin kicking the winning FG and Brent says " he'll remember this for the rest of his life and thats what college football is all about". Say what you want about the old broadcaster but he was and still is a class act.

My dad and his father was also at this game. I was 9 at the time, ever since than my dad and i have gone to at least one game at kinnick each year. Oct 10th, 2009 my dad and i went to the night Mich game. Just about 25 yrs to the date he went with his dad.
As I recall, Iowa got screwed out of a touchdown in this game by a bad call.
Both teams were 5-0 at the time and Michigan's defense had only given up one touchdown so far all season. The quarterbacks were Chuck Long and Jim Harbaugh.
However, I believe the game b/t Iowa & Michigan State was even better than this one that year. Mich St had Bobby McAllister @ QB that year and Alonso White at RB. They also had Andre Rison @ WR! Remember that?! Iowa beat them too. I believe Ohio State ruined the Hawkeyes chances at a National Championship that year.
This was one of the greatest games the NCAA has ever had. I had this on video tape. It was b/f cable so the quality was not the greatest. The Wolverines with that Angel 5 Defensive scheme was tough all year long but, Chuck Long, Ronnie & Kevin Harmon had other plans that day. It was a beauty!

It was returned to grass before 1990. Michigan played a game on the grass either in '88 or 89, Bo was still coach and Wolverine Historian has the highlights up.
What I cannot understand is why Iowa went back to turf the past year (2009), I thought their field always looked fine and never got worn down.

How can we all stick together in the Big 10, when only 1 team wins a bowl game in 2008. I think as Iowa fans, we all know who that "only" team was. Sitting in the student section for this game, I kept my eyes closed during Houghtlin's field goal because I was too scared to watch. When the crowd erupted, I knew we were winners. About 5 minutes later, I decided to join the 10,000 (or so) other idiots who had swarmed the field near the north end zone. Gosh, does this bring back memories. This, plus the crowd getting on Bo during the second quarter when he got about 15 yards onto the field and no flag was thrown on him.
yes Iowa has won a NAT'L Championship, all the way back in 1958. They tied Air Force, 13-13, however, they still won it anyway. Because they had the better record.
Some sources (most, actually) show that Iowa has won a national championship. It was dated 1958, when they won the Rose Bowl over California. Most polls had Iowa at 2nd behind an LSU team with a perfect record (Iowa was 8-1-1). Many major sources don't have it listed. I think it was the Football Writers Association that picked Iowa that year. In my opinion, although it was 30 years before I was born, LSU probably deserved it more since they were perfect.
After seeing Iowa pull off the big win against Penn State this past Saturday, and notice I did not say "upset" it reminded me so much of this historical game. Hayden is a legend!

I remember watching this game at Kinnick when I was 5 years old - wearing my Chuck Long jersey! One of the most incredible experiences of my youth. Hawkeye fans are some of the best in the nation. We stick with our team no matter what the season.

How can we all stick together in the Big 10, when only 1 team wins a bowl game in 2008. I think as Iowa fans, we all know who that "only" team was. You have to beat other conferences to gain respect around the country, and consistently, Iowa is the only team, in bowl games, who can prove that. Ask South Carolina, LSU, and Florida, all teams Iowa has beaten in the last 7 years.

Brady didnt emerge as a QB til he got to the NFL.. nobody credits michigan for his success.. the best he ever got was All-Big Ten (honorable mention)playing for Michigan. Sitting in the student section for this game, I kept my eyes closed during Houghtlin's field goal because I was too scared to watch. When the crowd erupted, I knew we were winners. About 5 minutes later, I decided to join the 10,000 (or so) other idiots who had swarmed the field near the north end zone. Gosh, does this bring back memories. This, plus the crowd getting on Bo during the second quarter when he got about 15 yards onto the field and no flag was thrown on him.

Some sources (most, actually) show that Iowa has won a national championship. It was dated 1958, when they won the Rose Bowl over California. Most polls had Iowa at 2nd behind an LSU team with a perfect record (Iowa was 8-1-1). Many major sources don't have it listed. I think it was the Football Writers Association that picked Iowa that year. In my opinion, although it was 30 years before I was born, LSU probably deserved it more since they were perfect.

Technically, Iowa has 5 national championships. But that's if you count every single poll, in which case every team has many more championships.

After seeing Iowa pull off the big win against Penn State this past Saturday, and notice I did not say "upset" it reminded me so much of this historical game. Hayden is a legend!

I miss Hayden. He made you proud to be a Hawk fan. He loved Iowa and adopted it in his own heart. I remember exactly where I was when this happened, sitting at home watching on TV. Too bad we didn't win the Rose Bowl, but this was still one of the greatest moments in Hawkeye Football. God bless Hayden!
