how rare it is to get this kind of insight into a work in progress from an artist who clearly has viewed her talent and life as a work in progress and never stopped working at it. What an incredible talent and what a blessing to be a contemporary age-wise and watch her evolve. Pure joy.
@soyunsauce This is one of the most beautiful and honest performances I've ever seen...definately one of my favourite songs...even though she does look a little like CARRIE in those days. She is simply the definition of beautiful for sure.
Superb Share... Blue for me remains one of the finest 5 albums of all time, regardless of Genre... pure artistry and inspiration. Lovely to hear this Jewel in one of the stages of its evolution... a flower in the growing!
Blew me away, it did. It is so different from the album version, and so raw and vulnernable. Which lover was she singing to this time? I think a lot of her fragility at the time she was making "Blue" had somehting to do with her daughter - to me, "Little Green" is about as poignant a song as you can get. But then, I didn't even know about that child until I read "Girls Like Us".
This clip is very moving. I took it as introspective - saying it to herself when she said "You're not real, do you think you're fooling me? With these false pretentions of phony comraderie." - She isn't the type to attack others. She is very critical of herself and her own sincerity and authenticity. I take it as a rebuke to herself, that she saw she was acting fake, asked herself why, and discovered her greed and jealousy.
My favorite artist..what a blast to hear this song in such a different form from the recorded example. I have some tapes of her playing live in clubs in New York in the 60s, a lot of different stuff there too. Amazing. Thanks for posting this.
Oh my gosh... it's like a completely different song. So amazing to hear one of Joni's most famous compositions in its early stages. You can really get a sense of what she was feeling as she wrote it, before the lyrics were really scrutinized and refined. Thank you for this!!!
@Can04boi That seems right to me. :) It's just so interesting because on the album it's like an ode to love, whereas here it's detailing a breakup. Just simple changes, from "All I really, really want our love to do" to "all I WANTED love to do"... small, but enough to break your heart. Joni said she felt very vulnerable when she was writing the songs for the Blue album, and you can definitely get a sense of that here.
That video is priceless, but pleeease get rid of that thing on the screen.

This was an incredible experience -- to hear the song in its early stages. Very, very nice, Joni.

Wow.
It took me until 2011 to learn there was another version of this song.
I wonder how many other versions of her songs exist?
If she's anything like Springsteen ..... a lot.

Wow
Thanks so much for this.
The purity and truth in these lyrics, although a younger version, almost transcend those of the album version. I wonder what made her change them?

Most likely Graham Nash, considering the timing.

Here, she is like an angel who fell from the sky and began to sing in front of the crowd in that far october 9 th, 1970...
Her voice sounds perfect and pure.
Only she and her dulcimer. Nothing more. Nothing but true art...

This is so precious! Thanks for sharing!
"All I really really wanted love to do was to bring out the best in me and in you too" (this version)
"All I really really want our love to do is to bring out the best in me and in you too" (studio version)
The change from past to present is so significant. o.0
I wonder which one was more Joni at the time. My bet is this one.
