  • Everyone, try the brand new Bon Iver and The Chieftains version! Brilliant!

  • A beautiful version of this song, though I wish they would use the words "Burglars Wine" --instead of Burgundy, which was a drugged wine used for theiving purposes! Hence she fell fast asleep.I have all of his solo albums. Thanks for posting.

  • Nice song

  • Where's the name of Simon? But O.K., both of them always make me relax by their musics

  • MURDER set to gentle relaxing music.

  • Such a calming sweet song... and then I started listening to the lyrics..

  • I've loved this tune since the movie RAISING ARIZONA. That is the first time that I heard it, when the tune is being sung to little Nathan as a lullaby.

  • For being a song about stabbing your love to death with a knife then dumping their body in a river, this song is calming.

  • Down in the willow garden Where me and my love did meet, As we set there a courtin', My love fell off to sleep. I had a bottle of burgundy wine, My love she did not know. And so I poisoned that dear little girl On the banks below. I drew a saber through her, It was a bloody knife, I threw her in the river, Which was a dreadful sight.
  • My father often had told me That money would set me free If I would murder that dear little girl Whose name was Rose Connelly. My father sits at his cabin door, Wiping his tear dimmed eyes, For his only son soon shall walk To yonder scaffold high. My race is run beneath the sun, The scaffold now waits for me, For I did murder that dear little girl Whose name was Rose Connelly.
  • Sweet murder song....

  • When I was eight my dad died an he use to sing this to me when I went to bed.

He will always be a memory and in my heart.

  • Yeats wrote the poem Saileys garden almost word for word in 1898.

  • Hardly written by Charles Monroe. This is an old murder ballad common in the early 19th cent. Possibly of Irish origins.

  • I found a copy of this song (vinyl 45) with Art on the cover...very rare. It's a mini EP with this song, If You Go Away (Terry Jacks), If you love me (Olivia Newton-John and Billy, Don't be a Hero (Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods)....what would that be worth!?

  • tank...love this song much..mh. I was born 1958 wow....h

  • Simply the only fully instrumented and 'expanded' version of this tender song I have ever heard that does it utmost justice. Bravo, Art. Well done all you who participated to form this magical recording.

  • Surprised to see Jerry playing this song..... but......COOL!

  • Scary! I never heard this before. My son is a singer/fiddler/bandleader in western NC, and he might give it a whirl. He did revive "Tom Dooley" once, but doesn't sing it very often. Such angry songs, sung so casually, as if by sociopaths.Tom Waits is about as far as I want to go in this direction.

  • #Mlike #SM24hrs Art Garfunkel Down In The Willow Garden

  • JERRRRYYYYY!!!!!!!!

  • This song inspired Nick Cave's Where the Wild Roses grow Feat. Kylie Minogue. If you like this, try that one too.

Thanks for this I love it.

  • No One, and I mean NO ONE, can sing this song like Art! I can listen to this along with his song 'Mary Was An Only Child" over and over again! Not only is Art's voice awesome, but the instrumental accompaniment on these are great! I recommend that if you can, go get the "Angel Clare" cd which contains these two songs as well as some other good ones, such as "Barbara Allen" and "Woyaya". I discovered this album (on cassette) in the early 90's in the dollar bin. So glad I bought it!

  • thanks for posting this song..

  • Beautiful !! [I also love the Everly Brothers gorgeous version.]

  • Jerry Garcia plays guitar on this

  • thanks

  • A state of art for many years.

  • raising arizona

  • This is awful. Don and Phil made the ultimate version.

  • @noahwayne

Some pretty notable instrumentation though, you have to admit.

  • That song is so weird, haunting my brain. Who was Rose Conelly? On the search of Rose Conelly, I found my answers. If you are interested too, just type 'Appalachian Lifestyles: In Search of Rose Conelly' on google's search and you'll get the right link.

  • What a song! When I first heard it, it was 1973, I found it so amazing, loved it immediatly, but as a french boy, did'nt catch a word. LOL! 2 years later, I was able to understand the' full horror' of the theme, but still loved the melody, sounds like an irish ballad

  • I had to order this album from Amazon right away after I listened to bits of it. Art's voice was so passionate and skillful to express such a melancholy tune.

  • O_O I loved this song in Raising Arizona, but... I never actually knew what the lyrics were... LOL! I love this song though. It's sort of eerie.

  • So True.

  • What a beautiful arrangement brought to life by some of the top sessions artists of that time. The song has Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen melodies interwoven throughout this wonderful song. Yes the lyrics are dark, but Art was at the pinnacle of his singing career. One of the best ballads he ever did as a solo artist. Thank you for posting this song.

  • Gald you Love It As Much As i do.

  • Thank you so much for posting this song, I been searching this song for so long.

  • You're Welcome.

  • I don't know about "awful," but it is a creepy version of the song. Maybe he should have gone a different route.

  • Got to be the creepiest folk song ever. I mean, murder ballads are a dime a dozen, like "Tom Dooley," but this one goes deeper.

  • So true.

  • thank you for sahring. I have been searching for this song for a long time. I first heard this song when I was studying medicine in 1984.

  • You're Very Welcome.

  • @THEREALlittlejo

If you love this song listen to the version by Dan Tyminski

  • @THEREALlittlejo so sorry, my father had a huge classic album collection and he was robbed when he was younger. They took everything. When I saw your post I thought about how sad he still is about it. It's been 30 years.
