He is growing up, out of his fantasies. The tree never really moved, only in his imagination. When he started playing with the girl and developing feelings for her, it was just another step to growing up, so he doesn't need the tree anymore, and he's made a friend.

Very good effort! A very subtle and intelligent coming of age theme handled with great sensitivity and very cleverly animated. I enjoyed it very much. I like the shifts between the boy's imagined play world and the way he chooses reality.
