Your example with the apple in Jerusalem, however, would seem to suggest that what makes tzedakah important is the loss incurred by the donor, rather than the gain experienced by the recipient. This makes it somehow sacrificial, which is not a model that appeals to me personally. Otherwise, your presentation of Heschel's quote (to build one's life like a work of art) was beautifully done.
