logically 30% of all deaths caused by smoking related diseases is false, however the text never mentioned how many deaths are due to smoking. yes it states that 30% of cancer deaths. however we know that smoking can cause deaths do to other diseases not only the cancer. so according to the text we can prove or disprove the statement. the answer should be not given otherwise IELTS is so confusing....
What if all deaths in the USA, caused by accidents is 20%, diseases is 70%, and old age is 10%, and 42.86 % of deaths caused by diseases is deaths caused by smoking related diseases meaning that 30% of all deaths caused by smoking related diseases (42.86%*70%) . So there is a chance that the statement " 30% of all deaths are caused by smoking related diseases" is true. So there is nothing in the text to prove the statement false. 30% of all deaths from cancer are caused by smoking does not mean
i thought the smoking one was True bec the question says smoking related diseases and cancer is a smoking related disease. i think it should be true.??
after spending a lot of time and understand and analysing i can tell yes/no/not given..but do i have that much time ..NO!!!! thereby i cant get good result ,,i hate this reading thing
view point questions such as true/false/not given needs not just english language but also logic.Candidate must analyse the question very carefully word by word..not as sentence wise.
Cancer is a disease(singular) So there are 2 contradiction in this question.
TIP:
not given is only when the statement doesn't agree TRUE/YES or FALSE/NO.
To judge a statement as Not given, that question must be failed to comply with the rules of TRUE AND FALSE.Not given is a final resort that one can end up when it is difficult to judge because no adequate information available.A perspective candidate must use DEDUCTIVE LOGIC.
Most native speakers can't even judge advanced IELTS Y/N/NG type.
@shobyms :oops when I read it again found mistake..sorry..Answer still is FALSE but reason is death because of cancer versus death because of smoking related diseases.Since both aren't the same and one contradicts the other.Nowhere in the text it mentions that cancer is a smoke related disease. This is primary reason and the next one is DISEASES VS DISEASE as i said before..hope it is clear now..
no no.. it is a FALSE. This inexplicable you_tube clip doesn't turn this answer into NOT GIVEN ,why? The text says: all the deaths from cancer ;it means "all cancer deaths" .This is a contradiction because the question says " 30% of deaths in USA";t his means; 30% out of all deaths in USA.However, you may ask the word "ALL" isn't in the question but take a look at it carefully.(30+70=100% death).
This answer is a pure contradiction and 1 more hidden contradiction---> "DISEASES" (plural).
oo boy i though the 1st ques , ans was YES... why these all ass holes who make ilets reading test confuse us?? i wann shoot thm... thats y i alwyz fail :(((((((((((( !!!!!!!!!
ohhhhhhhhhhhh my 2nd ques, answer also worrng, i sai NO n here is Not given
i wanna blast them,, y thy use 2 make us confuse???

this screen cast was very informative. I was actually thinking that the first question would have the answer not given not so much because of one kind of death or the other but because the text states "it is believe" there is actually nothing stated :)
Anyways I really enjoyed getting a look into the world of IELTS because I care about how they think so I can pass my test.
Would the first response be "Not Given" if the question were changed to a "True/False/Not Given" one instead of "Yes/No/Not Given"? We simply cannot tell if 30% of all deaths in the US are caused by smoking from that text (since an additional assumption of "30% of all deaths not related to cancer are caused by smoking" will prove the statement to be true). Only that since the question is now asking for "writer's view", we can be quite sure that the writer does not intend to mean this.
In this argument, I have made an assumption that "Y/N/NG" type questions are related to "writer's view", while "T/F/NG" questions are related to the overall factual accuracy of the statement based on the passage instead of assuming ourselves to be the writer.
@david0489 This is a very difficult question. In the world of IELTS, it is felt that "30% of cancer deaths" is indirect evidence to prove the staement incorrect (the statement - "30% of all deaths are caused by smoking). The answer would be "No" or "False" in both cases becuase information in the text contradicts the staement. The contradiction is with "all deaths" v "cancer deaths".
@MyIELTS ..I agree with David0489 that the ans should be not given if its asked for true/false/N.G because the text tells only about deaths from cancer and does not clearly say anything about all deaths, then how can we say it contradicts with statement.. how can we say that whether 30% of all deaths are caused from smoking or not..the writer here does not give any clue about this. Hence its impossible to say either it is right or wrong.so the ans should be NOT GIVEN..

IELTS readinggggggg! i believe that stuff available over internet is the only thing which is confusing ielts students all over the world, i have download some reading material from a website, and it was really hard, i stopped myself in the passage 2 ! damn.. is it really that hard which comes in examination? anyways i need help/assistance in reading section lil_kitten_zen (@) yahoo (.) com
@zain4444 Probably the best way to practice is to try some sample reading questions. Yes, they are difficult, but after some practice, you begin to understand how to handle the question type. You can try some sample questions at our website - MyIELT

In case of Yes/No/Not given the ans could be no because the writer doesn't mean to say what the statement says. ..

@david0489 Exactly. The test makers need to get their
IQ tested! This is perfect evidence that you need to be dumber
than a certain level in order to get a full score in IELTS.
I almost hate myself for having to do this stupid test!
