I wish this video was captioned, so that I as a deaf person could understand all of the lyrics...while the sign language is a nice gesture, it doesn't continue throughout the entire song, so I missed a lot of what's being sung.
It's a nice gesture, but without captions, its message is lost to those of us who are deaf or hard of hearing ... in spite of the fact that our language - American Sign Language - is included in the video.

this was so a surreal experience for me , when the song started i instantly cry , the text , the video made me think of what pray can do .... this hit home for me THANK YOU FOR THIS SONG
When someone sent this to me, I think I played it over and over. I enjoyed watching the video and felt so at peace listening to the music and really listening the the words. When the child speaks, brings tears to my eyes. The whole message is so powerful!
I am not a signer or a Deaf person and the sound had disappeared on my PC when I looked at the video, so all I got was some mouth and hand movements, so I can understand Deaf people's annoyance here.
I am not trying to be hateful...All I am asking is that people try to see it from my perspective.
(tears in eyes)...I just want the same equal access to enjoy its message as everyone else has. Is that a hateful thing? Is that too much to ask for? The video does incorporate my language of ASL, but it's not enough for me to understand it. It does leave me a puzzled and hurt as to why the signing couldn't be throughout the entire video, or at least captions included.
My suggestion towards more cultural relativity, is for the hearing viewers, as well as the musicians themselves, to turn the sound off and then imagine for a moment how difficult it would be to connect with the message of the video.
The spirit of the message is lovely, for those who are able to receive it with their ears. For those who receive it with their eyes, it is indecipherable.
From the perspective of the hearing world, yes, the video is beautiful. It saddens me that my Deaf friends and family are not able to also receive its beautiful message.
In omitting closed captioning or even a transcription, the entire message is lost. The parts that are signed, when viewed by a Deaf person, are completely out of context and therefore disjointed. They are poetic interpretations that don't truly offer the complete message.
FYI My comments were deleted. All I said is that we have plenty of videos with sign language, and if you want to include sign language, it is only respectful to include captions or a transcript.
And I will be coming by every once in a while to repeat my statement, which is perfectly valid, legitimate, and does not violate YouTube rules in any way.
American Sign Language is NOT art... it is a language. It is the language of the Deaf Community. It is the way by which I and other members of the Deaf Community communicate - not only with each other, but with the world at large via interpreters.
An article about this very video has been posted to a blog on the internet...just Google "The Sign and the Music" and see what others have to say.
A suggestion would be to take this lovely video, collaborate with a Deaf artist, and have the Deaf performance artist interpret the message/poetry/song.
It never fails... someone puts a piece of art out there and some narrow-minded special interest group with a political agenda tries to exploit it. Hey, oshginva... if the singer isn't directly descended from the Angle tribe, does that mean he shouldn't use English?
miniqyg, Would you not perhaps feel for a moment hurt, that people will learn your language when it suits them, as in putting bits and pieces in a video, but will not learn it to be fluent enough to reach out to communicate a loving message of acceptance to you directly?

Instead of appreciating that Jeanne has, bringing attention to the fact that signing is something to consider, all you say is how it isn't good enough. Take your hate elsewhere. As a Deaf person, I am surprised and disappointed that the video does not include captioning, even though there is sign language in it. And by the way, as a person who teaches in an Interpreter Training Program, the signing in this video is not that great.
Sure, it's a beautiful video... for HEARING people. We Deaf people just feel cheated - someone took our language, made a music video with it, and didn't bother to think about our needs in the process.
I believe your needs were thought about in the process of making this beautiful video. Your language was not taken and used to make this video. your Sign language was included and merged as All is One with the Spoken language.If the interpretation was not to your standards can you feel the gift of Love and the Beauty through the attempt itself? What a beautiful thought. I know that it works however. In 2001 my daughter died a victim of murder in a domestic violence case. I could have let hate control my life but instead chose to pray for the perpetrator, and to let God heal my wounds. It worked. God heals our lives, and people who hate do so because someone has demonstrated to them hate, violence begets violence. Pray for man kind that we learn to simply love.

Wow...this is an amazing video. I really enjoy the message...it brought tears to my eyes when the little girl started praying. We really need more of these kinds of messages. I think the internet is helping spread the word of peace more and more.

I wish this video was captioned, so that I as a deaf person could understand all of the lyrics...while the sign language is a nice gesture, it doesn't continue throughout the entire song, so I missed a lot of what's being sung.
It's a nice gesture, but without captions, its message is lost to those of us who are deaf or hard of hearing ... in spite of the fact that our language - American Sign Language - is included in the video.

When someone sent this to me, I think I played it over and over. I enjoyed watching the video and felt so at peace listening to the music and really listening the the words. When the child speaks, brings tears to my eyes. The whole message is so powerful!

I am not a signer or a Deaf person and the sound had disappeared on my PC when I looked at the video, so all I got was some mouth and hand movements, so I can understand Deaf people's annoyance here.

I am not trying to be hateful...All I am asking is that people try to see it from my perspective.
(tears in eyes)...I just want the same equal access to enjoy its message as everyone else has. Is that a hateful thing? Is that too much to ask for? The video does incorporate my language of ASL, but it's not enough for me to understand it. It does leave me a puzzled and hurt as to why the signing couldn't be throughout the entire video, or at least captions included.

My suggestion towards more cultural relativity, is for the hearing viewers, as well as the musicians themselves, to turn the sound off and then imagine for a moment how difficult it would be to connect with the message of the video.
The spirit of the message is lovely, for those who are able to receive it with their ears. For those who receive it with their eyes, it is indecipherable.

From the perspective of the hearing world, yes, the video is beautiful. It saddens me that my Deaf friends and family are not able to also receive its beautiful message.
In omitting closed captioning or even a transcription, the entire message is lost. The parts that are signed, when viewed by a Deaf person, are completely out of context and therefore disjointed. They are poetic interpretations that don't truly offer the complete message.

American Sign Language is NOT art... it is a language. It is the language of the Deaf Community. It is the way by which I and other members of the Deaf Community communicate - not only with each other, but with the world at large via interpreters.
An article about this very video has been posted to a blog on the internet...just Google "The Sign and the Music" and see what others have to say.

If all you're looking for is the negative, that's all you'll see. Most videos don't even attempt to offer sign. Instead of appreciating that Jeanne has, bringing attention to the fact that signing is something to consider, all you say is how it isn't good enough. Take your hate elsewhere. We are praying for YOU!

As a Deaf person, I am surprised and disappointed that the video does not include captioning, even though there is sign language in it. And by the way, as a person who teaches in an Interpreter Training Program, the signing in this video is not that great.
Sure, it's a beautiful video... for HEARING people. We Deaf people just feel cheated - someone took our language, made a music video with it, and didn't bother to think about our needs in the process.
Sorry, but I'm not impressed.

I believe your needs were thought about in the process of making this beautiful video. Your language was not taken and used to make this video. your Sign language was included and merged as All is One with the Spoken language.If the interpretation was not to your standards can you feel the gift of Love and the Beauty through the attempt itself? I am so touched by this video. I too have sent it around the world to friends, who will send it around the world to their friends. The song, the vulnerability, the signing, the young girl , all perfect. An inspiration. And reminder to myself too, because I still judge and condemn at times...gratefully, less and less and less now. Your song hastens that process.

What a beautiful thought. I know that it works however. In 2001 my daughter died a victim of murder in a domestic violence case. I could have let hate control my life but instead chose to pray for the perpetrator, and to let God heal my wounds. It worked. God heals our lives, and people who hate do so because someone has demonstrated to them hate, violence begets violence. Pray for man kind that we learn to simply love.
