  • Anna has good singing skills, but sucks in acting. Sorry.

  • Shs is no Lucia. Where are the trills? Quite the train wreck. And she really just does not get Bel Canto. Better to hear her in Traviata, Boheme or Manon. There she can be brilliant. Why does she settle for 2nd best?

  • Just don't like her here, her voice is not for Lucia, her timbre is simple not for this, it's to heavy. She should stick to her fach. I don't say that this performance is bad, only that this role it's not for her, not at all. (don't get me wrong I'm huge fan of her work)

  • @8Goldie It's not her timbre. Callas had a much heavier timbre but was able to do everything requiered for the role - coloratura, trills, breath control. Netrebko has no idea what any of that is.

  • @operamusicfan You're right, but Callas is Callas,no one will ever be good like her,she was the best painter if I may say, that's way she could sang everything, she is my role model!I like how Netrebko works, she is eager to work for art,but i hate when she sings for money. Did you see her Donna Anna at La Scala?I was so disappointed! No phrases, bad breath and the was forcing the jaw so she could sound more dramatic. If i weren't musician i would have thought that she was singing Puccini or Verdi.

  • netrebko should be turandot.... her voice is just not for donizetti or bellini... puccini is for her

  • She looks and acts like a drunk with a shocking headache and blurred vision. Lucia didn't even get to the party to have a drink because she was too busy hacking her new husband to death. Sack the director!

  • What a train wreck! When unable to sing what is in the score: role around on the floor like the slut you are wallowing in the pigsty's mud.

  • @NEBESHIKU Spot on! This is such an embarrassing production.

  • Lucia is just not for her... Everyone now think they could be Callas...

  • Why does she sing with her back to the audience? Oh, right, she sings to the microphones...

  • I love Anna! But this isn't her best performance.

  • If you focus on what this singer isn't bringing, you miss what she is bringing. And you lose. Not usually a huge Netrebko fan, but she's delivering a wonderful performance here.

  • I understand that she has worked hard to pay her studies..and she's got a nice voice, but come on: have you ever listen to Callas? This piece of music should be extremely dramatic and tense (and yet it is coloratura) but it's a mad scene, not a ball. Lucia has just killed a man and she has got completely crazy. Listen to the version of Callas with Karajan, compare and contrast....and weep...

  • I'm not a fan of Anna Netboko, but I find her interpretation here very interesting....chilling...as if Lucia is going to kill again the way she figits with her veil

  • @lamusicahera I went to one of the simulcasts of this production back in '09 and I can tell you Netrebko absolutely NAILED this role right up there with Callas and Sutherland. Since I've never heard the others listed, I can't speak to that. But I can tell you I left the theatre a VERY happy camper. As far as I'm concerned, Netrebko is schooled just fine for this role. Her quiet hysteria won me over from the first notes she uttered. I'm not saying you're wrong, just giving another viewpoint.

  • She should be singing Mimi, Marguerite, Juliette - she is a lyric soprano NOT a coloratura.

  • @KathrynARyder The shining true. No other comment must be made, what so ever.

  • This sounds so different from the live watching... Obviously it sounds better here.

  • well, I've listened to many interpretations of Spargi d'amore and must say Netrebko definitely is the one I prefer. And this goes for the whole Lucia di Lammermoor

  • Inascoltabile.

  • Very beautiful and Anna Netrebko is so sweet. I love her.

  • beautifully done...she's so great and beautiful♥

  • Sutherland ruined Lucia for me. Everytime I see a Lucia, I always compare it to hers, and I'm always bitterly disapointed! None will ever rival the great Australian Lucia!

  • Such over-acting and under-singing, all in the one performance. Had Lucia once been a gymnast with a passion for floor work?

  • @vocalissimo1 You must really, really dislike my favorite Lucia/Lucie.... the great Natalie Dessay !!

  • i assume that everyone making the negative comments on this page are all also top tier singers at the MET . . . .

  • I don't understand the people who criticize this. I thought is was very good.

  • Shouldn't she be singing more dramatic roles like Verdi? I think her voice is to dark and ,for lack of a better word, heavy for this role.

  • @violinistx100 Pay a little attention to the text. This is about a woman who is delusional and sees visions of ghosts who goes completely mad and murders her newlywed husband. This is supposed to be dark. It is supposed to be very dramatic. After Callas changed the way this role was sung in the 50's, people have expected more from this role than a fanciful, canary-like voice. Netrebko gives us the rare darker voice that still has solid high notes and halfway decent coloratura.

  • A great singer--but NOT a coloratura singer. She should be sticking with Verdi. Go to Ruth Ann Swenson's posts to catch the real deal.

  • What happen to Anna Netrebko is such a pity. Who can imagine that this pathetic Lucia is sung by the same soprano who did the marvellous Adina in the Elisir d'amore a few years before.

  • @Simdaperce - Pathetic Lucia? Are you out of your mind? This Lucia was shown around US on public TV 2 years back as "GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET". I am so sick of unsuccessful envious sopranos filling Anna's pages with shitty comments. Well, it will NOT help you to succeed, LOL.

  • @09avenger Well I'm neither a soprano nor a woman, just an opera lover who LOVE Anna when she is great, but the years 2009-2010 where disastrous for her. But I hope her promising Anna Bolena at Vienna will sign her vocal - and physical - comeback. BTW I was at the MET last week for Rigoletto and I saw a very poor Filianoti as the Duke who could barely be heard in the room. The MET is not always a reference. If Anna had done this at la Scala, my comment would've been shared by all the audience.

  • @Simdaperce - Anna Netrebko is in her prime now. She had a fantastic last 3 years, Her fabulous voice has gotten even stronger and bigger. Her Lucia, Norina, Violetta, Iolanta, Mimi, Bolena were fantastic. You, as an opera lover should enlighten yourself a little bit before writing stupid comments. Read this: "Miss Netrebko is the only vocal artist today of her rank and presence at this precise moment in time to define where the art form of Opera currently exists."

    Comandopera, April 5, 2011.

  • @09avenger Give up a second your American standards. Commandopera discredits itself when putting Netrebko, as brilliant as her last Anna Bolena may have been - and I do believe she made one of the best lirical performances of the year - to the level of Sutherland and even Callas. I think she's regaining her rank as the leading soprano today, but calm down, we're talking about 2009 were she'd lost her top high notes, vocal agility and gorgeous body. Just compare with the same version of Dessay...

  • @Simdaperce I assume that you are talking about the Adina she did with her, now husband, Rolando Villazon. The chemistry was fantastic there. What has happened is not a pity. She has had a baby, and gained a bit more weight than she should, but she's not as fat as some of the distortions of this version on YT make her look. I'm a really big fan of Dessay and tend to like her interpretations, but Netrebko is a beautiful singer and I can well believe that a lot of people might prefer her acting

  • @MrHbc3 Ummm, yes, Ms Netrebko sang Adina, but no, she is NOT married to him! Or if she is, I would imagine that it would come as a great surprise to Erwin Schrott, the father of her young son!

As for the visual distortions, the broadcast was in HD and YouTube can't duplicate the resolution so things look a bit "off" but Ms Netrebko has never returned to her pre-pregnancy weight.

  • It will be funny to hear her as Anna Bolena.

Its a shame that she sung this role at the MET. At this stage Sutherland,Gruberova,Anderson,Devia had sung it.

And the Public shouts Brava- VERGOGNA!

  • Perfect Lucia.

  • The Eb was really pretty! >.>

  • To all the upcoming sopranos out there! This is how not to sing Lucia! If you want to be like Netrebko and make an operatic carrer like hers you have to look like a whore, have a nice tone of voice and get a good PR firm! Today, opera fans (most of them) settle for anything, quality is no longer a must, looks are just enough to get your carrer going and the PR firm will make noise so that people think that you are any good!

  • @NEBESHIKU Pretty harsh. :/ This is a bad role for her, for sure, but she's not that terrible. And she doesn't look whoreish, she's beautiful! That was just mean, honestly.

  • @RaWrZzZz She looks like an expensive call girl. Any way, thanks for sharing your opinion with me as i've done myself but the most important thing is that you didn't feel the need to say anything personal about me and start the typical insult fest. I can't stand Netrebko but if you like her please use your freedom and enjoy her.

  • @NEBESHIKU O.O She really looks like a call girl to you? Well, shit I have big brown eyes and a tiny nose too >.< And how could I insult you personally? Sure, what you said was a little mean in my opinion, but I know nothing about you. That seems rather pointless xD I don't like her much either, but she has a pretty voice, I think. Maybe she should've studied jazz or theatrical singing?

  • @RaWrZzZz a pretty voice is no enough to take on belcanto.

  • @NEBESHIKU Very true....But do all brown eyed dark haired girls look like sluts? LOL

  • @RaWrZzZz I haven't seen you, but Anna does and my comment is just about her.

  • As a darker soprano, I really, really WANT to like Netrebko... but honestly, she bores me to tears. I love her tone - there's no question that her voice is beautiful - but she is frankly a terrible actress. It always seems very put on, never genuine. Which is a shame. Maybe she's better to watch live, I don't know, but I really can't see her appeal.

My only vocal criticism is that her high seems very thin and almost reedy compared to the rest of her voice.

  • Not her role. The end is very bad.

  • this shitty bitch is so bloody dull compared to La Dessay in the same production!!

Such an overrated singer to my opinion.

  • @velazquez2009 please get over yourself. Dessay and Netrebko are completely different singers, and such comparisons are entirely odious. It's one thing to express an opinion of taste and another thing completely to be crude and vile.

  • @velazquez2009 La Dessay???? with her vibrato ruining everything....c'mon... Netrebko isn't greatest but Dessay as well sucks in Lucia...

  • @velazquez2009 Dessay is also overrated. . . . Annick Massis and Diana Damrau are way better in this production

  • @velazquez2009 I also happen to like Dessay, both generally and in Met Lucias, but never in my worst nightmare could I imagine Natalie talking about Netrebko the way you are. They are different for sure, but your remarks are inexcusable.

  • bellissima voce...molto soave...

  • Soul music. Beautiful beyond words!

  • VISITRUSSIA pls send also the link of her audio of her singing the Queen of the Night Aria pls. thanks in advance

  • Terrible!

  • I LOVE THIS LUCIA! Anna sounds fabulous. Her voice is like that flute in the orchestra - she is amazing soprano!

  • Netrebko has a beautigully rounded instrument....however I wish she would choose roles that catered better to her voice

  • her lucia is cool. i ♥ it.

  • Anna sang the queen of the night????????????? is this a joke?

  • @Kivimusic yeah long time ago.

  • i like her squeaky e-flat!

  • She is not a coloratura, but she did it very well.

  • @Kivimusic She used to be Colaratura when she was younger... she did The Queen of the night very well... look for her older records.

  • @VISITRUSSIA do you have a recording of her queen of the night? I can't find it on youtube...

  • @Kivimusic I only have audio... she sang The Queen of the night it 1994 in Riga. I will send you a link to download it.

  • @VISITRUSSIA can you send me the link as well, please?

  • @VISITRUSSIA ive read about netrebko singing the queen when she was in her early 20s, but ive never heard any discography of that

  • Allow me a correction of the video info. It is "spargi d'amaro pianto" = I shed bitter tears...

It is a common mistake found even on CDs...

  • The acting is awesome, the best Lucia that I have ever seen in the acting area, but the singing is ok not the best comparing to other great coloraturas like Dessay and Sutherland.

  • lol.

  • Emissione faticosa. Coloratura zero.

There is a huge difference between bel canto, and can belto

  • Once more she shows her mastership in singing and acting. Great production.

  • Great Singing. Smooth clear musical tone colour.

  • She's the best Lucia.

  • :') Beautiful. She makes a great Lucia.

  • Only Netrebko refinement and precision in PAUSES and decay transients could be a theme of lecture.

  • Comment removed

  • Her technical standing is that of the Sutherland and Schwarzkopf, in terms of voice quality combined with dynamic lightness. But HER intellectual standing is that of a COMPOSER: she's the most deep and lucid singer I ever heard. This is, for me the real INVALUABLE merit of this fantastic artist who already did music history

  • I have to say that this is the best I have heard of her! The diction is still a problem but her phrasing is amazingly stylistic!

  • Look AMAZON for Lucias's CD with Anna !

    Bravo!!!!

  • I wish they'd hire her at La Scala to do Lucia.

I long to listen to the chorus of "boo"-s she'll get there, while she's being venerated by all the other opera houses which applaud even such musical misunderstandings as Nathalie Dessay.

  • Pathetikos, I agree with your insight into Dessay's art, I myself felt noxious when I watched her performance. Dssay tries to compensate for her childish patheticly small voice by buffoonish acting, brr . However, Netrebko's Lucia is marvelous - it is on DVD now and is regarded as Great performances at the MET. Her amazing voice and her fabulous acting cannot be even compared to anyone's presently. I suggest you watch Annas DVD of Lucia once more.

  • I'm sorry to say it but in a world where a recording (the MEMORY) of Lina Pagliughi's Lucia exists, I can't accept Netrebko, even if the Met and the publicity tell me that it is a great performance. It may be right that Netrebko is the best presently. But if it is so... so much the worse for the present.

  • Pathetikos , well it is a real pity that you prefer to live in the past. In that case I wish you live another 30 years and then you will be able to see that Anna Netrebko will remain in history among the greatest sopranos. Her greatness will become evident for everyone in time.

  • Sembra tutto tranne che pazza, pessima attrice.

  • Is it me or she screw up at 2:22 ?

  • besides, singing a role is not just singing a note but...we would have aprreciated earing an E flat...

obviously i assume none of you consider that "aaaaahhhahhhahh" as a SUNG note

  • angelo...dessay is better, though i think she's too "leggero" , but....lots of singers are much much better

  • I'm sorry, she has a good voice but she mostly "plays" to be a star... she lacks "artistic weight". Fortunately for her in this years she can so whatever she wants, as competitors are vanishing. But it's just my opinion...

  • I prefer Dessay...You can argue that Anna is vocally better here, to which I agree, but Dessay's amazing acting combined with her reasonable vocals in Lucia(everywhere else she's flawless) trump Anna's vocally sound but bland performance.

  • Hello bimbo

what you have to do with opera?

Creep back in your cave, you blindworm and don't harass decent people with your latino crap.

  • Overrated.....Dessay is better.

  • Not secure high e but still unsatisfactory.

    Needs more improvement.

  • Anna nailed this Mad Scene, even the greats like Fleming and Dessay commended her portrayal and singing of Lucia, she could however improve though on her acting, especially the facial expression. ^_^

  • A good performance by a good soprano, no more. Some coloratura is laboured, a few high notes are flat. Good stage presence but some overacting and acrobatic movement for effect. I saw her at Covent Garden in CAPULETTI E MONTECCHI and she was good, no more. I fail to see what the hype is all about or why the media have given her superstar status. To call her "the greatest soprano ever" is plain Hubris, when History has given us Ponselle, Flagstad, Callas, Nilsson, Sutherland, Caballe, L Price.

  • she's hot, that's it

  • I concur. I still enjoy her, but I don't love her in these roles. Her is better suited to Puccini...maybe even Strauss???

  • Impossibile criticarla.

Grande Anna. Ti aspettiamo in Italia.

Anna. please, sing in Italy. We are waiting for you.

  • student work

  • I prefer Dessay in this

  • Vocally I totally agree.....she's really good. But I've seen her roll around on the floor in several clips in other productions and it seems to be her MO rather than something done for shock value. Here on YouTube, there's a clip of the french version of Lammermoor with her and she has a wardrobe malfunction. Now there's shock value;).

  • Sublime!!!!

  • Anna Netrebko is the BEST!

  • i love anna netrebko, she is so pretty and amazingly talented! however, lucia was not written for a voice like hers. she is a great violetta and would make a great carmen. i just dont know about lucia...

  • The great ana netrebko is back!

  • Netrebko is back, whit her talent and her voice !!! her pregnency has not broken her beautiful talent. i'm going (try to go) to see netrebko in Paris this year. Very Great Program : "l'elisir d'amore" and "la boheme". without forget Dessay in "la Sonnambula" for example. i'm so happy to see these great artist (if i can access to the opera lol)

  • i won't pay to watch her.

  • FlyingElephant20, you do not like Anna's singing but you spend 24/7 to bash her - so what is your problem? You are a disgusting & pathetic basher of a great talent. Shame on you! I hope you get what you deserve - your envous miserable soul and sad life!

  • ZzZzZz

  • me too and i don't want to be part of the poor audience.

  • the part of the video where lucia takes the doctor's hand is one of my fav. acting choices.

  • ......... One sees here the whole offer of operas of all composers and not only Italian opera. In 10 years no more stars come to America, because the opera scene expands from Europe to Asia, China and Korea.

THEREFORE, learn GERMAN if you want to be active professionally musically!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • This is why the American opera-houses are broke (Baltimore, MET 100 million debts) etc.!!!

Renee Fleming rather sings in Germany, the last week in the "ROSENKAVALIER" with Damrau and Koch - magnificent staging! Today opera is called Germany and Austria! Here there are 120 excellent symphony orchestras and in every town an opera or concert hall. Classical music is subsidised by the state and is for every singer and musician a "golden country"......

  • Comment removed

  • She likes when I finger banged her.

  • For all morons' information:

Netrebkos voice is evenly produced, effortless, sharp and clearand is matched with a technique that loves every note precisely and fully in its proper length and dynamic range. Her pianissimos are thrilling, and her rapid passage work almost flawless.

    The Washington Post Philip Kennicott

  • Even without thinking about the technique, this sounds too light for opera. Definitely crossover opera = popera.

  • Thugman, if it is Popera - ok then the world loves Popera!

AMERICA and the whole world idolises ANNA - in spite of your efforts.

You can stop to fight - the classical opera is dead! You have lost. GAME OVER!

  • In America, Netrebko isn't famous. Brittney is. In my country, Mozambique, Netrebko is never known.

  • You have just declass yourself.

I don't know which critic you quote here constantly, however, from opera you have generally no notion !

Your intelligence is only enough to Brittney Spears!

Sing the Pátria Amada and apologise for your behaviour.

  • I'm American. Most people I know who also like opera tend to be more fond of older singers, such as Popp and Deutekom. A lot of people also like Damrau.

btw, just because a majority of americans like britney spears doesn't mean that the opera lovers do!

  • Oh and I forgot Fleming. She's the favorite here.

  • That was my reply to filaredo who insisted Netrebko is the the most famous and the best popera singer.

  • I'm part of the world and I definitely don't idolise Netrebko since she can't sing.

Secondly, you brag about germany having 120 great orchestras and then you say classical opera is dead. Makes very little sense as any of your posts.

Thirdly, opera singers may need to know german to sing SOME roles but you need to learn english becuase you suck.

Last but not least, since your Netrebko intends to sing French roles she may have to learn that language too because she sucks as much as you do.

  • I'm glad that you admit you don't really love opera, and that your real goal is to turn this wonderful art form into a marketing gimmick. What's next, singing Lucia in a bikini. Let opera die, I'll always cherish my recordings of truly great singers.

  • Original thought!

You decide what is "Great" - only you. Or do you trust an expert? Experts are corruptible like critic.

Italians (eradesso) and the Italian press try to discriminate for many years against Anna Netrebko and the East European singers also here with YouTube e.g. Thugman30 alias comey,dks880,ccsabin!

Decisions even who is GREAT before it make Thugman, Leoperam or eradesso .

The good news: ANNA has won! Italy is only a "Third-World Store" with
