  • @thecommercialedge

you write it then. The League of Nations didn't think it was too preachy, considering they USED it in the Olympics.

  • so good! but it was so much more epic at the opening ceremonies!

  • GO CANADA GO. I liked your presentation at the opening ceremony in vancouver 2010 Shane! Felt proud to be Canadian!

  • Shane, you NAILED it. This is awesome.

    Love it.

  • awesome!!

  • I love this guy. I know him. He's a great person.

  • This poem took my breath away during the opening ceremony.

    he's such an inspiration

  • sad. it doesn't even rhyme

  • Like the poem but his hand gestures are annoying

  • I really liked this - this and KD were my favorite parts of the opening ceremonies - its too bad that version cannot be posted as it really rocked

  • this is pretty lame -ay?

  • Awesome! Saw the performance during the opening ceremonies. My family first settled on this here in the early 1600's. This land wasn't even called Canada then. Well done Shane. I AM CANADIAN. This great country of ours was built on immigration. We are the "TRUE NORTH STRONG & FREE"

  • I grew up saying Zee and I grew up in Canada ya dope.

  • most Canadians dont say Zee

  • He came to my school. :)

  • The full version is sooo much better

When I saw this one, and I saw it before the full version, I just thought "that isn't Canada..."

and then I watched the full version and I was like YESSSSSS

If you haven't heard to full version people, go listen NOW! It's really the real thing (:

  • Great song at the end...Toronto band called Hooded Fang...saw them in Toronto recently...awesome music...awesome band!

  • "...the abandon hesitation of those who can't wait"?

  • those who migrate into Canada

  • yeah, i'm having trouble figuring that one out as well....but it sounds really good doesn't it?

  • we are the true north, STRONG AND FREE!!!

  • put a video of him from the opening ceremonies on youtube please!!!

  • unfortanitly is illegal and will be remove right away as the opening ceremonies are copyrighted and are being sold on DVD for about 20$ canadian.

  • You are amazing! I'm not a Canadian, how you describe that beautiful country brought tears to my eyes. Your presentation, the representation of your indigenous people, and wildlife were the highlight of Opening Ceremony in Vancouver.

Thank you for sharing your talent with the rest of the world.

  • 5****, excellent:)

  • Loved it the part about please and thank you hit home.

    Proud to be Canadian

  • well done man!

also, what is that MUSIC at the end of the clip? it sounds cool.

  • Shane, you are the best! I can't wait to see you perform a the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival!

  • I'm from Kansas City and I just wanted Shane to know how he moved me. I've posted his poem on my Facebook page. He gave me goosebumps when I saw him on the Olympics and I wish my country had Health Care and a healthy economy. We should be more like Canada! He makes me want to come see our neighbors to the north and I will!

  • Canada will always be the best country in the world to mii:)

    (Italy's cool too)

  • Absolutely amazing.

My eyes were flooded with tears when I watched this at the opening ceremonies.

    Truly, this poem is... Great.

I don't have a way with words like Shane does so, I'll leave it to him to praise our beautiful country.

  • This was my absolute favorite part of the opening ceremonies. Your delivery gave me goosebumps and your words made me proud. Your poem is amazing, so true, and I'm glad you had the opportunity to share your gift with the world.

  • Second only to the swimming whales segment, Shane was my favorite part. You ROCKED it!

  • Funny how this is only the half mark of the real poem, but this is easily the best part- Makes me proud to be Canadian. Cheers Shane.

  • Every time I listen to this, I get goosebumps. When I watched it during the opening ceremonies, it brought tears to my eyes. I am not worthy to live in the same country he describes so beautifully.

  • This is great ,makes me proud to be Canadian

  • This guy came to my school and he was so cool. His words touched me :D

  • YO YO YO. I M DA COFFEE O LITTLE ITALY.

  • best moment of the opening ceremony

  • Best part of the opening ceremonies. It got away from all the lights and dancing and special effects and offered something so creative and original.

    Go Canada!

  • This was a very very proud moment for Canadians. Thank you for the words. The audio on this version is a bit too fast to understand. Anyone know where I can watch a clip of this good fella from the ceremonies?

  • The opening ceremony was great, and this was one of the best parts.

  • Saw this at the Olympics, and I was floored.

  • you were my favorite part of the Opening ceremony in Vancouver!!! awesome job man!

  • Outstanding! Love Love Love this poem. The performance at the Olympic Opening Ceremony was superb. No doubt about it, Canada and our Canadian neighbors are wonderful in many, many ways. As the poet so rightly points out, our Canadian cousins always remember to say please and thankyou - if only our brethren here in the USA were as polite. Go Shayne Go.

  • Thank You LaJollaByTheSea. And, we tend to apologize too much. Sorry about that.

  • Probably one of THE best moments of the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games!!

I have never heard a more accurate more beautiful way to sum up ..... Canada.

    :)

    Thank you for posting this!

  • Cringe worthy semi poetry...

  • Cringeworthy

    I have seen Morris dancing

    THAT is cringworthy

    This was amazing

Made me proud tp be Canadian

  • Thanks for your expert knowledge. You obviously know nothing about slam poetry. What a ridiculous internet flame. This delivery is no where near as good as the olympic version thought. It resonated much better at the slower pace.

  • I can't believe I had to scroll down this far before finding someone else who felt the same way as me. I didn't find anything stirring, and his trivial comments on the true character of Canada and Canadians did little more than echo beer commercials that have, apparently, been taken far too seriously. Please, there's far more to Canadian culture than trite observations concerning manners, and the alphabet.

  • @chronose seriously? ... take the time to give it a serious listen. He points out fundamental differences between Canadians and the rest of the world. That we aren't definable in a beer commercial, that we range from 'greasy spoon diners' to 'healthy living cafes' That we're conscious of a generation beyond our own and preservation. As for your comment about how trivial 'please' and 'thank you' are: Take the time to travel... seriously Canadians are loved throughout the world for that reason.

  • @chronose

Care to elaborate what those are?

I agree that there is indeed more, but I think there is more to life than simply tearing down the work of others, while doing nothing in way of progress towards what their work is trying to achieve.

  • why dont you give it a shot then goof, you are unpatriotic.......go move to the usa !

  • thats exactly what the poet is saying....and those beer ads are awsome

(poet is not talking about beer ads just you last sentence)

  • @chronose PLEASE, there's more to the poem than trite observations concerning manners and the alphabet...did you listen to the whole thing?..I know he's talking pretty quickly...

  • Proud to be Canadian!!!

    Go Canada Go!!

  • I want more!

  • For those who only just discovered Shane, this is someone who has been doing slam poetry for over a decade. In 2000 he became the first Canadian to win the Individual Championship title at the National Poetry Slam. I feel incredibly privileged to have seen him live on a number of occasions years ago and he will rock your socks every single time.

Be sure to hunt down his other works. They are well worth it.

  • Great stuff, now everyone will want to move here!!! :P

  • Suberb! But I prefer the version he did at the 2010 Opening Ceremonies...slower and so engaging. Wow.

  • me too

  • Damn.

Like, I want to BE Canadian now.

  • Amazing, my favorite part of the opening ceremony. It made me so proud to be Canadian :)

  • I loved it too; only he spoke way too fast!

  • During the Opening Ceremonies he said "home of the Rockets", which was a little distracting...

"Did he just say 'Rockets'? Who are the 'Rockets'? Is he talking about 'The Rocket'?"

  • Rocket richard the hockey player

  • Rockies, the maintain streching from canada all the way to Arizona?

  • The "Rocket" was Number 9 (which he also referred to) Maurice Richard...the greatest hockey player until Gretszky came along...then there was the "Pocket Rocket"...Henri Richard' (Maurice's brother who was equally famous). And the number "99" was for Gretszky.

  • this was great at the opening ceremony, beautiful writing, amazing performance

  • that was pretty awesome! Great Job, im a proud Canadian

  • Shane Koyczan is f**king golden. I encourage everyone to seek out his work and recordings, especially the album A Pretty Decent Cape In My Closet, his album with his band The Short Story Long, oh and see him live!

This is my voice, there are many like it but this one is mine!

  • Canada is the best " from A-Z, and yes we say Z not Zee" the best quot ever!

  • ``don`t let your luggage define your travels``

    great line

  • I love this<3

i was in tears as he was saying this, its so true! and i think this describes us s perfectly<3

    CaNaDa rocks:)

  • holy eff this was really good my jaw dropped

  • We our the 'True North and Land of The Free'. Slam poet A#1 Sir! Truly the beautiful global reaching insight of a Proud Country.

    Thank You

  • This is pretty darned good,eh?

  • The whole 3 hours of the opening ceremonies are available on iTunes for $2.

  • About time that someone actually put it into words. We all knew this we just didn't have the courage to stand up and say it. Way to go for giving such a positive slant on our country.

  • Awesome! OMG loved it! Seriously! XD I'm proud to be canadian ; )

  • ya..... Canadas awsome!

  • Excellent! We need more of this in Canada..

Anyone know if Shane Koyczan's version from the opening ceremonies is online yet?

  • I cant find it.. was hoping it would be by now...

  • ThinkAbout1t has put it up but I'm sure CTV will have it taken down soon!

  • amazing poet

  • very awesome

  • Canada is so beautiful. West coast especially.

  • My favorite line/lyric from him: Resentment is a poison you take, hoping the other person will die - so make every summer your Paris; that way you'll always have July.

  • anoteoftruth - he us speaking slam poet style, which is why there were different pauses and breaks. Check out TOFU the group he is with. They are great. Love Shane Koyzcan! Makes me proud to be a Yellowknifer first and foremost as well as Canadian.

  • This guy came to my school last year hahaha, I was so suprised when I saw him at the opening ceremonies :)

  • woo hoo

  • we say thank you and your welcone,

and we dont aplogize for it.

thank u big man for restoring my patronisim.

    good job!

  • This gave me goosebumps, and I'm not Canadian. It did however give me the desire to go for a visit during the summer.

  • That wa samazing, thats so much for expressing canada! :D

  • this was the perfect poem for the opening ceremony's.

  • Proud to be Canadian. Glad this guy was invited to speak at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympics.

  • shane did this poem at the opening ceremonies in vancouver, i saw it live, the best was "we are the true north strong and free" the crowd all screamed lol!

  • never felt prouder to be canadian!! :)

  • this is so canadian :)

  • This is what Canada need more of. We are a great country. Shane this is amazing.

    Proud to be Canadian

  • for some weird reason I feel like a molson?

  • For person that commented that for some weird reason he felt like Molson.... :))) Me and my boyfriend were watching opening ceremony, and right after this poen... (completely out of character) my boyfriend says " Damn, this makes me feel proud to be Canadian, I think I will put up Molson/ Canadian flag up on my facebook" and he did.

Thank yo so much... You made me proud to be privileged enough to be Canadian!

    :)))

  • BOOOOOOOOOOMER !

  • Bravo!

  • 'we are an expirement going right for a change!' I'm not canadian but damn thats good.

  • GO CANADA. I AM PROUD CANADIAN.

  • Well done

  • I am a Kiwi, my wife is Canadian, very awesome.

  • Makes me proud of my country

  • This was the only part of the opening ceremony I didn't like.

Why does spoken word have to come off as so pretentious and preachy?

  • I think it's just the tone of it.. I could never get into it either.. Tho I like what he's saying, where his hearts at.. But in a way I thought it could've been said even better. Sometimes space inbetween words can go a long way.

  • It truly is breathtaking once you set foot into Canada's vast wilderness.<3 I should know. ^.^

  • unbelievable!! Just a fantastic representation of our nation !! Right from the poem to the average guy shane is!....Made me so proud to be canadian!

  • Well done sir! I loved the image of Canada being a tapestry - treads of all colours woven together and we are still on the loom, with more threads being added!

  • its amazing , but, it sounds a bit negative, sounds like we Canadians have to prove to the rest of the world that we are the best nation in the world, but we are simply are, there is no ifs or buts about it , no need to prove it , We are nation that loves nature hates guns and helps everyone in the world when they are in pain.... i think We need to relax ! We are people that love and we always there to help, coz Canada helped us, to be who we are today!
