Thank you for all your comments guys! I find myself getting more education here than i have anywhere else! I'm hoping to get some new videos up this summer, i'll be working more or less full time so I hope i'll get some time to goof around with the truck a little more.
The Procharger C-1 or c-2 and a little mechanical know how should be easy to do and would net good gains all the way around. doing it to my 96 this spring. will let you all know!
@2011nm Go to w w w (dot) iskycams (dot) com/onlinecatalog.html I used the 331256 256-Supercam HYDRAULIC. Because I had a '78 300 CID, it had the 8.9:1 CR heads, which is golden with that cam. Just do everything I mentioned in my previous posts and you'll have a strong 300 with no surprises. The 300 is an ox motor, not a race horse. Don't be tempted by 4bbl carbs unless you're willing to fork out big buck$ for a massive cylinder head job and big cam to make it all work together.
i put a hedmann header on my 77 with an inline 6. i ran it into dual glasspacks. it idles like a V8 but doesnt have the same top end sound, more like a four bangin ricer but deeper. im also lookin at an offenhauser 4bbl manifold with an holley carb. its nice to be able to find performance upgrades even for an inline!!!
@2011nm I know you commented a loong time ago, but I was thinking about going up to a 4bbl Holley Carb and i was told the six can't get up enough gusto to use the last two barrels so it was pointless to spend the extra money on a 4bbl carb.
@Orttymonster1 yeah, thats what ive heard too. i decided the glasspacks werent loud enough so i cut it to straight headers. now im rebuilding the motor cuz something broke in the cam
@Orttymonster1 i got a 85 f-150 with the 300 6 cylinder. i put a cherry bomb glasspack on just behing the cab and no tail pipe coming out of the glasspack. it sounds sweet. if you want to break up the insulation theres two things you can do. drive around for a bit then put some water in the glasspack while its still hot. or heat up the mufler with a torch then hit it with a hammer
i have a 87 with efi manifolds im running dual 2 inch pipes to 2 2 1/4 flowtech raptors i have no cats on mine. for 23 bucks a muffler the sound is awesome sounds like a small 8 now
Finally, after you get a big bore Carter YF 1-bbl, it is vital that the linkages have NO slop in them! The link that connects the metering rod to the throttle can't have any slop. I ended up drilling out the original holes and used thick copper wire and made a new link rod
The 300 LOVES a richer metering rod. Find one made for pre-smog engines. The metering rod is adjustable inside the carb. There is a cap above the screw on the airhorn body. Take the cap out so you can adjust the rod easily
I did the electric fan bit and it was more hassle than it was worth. The stock fan didn't take that much power. I needed a better fan because of the A/C
Go to the junkyard, if there are any left, and head for the 70's Ford cars. They had flex blade fans with uneven spacing! They moved a lot of air and were quiet. Get the fan spacer, too
Make sure your vacuum advance still works. It's adjustable with a hex key. Ditch the EGR, then slow down the mechanical advance curve so it doesn't ping
I've done a lot of trial 'n error with my '78 F-100 w/300 I-6 back in the day
The stock manifolds are fine for a daily driver. Grind out the rough spots inside. Edelbrock made a few 1-bbl manifolds for the 240. The 300 gets strangled by it
The Carter YF will give you a larger venturi than the YFA currently on your 300
Have a machine shop fix you up with an adapter so you can use 2.5" exhaust
Edelbrock RPM mufflers are quieter and breathe better. I used an Isky 256 cam and it worked great
@2011nm Don't waste money on headers. I did that and had nothing but trouble with gasket problems and heat under the hood. Without a hot spot under the carb to vaporize the fuel, the engine will never run right. To keep the heat riser and improve flow, I fabricated an adapter to bolt up 2.5" exhaust.
This was all before the internet and eBay. If I could do it over again now, I'd go here w w w stevensparts (dot)com slashFORD EXHAUST MANIFOLD (dot)htm and get a new 300HD manifold.
i agree a flowmaster or magnaflow with a k & n.....but i'd rather go with spectre i've been using them and can tell a big difference in the performance
The most effective, visually legal way to get the most sound out the CID i6 in my experience was a hollowed cat that leads right into a 12" cherrybomb glasspack followed by an elbow pointing toward the ground... As long as it's behind the cab and you don't have a cap on your truck it's completely legal... You will have a tough time at emissions though, obviously.
@Lukeandree2505 if it is a 77' emissions are bypassed in most states. if the engine didnt originally have a cat it is illegal, at least in south dakota
I have an 86 f150 with a 300 six/4 speed manual combo. I cut off my exhaust at the cat and clamped on a 3inch single exhaust through a flowmaster 40 with a side exit in front of the passanger side rear tire. sounds as good as it can. Honestly I thought it would be loud and aggressive it really isn't too bad it has a jaguar sort of sound.I wish it had a bigger carb the 1bbl runs out of steam at around 3000-3500rpm on its way to 5200 rpm. a 600 4bbl and offy intake and it would be bad ass soundin
I would recommend keeping the muffler. I have a flowmaster original 40 series with a turndown and no cats. It's loud, compare to v8 its loud but diffrent tone than a v8.
If you want your truck to rumble like a v8 sorry ain't going to happen... the only way I herd of was to have the center 4 cylinders in one pipe and the other 2 in the other which will give it uneven pulse. I haven't done this before.
For exhuast for performance...headers merged in a 2 pipe to Y..2.25 pipe with magnaflow...
I kinda want the sound to be quite while idling but loud on the acceleration. I looked at Magnaflow's selection, from the ones i have seen, they sorta have what i'm looking for. If i will ever replace the muffler i have it will be when it dies. I'm not in a rush to throw away a good muffler.
@Orttymonster1 Mine is exactly the sound you want but its like that because the exhaust isnt bolted on all the way to the manifold, the power of the exhaust leak.
Put a sporty flowmaster muffler on it, inline sixes sound like a duck farting in the water when they are made to be loud......

@Orttymonster1 do you know any performance tips for a stock 300 straight 6?
bmcdo123 5 months ago
@bmcdo123 I'm sorry i don't, The most i've been able to do with this truck all summer was replace the valve cover gasket, I've been too busy :S
I'm constantly on the search though for tips myself if I come across anything i think is substantial I'll try to pass it on.

if you check out the video of the exhaust on my truck i think you might like it. i have a single flowmaster exhaust and it sounds pretty good.

If you like your fingers, I'd slam in a Zirgo fan ( 16 in. 3000 or 3600 cfm)
I bought a Painless wiring thermo-switch, and Bosch relay, etc. to activate it.
Put the switch near the thermostat housing.
With the 85 and up heads, it will screw into the therm housing or use a 45 deg. brass adaptor.
It appears a 100 amp alternator is needed for night driving with high beams, driving lights, etc. though.
But the fan is reliable, powerful and sort of loud, but in a cool way.
