    nice song by the way

  • Is that Ron Howard (opie) from Andy Griffith

  • somebody knows if this piece pertain to the public domain??

I need know it for make a cover and include it in an album.

Im from chile so dont criticize my inglish c:

  • Go mr. gillespie he is awesome

  • like if ur Tunisian :)

  • How's this crazy trumpet with the multiple valves called?

  • now this takes me back.

  • can anyone tell me who are the musicians playing here? I know the sax is not charlie cause its not an alto saxophone, but a tenor. so, who is it?

  • @ManelRuivo don byas is on tenor

  • I used to listen to this a lot a year or so ago on summer nights laying around in my bed

reading short stories of different authors. I started listening to this song again, and I got really

sad remembering those small memories. Then I felt really sad and scared for some reason

because I couldn't never feel like how I did them and do the same things like that. But I still

love this song, its no longer just a song, its a piece of my memory.

  • Chaka Khan did a nice version of this in the 80s!

  • holy shit those fuckin cheeks, looks like a frog XD great tune though

  • Damn it looks like he got a couple of oranges in his mouth when he plays

  • love how the trumpet is bent up, that actually happened by a horrible accident but when dizzy played the broken trumpet it was louder and better than before, so he kept it like that, a jazz miracle

  • @jimpoopy16 That's a really dumb story. Dizzy gillespie had that trumpet custom made so he could hear himself better.

  • @jimpoopy16 Actually the horn was a Martin Committee Custom that was manufactured that way. In Diz's big band all the trumpet section had one, including Lee Morgan.

  • Awsome!!!!!!

  • i clicked here because i saw the thumbnail.

  • 0:24 looks like this guy Kobi Arad for some reason

  • who is in the picture at 0:24?

  • correct me if im wrong, but words i manifest was a James Brown sample?

  • @returninginsurgent the main melody is from a different version of this song. the James Brown sample was used for the drums and the secondary melody as well as a few random James Brown voice samples from the song "Bring It Up (Hipster's Avenue)".

  • @eboyd32 thanks....that's what I thought. The bassline from this song (really the charlie parker version) along with the horns and hollar from "Bring it"...nice. I coulda swore that this melody was the JB song, just filtered for the bassline. You know what.....there are two versions of Words I manifest...one may NOT have this melody.

  • @returninginsurgent all versions i can find have the melody from the Charlie Parker version of this. a few may be in better or worse quality but that's it, though the wikipedia page entry for "No More Mr. Nice Guy" lists "Manifest" as well as a remix and, if i recall correctly, states that the remix is the version that was popularized. i do not own NMMNG, however, and therefore have not seen whether or not there was a remix or if it was just a wikipedia page error.

  • @eboyd32 if im not mistaken, the video, album and remix versions are different...i think you're right tho.

  • i gotta play this solo part on trombone...

  • Using a bent trumpet with a microphone is easier since the natural posture when blowing a trumpet is about 30 deg below the horizontal. THe bending just makes up for it. If you look at Miles he is always looking down with his trumpet: I bet he did not use the bent one to avoid people saying he was imitating Dizzy. Is it true that it came from an accident with the trumpet? Who know?

  • Just snort that bass line and tell me you're not knocked on your arse right now.

  • they say don't puff your cheeks out cuz they don't want you to end up as good as dizzy

  • @TheGameboycolor2 Actually it's because if you puff your cheeks it makes the air take longer to get to the instrument, and makes you generally out of tune, but you know it could be that as well.

  • All of you who are just getting into jazz: Enjoy! And remember bebop isn't the only great stuff -- Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis are completely different, and completely wonderful.

  • 16 people spent a night in iraq.

  • Wow. Playing trumpet actually cause physical harm to him? Maybe this is why they say don't puff your cheeks. You kind of have to for low notes, but I don't think low notes will do that... o_o

  • @b0n3z3z you actually don't...puffing out your cheeks is the wrong way to play trumpet, even if Dizzy does do it...it takes away from your dynamic range--which, for Dizzy, isn't really a big deal since he's more of a screamer

  • Dr. Huxtable from The Cosby Show kept talking about this track in one of the Episodes.. that's how I remembered it.

That, and Tunisia is in the news alot these days!

  • I dont think the bell has anything to do about his playing. He hits his high notes cause he practices, his lips were made for it

  • @doyouwantfries20 All the bell does is change the timbre, like a mute.

  • I hope you realize that you are telling a master how to play.

Who cares if he puffs his cheeks? He swings hard and plays amazing!

  • he's puffing his cheeks..

  • I wonder how much higher he cud play if he had a regular trumpet

  • @tkman122 You do realize that playing high all comes from the embrochure, right? A bent trumpet merely changes the tone quality.

  • @SladenKing but bending the air makes him have to put in more air since its not going straight

  • @SladenKing *bending trumpet

  • Cheeks.....

  • WOOOHH!!! was just lookin around for jazz songs and came across this,, I recognised the words I manifest sample instantly,,crazyyy!!! and this is great song btw!

  • if you're being precise about it gang starr sampled charlie parkers version

  • @danthedonHBB did they really? i was wondering because it sounded a bit different. thanks!

  • @eboyd32 yeah, if you hear the charlie pakrer version it sounds just like gang starrs, though i think they maybe sped it up a bit

  • @danthedonHBB thanks for the vid, you should also check Dizzy's virtuoso protegé Arturo Sandoval, in action:

  • @rodcrippler none of the links work :(

  • can someone tell me who is playing what instrument in his piece? sorry i'm new at this music! thanks !:)

  • this is a beautiful song!

  • instead of the like button, i wish there was a I LOVE button

  • No one can play a melody (or sing a song) like the one who composed it. And what a brilliant musician the composer was in this case.

  • does anyone have a transcription for dizzy's solo? its pretty amazing

  • Why do his cheeks go like that? Aren't you usually suppose to keep them like flat?

  • @andyydna101 I think it's circular breathing

But It could also be his style?

  • @andyydna101 From what my horn player friends have told me you are supposed to keep your cheeks in/flat so this is technically probably not the correct technique but it works for him.

  • SIMPLY GREAT!

  • His cheeks freak me out, but damn he can play circles around many and more. Much respect.

  • Stop haunting me Dizzy !

  • Does anyone know where I can find the score for this? Or has anyone tried notating this piece down? Would appreciate any help given because I'm doing a study on this piece! Thanks! :)

  • kids dont appreciate there music or its origin. they think their music is just that. But if was;t for the founding father's and mothers, we wouldn;t have any rock, rap, hip hop. or pop.

  • @SpiceyMcHaggis1 NOT ALL KIDS >___<

  • @SpiceyMcHaggis1 men.. im a kid.. am a trumpetist and do appreciate this stuff.. i really think i appreciate this music better than you -.-

  • lol wow dizzy's playing makes me dizzy

  • can someone tell me what key the bass is in at the beginning cuz i wana c if i can learn it

  • @killaXbass oh yeah, it is very cool. I hope you understand me. The involved chords are: Eb7 and Dm.

    The notes: Eb,Bb,Db,Eb,Db,Bb,D,F,A,B,A,D,Eb,Bb,Db,Eb,Db,Bb..........

  • @killaXbass Do you know the D minor 6 chord or arpeggio ? It's D F A B.

  • In the dislikes list there are 14 people who don't enjoy dizzy, they just dislike jazz...

  • @briancolejennifer yeah dude shut the fuck up, im 15 and my life is about jazz and bebop!

  • It's killer, for sure. But the best version (in my opinion) is the hotter-than-fire version to be found on Diz's 1954 album, "Afro". Now THAT is something else!

  • One of the greatest jazz trumpeteers of all time!

    Rest In Peace

    DIZZY GILLESPIE (1917-1993)

  • Am I the only person who thinks the theme sounds a hell of a lot like Yes's Long Distance Runaround? Seriously, go listen to it right now.

  • Yeah Dizzy was definitely one of the jazz elite! Miles Davis, Sonny Stitt, John Coltrane, Earl Bostic, and the Gil Evans Orchestra, are among my faves as well

  • I did a report on him :-) he's good

  • all other jazz is shit compared to this masterpiece.

  • who is on vibes??

    wonderful

  • loveit!

  • 13 people propable hate their lifes....

  • @takanto1

you are so right, 13 people probably HAVE no life ... and probably never saw Dizzy live.

Incomparable, thank you for posting, and thank you Dizzy

  • does anybody know where i can find the original arrangement of this online? dizzy did it in 3/4 with nothing but hand percussion, flute, bass, and himself, and i have it on cd but can't find it online

  • I haven't listened to the Top 40 "Hit Parade" since about 1980. Who needs to, when you have brilliant stuff like this to listen to?

  • Dizzy is the man! This song is so classic!

  • Cheeks of steel

  • Still one of the greatest recordings ever made Feb 22, 1946 for RCA Victor. Originally written in 1942 as 'Interlude,' Gillespie renamed the tune to its current title during the pivotal Allied offensive in Tunisia (1942-43), a critical turning point during WWII. For a real treat, recommend you listen to this tune as was played by Gillespie, Parker, Roach, and the great Al Haig at the June 22, 1945 Town Hall concert - a full 8 months BEFORE this Gillespie recording.

  • drgaasfvasdsd

  • I have to do a concert with this song on the recorder at the beginnning its easy by the end it is the hardest.(I have the hardest part (part 1) )( there are three parts).I need help at the last part.(Progress report is coming out in 4 days!)(I think I might be the only person who would want to get an A.( I have straight A`s and I want to keep it that way.)

  • I always wondered if Gang Starr ever sampled A Night in Tunisia, and I guess now I finally found my answer :)

I think this is my favorite version of this classic. Dizzy you were awesome!

  • i love this piece, thank you for posting this! :) if you're interested check out my flute version of this piece on my channel page and tell me what you think! :D:D:D

  • My high school is playing this arrangement for our end of the year concert, we're playing along side Dan Miller and other pros.

  • hey I'm Tunisian :DD

    thanks Dizzy

  • Makes me want go to Tunisia!!

  • 12 people died in there beds last night, Dizzy LIVES ON!!

  • @UNSCArbiter *Their

  • you ever seen the bass gang's version? it's on youtube. Highly recommend it ^-^

  • @Labdude0 jj johnson and kai winding had a version but it hasnt seen the light of day in here yet /you can listen to israel by them which sounds something like that

  • @spacepatrolman yeah, that's some good jazz there :D But the bass gang takes a really awesome twist on it--they're a bass quartet, and they give it a whole new sound

  • What kind of trumpet is that?

  • @uhohwhoops on his birthday, as a surprise, his friends hired some comedians, and they went overboard dancing, and they accidently kicked the trumpet, which cause it to bend about 45 degrees. He was devastated, but as soon as he found out it sounded different, like a trumpet with a mute, he decided he was going to use it. . He was planning to have it patented, but it was already patented in 1861by a French musician...

BASICALLY it was rlly an accident LOL

  • @TheMrTim Rad!

  • @TheMrTim Lol, he didn't use it because of the sound, he actually used it so he could read music and still look have his sound projects forward. As you probably noticed he puffs hi cheeks which is not acceptable to most, so he broke a lot of rules

  • @TheMrTim my spelling was atrocious in that last post btw

  • @TheMrTim I heard someone sat on it...

  • @uhohwhoops A cool one!

  • @uhohwhoops Its a unusual one. I play a normal one, and you dont see it that much. Ive seen it once or twice out of the hundreds of instrument payers ive seen.

  • @uhohwhoops is a custom made one just for dizzy so he didnt have o play up he could have his head tled down while playing out towards the audience

  • Words are wasted here. Tunisia is a classic and needs to be heard often and studied by talented students.

  • To this day I do not understand how he played with 100% puffed cheeks. What a different embouchere he must have had! Same effect though. Amazing trumpeter.....

  • Dizzy = Amazzy

  • i heard a recording of this song with ella and I can't find it anywhere...

  • fresh

  • Hip hop fans should recognize this as real music..

    And start over again.

  • @steveknows62 shut the fuck up and just enjoy the music you pompous asshole.

  • @eboyd32 Yo!! Thanks for the history lesson. I always listened to Jazz when I was a shortie because my uncle played it along with Latin Jazz & Salsa. And I grew up listening to Gangstarr, Poor Righteous Teachers, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. Hip- Hop was beautiful then. I was just listening to King Sun & dissecting his lyrics. Man his lyrics were based on self-empowerment, & knowledge. Today hip-hop is a marketing tool for the U.S. incarceration business. Just my opinion. Much love, Peace.

  • @pitolove71 no doubt! jazz officionados like the idiot above need to realize that hip hop pretty much resurrected jazz and they should be grateful. digging in crates and sampling gave birth to a whole new generation of jazz fans. i owe my interest in jazz to hip hop, plain and simple. regardless of how i got into it though, i love jazz now.

  • @eboyd32 wut a moron. MOST Hip Hop particularly contemporary, is no talent bullshit. Get the fuck over it.

  • @1Rhythmystic Did you see red because he used the word idiot? Obviously that's annoying but I think there is something in what he says. It's not like jazz was ever dead etc but it's true that some people have discovered jazz via other genres. It's also true that a lot of hip hop lyrics are simply an unintelligent glorification of crime but any form of music could potentially be spoilt like that. I'd rather focus on how good hip, hop can be, despite some people just not having a taste for it.

  • @eboyd32 You found jazz by way of hip hop, so that must be how your generation found it? I owe my interest in jazz to ignoring hip hop which was and is getting played all around at the expense of jazz. Perhaps you should not assume that your experience is something that your generation shares. Hip hop resurrecting jazz? Have you been to New Orleans? Chicago? New York? San Fran? Kansas City? Jazz was never dead!

  • @dymecoar - Agreed!! You told him. Good job! I hear ya....Jazz is never dead! It will live on forever. RIP Dizzy and all the other Jazz greats.

  • Comment removed

  • @steveknows62 you are an idiot i listen to hip hop AND this (not lil-wayne, 50 cent and all them mind you) but saying something like that is prejudice and foolish, there is no need to start over at all. who are you to say which is real music anyway.

  • @thePedro1er i must have misunderstood what you said. your comment came off as "hip hoppers need to listen to this, take notes, and stop making shitty music." i apologize for the misunderstanding though i am still unsure what you meant by your comment.

  • @eboyd32 i was just saying that what steveknows62 said is a silly thing to say. he most likely doesnt listen to hip hop

so why should he say that hip hop fans dont know what real music is? and that this is the only music to listen to? there is no "real" music and there are allot of hip hop acts or producers out there which could be considered just as good as these guys. just because of all that "disposable commercial rap" hip hop has been given a bad name. but there are great artists within it.

  • @thePedro1er lol that confused me haha. i thought you were responding to me and i thought you were him lol. ok, we're on the right track now lmao

  • @steveknows62 This has got to be one of the most ignorant and biased comments I've ever read.

  • @steveknows62 some hip hop is very poetic, love it or hate it, it has it's place.

  • @DwiteTheSpriteKnight Maybe but that is a very small minority. Steve probably just listens to the radio....

  • @steveknows62 Y'know, I may be in the minority here, but I think it's great that there are so many different kinds of music, because we have the freedom of choice.

I'm really glad I don't subscribe to your brand of musical fascism.

  • @steveknows62 Some of us can appreciate both. Amazing, I know.

  • Who's on the tenor?

  • Here's Dizzy taken' em' right up to the edge...gotta lov3 this..

  • One of my favourite tunes - and favourite musician.

  • What kind of mute does he use here? Is it a Hammond?

  • @Ricksarm13

    It's a cup mute.

  • @Ricksarm13 Harmon mute with the stem thing inside of it.

  • @Ricksarm13 Wait, actually I think it was a cup mute.

  • what is that trumpet at 1:12 called? do want

  • @4tothepowerofcheese

    Rotary valve?

  • @James9533 no the one with a bunch of valves. i didn't count them but it was definitely more than 3 or 4

  • I started listening to this when I heard that the Tunisian president had been deposed.

  • i love him he is my idol

  • Uno che come giudizio scrive " bella merda" che musica può ascoltare? "Amici" , X Factor, o i Dream Theater... che cultura musicale può avere..quella del mediocre Italiano ignorante!!!!!

  • Awesome.

  • listen mate dinni talk alod o pish, a play euphonium and the puffed out cheeks is circular breathing, gon dae sumn btr thn talk pish

  • who is tis saxophonist?

  • @Prettlera It's actually a trumpet.

  • @Prettlera Oh wait, there's also a sax... hm no idea.

  • For anyone who writes any thing else about how it is incorrect to puff the cheeks when playing the trumpet here is some info. Yes, it is incorrect for most players, but some, such as Dizzy here, have a tissue and muscle condition of weakened oral and throat walls causing them to expand involuntarily. If you will notice at 0:55, then you can see that it is not just his cheeks but also his throat that puffs out. This condition is also more common in men than women.

  • Can youtube please create a seperate area for 13 to 16 year olds to comment

  • @briancolejennifer but I'm 16 and I LOVE this....

  • @TheGameboycolor2 @briancolejennifer I'm 16 too and I ADORE THIS. It's like, so amazing :')

  • @OtakuGirl001

Brilliant review. Would you care to grace YouTube with any more of your thoughtful critiques?

  • Comment removed

  • @illogicalman21 Just goes to show that not all embouchures have to be textbook. If it works it works. John Iveson (trombonist) is another good example. The most peculiar embouchure, yet he's still a natural. Anything else you'd like comment on? Okay.

  • @briancolejennifer You see im 15 and I love Jazz and i play saxophone. But chill I know what do You mean :)

  • @briancolejennifer

Which is foolish, because I loved this song when I was 13

  • came here after Roland Dyens' arrangement :P

  • those cheeks!!!!!!1

  • EXCELLENT version

  • the secret is they tell us not to puff our cheeks out just because we might turn out as good as Dizzy

  • 1:11 what the eff? what kind of trumpet is that? O.O
