What a beautiful automobile. And at every angle. It's amazing how something that you remember as being cutting edge for its time when new can become so antiquated ... looking back at it. (But heck, my hair really isn't that gray and my ears haven't really gotten all that hairy.) Hopefully, the cost of gas will continue to rise forcing the evolution of our transportation system(s) for a stronger USA. We can do better.
@knipdlo It was the Imperial that was always last. This Riviera would have beat the bunch to Santa Rosita by 3 hours minimum, but that would have ruined the picture.
@quirpco Not neccesarily, you should've seen the typical European car back then. My father was driving a Citroen 2CV and a Citroen DS when we were stationed in Europe as well as an Austin Mini. Those cars had their faults too. Mainly mini donuts for tires and engines by Briggs & Stratton.
@Kuru1991 Good point, and I agree! My comment was mainly concerning handling, where the Riviera looked a bit comical floating side to side through those hard turns. Sorry, I should've been more specific.
Could they make new Rivieras with modern powerful and efficient(er) engines and have steel/chrome classic bumpers without rubber bumper-guards today? Would be cool to have a bit stylish modern cars, Buick doesn't have a 2 door, a new Retro-Riviera would be awesome!
My cousin Lovell, all he drove was the Buick Rivieras nothing else. That 455 4bbl Buick was a helluva motor!!! My imagine drag racing a Riviera GS on a drag strip, a/c on, tape deck playing and still eating chinese food out the box, and no mess!
There was definitely a major difference in the handling departments on the 1972 Riveria's than the 1973 Riveria's from the road tests and the 1972 Riveria seemed to have better handling and performance, they were both the GS models
Nice cars, 1972 was definitely one of the last of the really good years of the automotive industry before they've started putting the crappy Emission Control devices in their vehicles along with the rubber bumper guards.

That's slow my modern V6 SUV standards. In fact, the 0-60 time is virtually identical to that of my 2009 Toyota Yaris 5 speed manual.

An 8-tack tape player.
There must be people who collect those tapes.
One can't judge the car for it, since cassette tapes are now obselete.

I've always liked the wraparound instrument panel. The same can't be said for the overall body appearance.
