Today I was in the S-21 prison museum in Phnomh Penh. The Killings Fields are a quiet, respectful memorial, but the former prison delivered a punch to the stomach. Seeing the old classrooms that had been turned into torture chambers, seeing the instruments of torture, the photographs of people writhing in anguish, stripped of their humanity, seeing rooms and rooms full of the mug shots of people you would see anywhere on the streets of Phnomh Penh...I sobbed for those poor souls, I grieved.

@allante715 no. that's incorrect. Pol Pot was a communist. He was the leader of the Khmer Rouge and the political executive which he ran was called the Communist Party of Kampuchea. The west feared that a communism would be stronger as a result of another communist state in indo-china so did not help pol pot rise to power directly. However they did make the condidtions ripe for Pol Pot to take power by weakening the previous regime, economically and by bombing the country.
These subtitles are lies. A real CNN journalist interviewed him (this video) and it said that Pol Pot was not regretful and he didn't get to finish what he was there to do.

You should read "Cambodia 1975-1982" by Michael Vickery. He explains the political rationale behind Pol Potism. Basically Cambodian society was in crisis - Pnomh Penh was not a viable city, it produced nothing and fed off the peasantry. There were far too many people with degrees and no jobs for them.
@xx1994xxversion2 Continued - The DK movement was a peasant movement (not really communist) in reaction to this. It was misguided but it had a rational kernel. Level it and return it to countryside. Pol Pot and his DK accomplices were despicable, but he was no more or less impeachable than other "genocide artists."
If you look up "The Life of Pol Pot" here, there's an interview in...I believe it was the 4th part, with a journalist who personally met Pol Pot. She says that he was very soft-spoken and that it was really hard to "see the evil in him", unlike with most dictators. Pol Pot himself is quoted as having said that he was shy and didn't want people "to know" he was a leader when he spoke with them. He didn't resort to a personality cult until China pressured him into it in 1978, either.

@allante715 no. that's incorrect. Pol Pot was a communist. He was the leader of the Khmer Rouge and the political executive which he ran was called the Communist Party of Kampuchea. The west feared that a communism would be stronger as a result of another communist state in indo-china so did not help pol pot rise to power directly. However they did make the condidtions ripe for Pol Pot to take power by weakening the previous regime, economically and by bombing the country.

@xx1994xxversion2 This is not very accurate. What you're implying is that there was no rational reason for anything he did, unlike Mao or Stalin? You should read "Cambodia 1975-1982" by Michael Vickery. He explains the political rationale behind Pol Potism. Basically Cambodian society was in crisis - Pnomh Penh was not a viable city, it produced nothing and fed off the peasantry. There were far too many people with degrees and no jobs for them.

@xx1994xxversion2 Continued - The DK movement was a peasant movement (not really communist) in reaction to this. It was misguided but it had a rational kernel. Level it and return it to countryside. Pol Pot and his DK accomplices were despicable, but he was no more or less impeachable than other "genocide artists."

If you look up "The Life of Pol Pot" here, there's an interview in...I believe it was the 4th part, with a journalist who personally met Pol Pot. She says that he was very soft-spoken and that it was really hard to "see the evil in him", unlike with most dictators. Pol Pot himself is quoted as having said that he was shy and didn't want people "to know" he was a leader when he spoke with them. He didn't resort to a personality cult until China pressured him into it in 1978, either.

Most personal accounts I've heard about Stalin say that he was a rude asshole(Lenin even wrote in a letter to the Congress that he should be replaced as General Secretary because of it). Hitler was apparently pretty unlikable in person, too. I don't know about Saddam, though.

@junkdeal I guess there is nothing special. I think this person did not kill any person (possibly except military fights), but this interview or what he (with pain) says indicates, that obviously some of his men he could not control did possibly some bad things. But I think the most deaths are form the wide area bombings of the B-52 bombers of the USA. I also subsume this was the reason to evacuate the capital city. However, the US defense industry newspapers and TV stations know to make hate.
