Technically Steele is correct.....The Republican party re-organized themselves in a re-grouping......before some were the "Conscience Whigs"(anti-slavery whigs)......most people do not realize that the Constitution was almost not written because of anti slavery delegates and pro-slavery delegates crossing hairs.. The Republican party organized itself in 1854 and was made up mostly of anti-slavery organizers and activist...without them slavery would of progressed through the early 20th century.
