SO gorgeous - we had a corgi growing up (Bunny). Got her from a breeder as a pup and she had 14 happy years with us. However, since then I have discovered the vast world of amazing dogs that is Rescue I would never do that again. Seriously, if you are thinking of getting a new best friend, go to your local shelter and see for yourself how many smart, affectionate and still happy dogs there are sitting in cages, waiting for a second chance, after being abandoned.

@bunnywog For most breeds, that is excellent advice. However it really does not apply here. Look up degenerative myelopathy. I've seen a corgi that had this disease waste away. It was heart breaking. A reputable breeder will test each puppy for this.

@mspeir I'm so sorry for your friend's dog and for your friend - but I'm sad that the general misconception is, like yours I guess, that rescue dogs are all mutts with problems - it's not true, I'm afraid rescue dogs also come in from breeders and pet shops - and breeders, no matter how reputable, also produce dogs with problems (that sometimes end up in the pound!)

@bunnywog I fully understand your point. I don't think all rescue dogs are mutts and I have had great dogs from rescues. What I am saying is that given the medical problems (particularly DM) in Corgis, a rescue dog may be a very short term and heart breaking relationship.

Yes, breeders can and do breed "bad" dogs, but there are very stringent guidelines from the two American Corgi associations in regards to breeding. I proper breeder will have performed the tests and certify the dog.
