BTW man, I always loved the riff at 1:17 to 1:34. when we did this song in front of a good 300 people this was the most commented on bit by some very talented bands some of whom have now moved into light stardome or at least on thier way. I thought you should know dude. I'd strongly urge you to incorporate that into a really strong dark song and lock it down. All the best IC.

When writing solos, i get rly stumped. say its a backing track in E with E G# and C# ( i think thats 1 4 6) what scales would i use so i can go over the entire neck

E would be the scale containing the notes E,F#,G#,A,B,C#D#,E so it would be 1 3 6. So the main scale you could use would be E major. If you want to go up the neck, you need to know the other positions of E major (which are also "modes") and how to play these up and down one string as well

so are the other postions just the same scale on a different position, so like instead of the e on the 12 fret 6th string the root note is on the 2nd fret 4th string?

@Ablithealbino that would be an example. So you'd start on the 2nd fret, then play 4th fret, 6th fret, then go to the 3rd string and play 2nd fret, 4th fret, etc. or you could start the scale on the 7th fret, 5th string

haha, I know what you mean. I think that can contribute to a driving force because it kind of awakens your own expectations, as long as you don't overdo it and guitar playing keeps the enjoyment factor. For learning theory, I recommend learning the concepts, that is, how to construct scales/chords and how to use them so you're not just playing the chords. There's a lot of books out there on theory, my website has a couple books that i'm using if you're interested

lol, thank you! Well I haven't "mastered" it but it took me about a year or so to get it to this point. It's a complete change of picking style, so it takes time. If you haven't yet, try using some of the stuff from my lesson videos, and that might help you progress

Haha we all have to start somewhere. I started with metallica too- enter sandman, sanitarium, one, master of puppets, etc. Good playing comes from lots of practice. I was learning slower solos after 6 months or so, but they were sloppy as hell lol. Just keep at it, it'll take time
