@queenmagic1982 John Farrar..............a frequent Olivia collaborator---Hopelessly Devoted To You & You're The One That I Want, from Grease especially!
you guys are skipping every part of the movie........I've seen XANADU so many times and they showed the whole scene. NOT 1 scene is Left out of XANADU! ! !
Very interesting footage. You know, this Production Reel, along with The "Making Of" TV Special and the '79 HBO segment covering a wrap party for the first day of shooting would've made the ULTIMATE bundle of DVD/Blu-Ray Extras. But since Universal were too cheap to include these materials(or even CLIPS of them) on the 2008 "Magic Edition", We were freekin' CHEATED yet again! Oh well, maybe the BLU-RAY will rectify that problem. MAYBE...Or not...
Interesting hearing the early demo of Magic and an alternate take and unmixed version of "Suddenly." I love this movie. It's a damn shame that the building wasn't preserved and turned into some kind of Hollywood museum. Wish Olivia could have bought it. :)
Fascinating to see a preliminary, less than polished version of "I'm Alive," probably the only good number in "Xanadu" (well, maybe that and Gene Kelly's dance with Olivia Newton-John). Agree with nzflyingmattress about hearing the muse laugh after she comes to life.
Yup, that is John Farrar. Why they used this version instead ONJ's for this is unknown and a bit baffling. Guess this short film was done quickly. Who knows.
I used to work at the Pan Pacific Bldg in 1985 as a private security watchman. It was a dilapidated spooky place at that time, they were due to tear it down completely that year but i think it was delayed for some time. I remember a friend was visiting one day and we spray-painted "Xanadu Rules" all over the outside of the place, which i was later fired for.
Oh boy... I've seen this movie God knows how many times, and I can spot the differences like gangbusters. I'm Alive sounds too Adult Contemporary (and that's probably the last place ELO would be musically, say I), the VFX are different, there's an extra line from Sonny at 3:00, Magic sounds like a Hall & Oates song (I Can't Go for That comes to mind), and the scene at 4:20 was probably the original take (in the finished film, you can see Sonny's smock or whatever changing shades of blue).
magic singer is like the bee gees singer barry or maurice i don't know anymore

I'm not really mad about that version of "Magic" - who's singing it?
bennjr 2 years ago
@bennjr It's a demo by the song's author, John Farrar.

I love how Muse 2 laughs, I wish they kept that in the original, it's magic and mischief, which the gods were!

Probably a rough-cut while the film was still in editing and post-prod?
ONJ's version was still being mixed and dialogue being dropped in and balanced?
Some of the dialogue sounds like alternate or discarded takes - lines aren't as well-delivered...

This movie really has earnt its stripes over the years, people have a deep affection for it and are fiercely protective of it.
it was obviously made with a lotta love and it has a warm heart that is so resonant that it endures. I loved it in 1980 and still love it today.
