  • motorcycle cops are not allowed to pull anybody over whether it is a warning or a ticket once it starts to get dark.

  • Lane Splitting is legal in CA & there are NO laws on the books for SPECIFIC rules to the practice. Bikers who split lanes are sometimes cited for

    VC 22350 basic speed law

    VC 21658 governs lane changes

VC 21755 allows passing on the right under safe conditions

CHP Web site says lane splitting is permissible if done in a safe and prudent manner, and that interpretation is completely at the digression of LE

    IEDarla.com

  • So much disinformation here. Lane splitting is legal in California because 1) there is no law stating that two vehicles cannot occupy the same lane and 2) there is no law explicitly banning lane splitting.

*Most* states have either a traffic code banning lane sharing by a motorcycle, or a more blanket ban on two vehicles (of any kind) being in the same lane at the same time.

You can be nabbed on other infractions, e.g. improper lane change or dangerous driving.

  • @SatansSpatula A little correction. It is not legal OR illegal if there's no law. And yes, it is up to the police officer to decide whether or not lane-sharing/lane-splitting by a rider is dangerous or not in highways or city streets.

  • @PsychoSpiral that's not a correction, that's just more disinformation. If there is no law against something, then it is legal, by definition.

The legality of lane sharing has nothing to do with whether or not your behavior can be cited for failure to maintain lane control, driving without due caution, or any number of other highway codes.

  • why shifting a gear if one is enough?

  • Its legal split lanes just not when traffic is moving faster than 35 mph

  • @dirtjumpbmxer

Go back to school; are your comments purposefully this way?

  • You rarely see this since motorcycle cops are supposed to keep BOTH hands on the controls, but yeah I've been instructed to pass, split and slow down by CHIPS before. They're usually pretty ok guys.

  • @dirtjumpbmxer It's clear that you're a mouth breathing idiot without a clue. Judging from your willingness to open your mouth and insert your foot, you're the dumbest person to have commented on this video yet. Congratulations dipshit.

  • In my state its not against the law to split lanes "Delaware", but in some it is.

  • SAN DIEGO BABY!

  • chill

  • its not illegal ive followed cops cops have followed me i pass cop cars on a daily basis. in not in the manual but its not illegeal here in Cali...nice post

  • sensible policing? we don't have that where i live.

  • fuck. how did that bee get in my headphones?

  • the law says as long as the flow of traffic is not moving faster than 45 mph it is legal to white line ride or split lanes. I still think its a foolish practice. If you get hit while lane splitting, you are at fault.period. There is no recourse for you so keep that in mind.

  • @DIRTCONVERT Is it your fault with both the insurance companys and the authoritys? I split all the time while TAD in the Sandiego area and continued the practice in other states, but I was young then, and there was no such thing as a bloody cell phone. I wouldnt try it nowdays.

  • splitting lanes is not illegal in california. but it is illegal to split between the carpool lane and other lanes

  • I live for lane splitting in CA...Its the only way to get any where...If I wanted to take forever to get somewhere I would drive a car.

  • It's called White Lining.

Calif has had this in effect since 71 when I did it.

  • He wanted him to split lanes past him to get that revolting noise as far away from him as possible. The cop is not foolish, he knows that the person behind him with only 2 gears is going to stay there for the next half hour unless he waves him past. My ears are already bleeding.

  • What freeway was this? Looks familiar, maybe the 105 by Downey

  • @Irvin56220 not sure but i know its the one that goes to LAX. You can see the metro green line power lines to the left of the freeway in the vid. IDK what that freeway is called.

  • The ridiculous thing is that lane-splitting is illegal anywhere in the US. A lot of the point in having a bike in the UK is that you don't wait in traffic. I have ridden all over Europe, Asia and Russia and lane-splitting is expected - consequently drivers look out for you. You just have to do it 'responsibly' - which is a bit subjective. For some that means having the front wheel down!

  • For many of us, it's NOT the splitting lanes that bothers us, it's how many bikers go about it. I've ridden for over 30 years, and some bikers irritate me the way they split lanes at more than 30mph faster than the traffic is going. Try that past a bike cop and see what happens. I'm just sayin'...

  • @blindtoo.I would try that but the pigs are going just as fast. I have passed a car at 70 mph in the fast lane and he did nothing. Most cop bikes I follow to work everyday and they are flying with me so i'll never get the chance to pass them. Didn't you see this cop had his lights on so he was busy. If I flew past him at 60 it would be fine. We all are programmed though, so when we see one we always slow down but I just get right back on it again. I do see ppl pass where its not safe. Stupid.

  • @blindtoo LMAO i know what happens... it aint fun to run do dont try it lol and yes i have a few times not exciting at all... very very scary, you endanger peds your self and cops lol

  • For many of us, it's the splitting lanes that bothers us, it's how many bikers do it. I've ridden for over 30 years, and some bikers irritate me the way they split lanes at more than 30mph faster than the traffic is going. Try that past a bike cop and see what happens. I'm just sayin'...

  • Splitting isnt ilegal in California, though, it should be because of how bad everyone is at driving there.

  • @hockeyhotdog11 Lol no shit right? I hate drivers here in California. They suck ass.

  • @hockeyhotdog11 Nobody is bad at driving in Cali. They're all just crazy.

  • m13 said that when a bike is loud, it's because it's going fast....

Maybe he forgot about the people who seem scared of the gearbox lol =D

  • @HELPMEIDUNNOHOWTOUSE haha yea man i was sitting here like "dafuq u doin in first gear?"

  • I think y'all spend too much time in the sun. Who gives a shit about lane splitting?

  • That looks like the 105 east freeway. By Paramount.

  • Splitting lanes has NEVER been illegal in California IDIOT.

  • @ericjkent and posting a video to prove it to people that think that it is... isn't stupid and he's definitely not an idiot for doing it.. you are the idiot because you start waving your dick all over the keyboard and post stupid comments!!

  • @ericjkent splitting lanes at 35mph and lower is 100% legal in California. I've split past several chp cars and no ticket it isn't illegal.

  • woahh this rider needs to shift up a gear rofl

  • @bugz000 It's not a Harley...

  • @bugz000 not really, higher revs = more noise more noise = more chance of being heard which then means that people may actually look for him/her

  • @bugz000 they're actually taught in classes to stay in lower gears while lane splitting so people hear them coming

  • @SirWingfoot Yeah people love giving their two sense when they know absolutely everything. Guys probably never been on a bike, weights 300 lbs and was eating a twinkie while watching this video.

  • @bugz000 so the car drivers wont hear him and crash...hows your bicycle doing?

  • @varulalin my motorcycle is doing fine thankyou

  • @bugz000 if you had a motorcycle you wudve not say he needs to shift up a gear...

  • @varulalin and if you look at my channel - i have videos of me riding various bikes - my brother deals in them and i test ride them while also owning one for myself >_> foolish kid

  • @bugz000 I am being foolish trying to make you understand that you need to keep the bike in lower gears so the drivers can hear u...

  • @varulalin i understand that - i do it myself, but not to this extent - this guy is likely to burn out his gearbox from holding it so long at such high revs - the revs he's at around 0:07 is all you need

  • @bugz000 LOOL.

Burn out a Replica Race bike gearbox?

    Good luck with that.(100% SRS)

Personally though...eff lane splitting...In the era of the distracted driver...saving 10 min in traffic isnt worth your life.

  • @MikeW259 until your bike overheats. I bet a 5 min. ride on my R1 on a hot summer day in cali.and you'll be saying eff sitting in this traffic.

  • @bugz000 naw dude the bikes nowadays rev up to 18 thousand rpms b4 they red line, so it sounds bad but the engines are built to rev that high

  • While it is not legal to "split lanes" it is legal to share lanes. You can still be cited if you cross the line back and forth (changing lanes) or are driving in a wreckless manner. Understand the law, save yourself some cash.

  • @jaker277 and when did you get you M1 license? it says in the guide book that splitting lanes is legal, let me put it this way, if im sharing the right lane and all of a sudden a truck goes too far over, Im not gonna get a ticket for not running into the truck, I can cross over and continue, I Do it ALL day in Los angeles, and I broke a BRAND NEW chain in 2 months thats how often Im out on the road. cops always wave you past.

  • @Sturman422 Well I am 37 and have been M1 since 14. I have been riding in CA since 94.

    1. Never says splitting lanes. Only sharing lanes.

    2. If a truck comes over and you move out of the way then you are avoiding an accident not wreckless driving, so you would probably be fine.

    3. If you are constantly crossing back over the line to try and weave through traffic you can quite easily be cited for driving in an unsafe manner.

    4. Broken chain <2 months = novice rider.

  • sniper

  • WTF?!, won this Harley Davidson as prize but I'm a girl afraid TO ride I need to get rid of it... Click my channel for contact

  • Well, in this situation clearly its safe.

  • engine heating because of stopping in traffic? There is a thing called a radiator fan.

  • @helgih580 ... there IS a thing called an AIR COOLED engine (that overheats when stopping in traffic)

  • @tazztt1 lol, I'd never trust something like that and I even live in a cold climate. How bout an engine fan then?

  • @helgih580 ... Most pre-80 bikes and all Harleys except V-Rod and many late models. You learn to avoid overheating when you own a bike that's air-cooled. an engine fan would help but be heavy, taxing, and ugly, no needless to say, there are none. A 12v fan on an oil cooler would be helpful though.

  • @thepanzerknacker stop trolling, U know its a Impala. fyi skyline taillights sit outside of the trunk not inside. Prove me wrong buddy.

  • @modifiedtuning someone said that was a skyline? lol

  • its an chevy impala dumb asses

  • Why isn't the cop splitting lanes? They usually do

  • What did the cop even do? Give you a hand signal or something?

  • @djhuttle Did you know you can watch the video again and again as you like and see all the tiny details you want?

  • @mathieuemi666 Did you know that no one likes trolls?

  • Is this the 105 freeway? Looks to be around the end of the freeway (Downey area) where it merges with the 605.

  • its just because how much traffic there is...

  • california allows it because they specifically designed their roads to accommodate extra room for motorcycles to be able to lane split

  • Lane splitting is allowed, the problem is if you get in an accident you're the one at fault (always) because you're classified as driving wrecklessly (faster than the flow of traffic).

  • Absolutely legal in CA. Only stipulation is; 2 wheel motor driven cycle shall not exceed 10mph over the flow of traffic or travel at the maximum posted speed limit, whichever is less.

  • Impala bro..

  • I'm convinced! wtf did I just watch?

  • "Lane splitting by motorcycles is generally legal in Europe, and in Japan and several other countries, and is illegal in many U.S. states, but is considered lawful in California (see list below)."

Only illegal in CA if done dangerously or irradically. So there you go, argument settled children ;)

  • Panzer cracker it's a chevy impala numb nuts lol. Not a car guy eh? That's okay. Go back to your knitting circle ;)

  • Nissan Skyline at 0:15 :)

  • @thepanzerknacker Lol your a tard, that's a fuckin Impala lmao

  • @johnnyhotrum no its a skyline dipshit

  • @thepanzerknacker Seriously dude that is a fucking Impala. Only one tail pipe and its straight from gm, it's a fucking 4 door. ARE YOU SERIOUS??

  • @johnnyhotrum Look at the tail lights, thats a skyline no question so fuck off

  • @thepanzerknacker Have you ever seen a IMPALA they have ROUND taillights just like a skyline. SOMONE PLEASE TELL THIS MORON The car at 0:15 is a fucking impala not a skyline. Fucking troll.

  • @johnnyhotrum It is clearly a skyline. Get an education fool

  • @thepanzerknacker Dont be stupid its a impala you idiot

  • @thepanzerknacker Dont be stupid its a impala you idiot like tell me where he saw any nissan symbol or a skyline symbol xD

  • @thepanzerknacker mate i'm from australia and i don't really know wat the new impala's look like, i gather they look like the vehicle in this video though. but i can tell you it is definitely not a skyline. a skyline has both tail lights on the body, this car clearly has a light on the boot lid

  • @GS315ish Ha cheers but I realised my mistake when johny scrotum up there corrected me earlier. What can I say, cant beat a good troll on youtube :)

  • @johnnyhotrum Its cool we know more then him you can tell its a impala xD

  • @ZzilluzionzZ Right...lol

  • Why would you think that you can't lane split in Cali?

  • This is illegal in Hawaii as the lanes here are 2 feet thinner than on the mainland. Lane splitting would be more dangerous here than in CA or TX or anywhere for that matter.

  • Who gives a fuck, all soon to be donors anyway.

  • Legal yes, and personally I don't mind in slower traffic and if fact will help by making room. Warning though, when I am doing 70-80 mph on freeway, just try and split me, I WILL CUT YOU OFF AND RUN YOU OVER!!! It is my space and I own. I've done my share of blocking and had on many instances of bikers pounding on my hood. I don't care. PS Not due to me, but I've seen hamburger meet from smart asses like you splitting Big Truck and getting their asses ran over, not a pretty sight!!

  • @sfsailer7 lol WOW you purposly block riders and put people in danger because you think you own the space around your truck?? Riders have Ponded on your hood?? lol hhmmm Maybe you might have some issues it might not be all the riders that are the problem here......... I mean really?? Dont be such a dick head

  • @sfsailer7

You are a moron... plain and simple... that and a poser... you aint got the balls to cut off a biker cause you know you'd get your azz beat.

  • sounds like he is going in 210 but he is going in 20 i think :P

  • Christ! Change up a couple of gears, my ears are bleeding!

  • Q q é isso um cortador de grama????

  • Alot of close calls in this freeway... but im still good

  • Here in Miami I'm sure it's illegal but shit, the rider is probably an illegal alien anyway.

  • dude thats the 105 freeway

  • Lol what else you will do on 91 freeway by state college blvd .... damn it .

  • CA is putting a law in that will stop lane splitting. Lane splitting was allowed cause cops bikes were air cooled. now they ride liquid cooled BMW's so no reason to have lane splitting, thus they are going to get rid of it. It will be a sad day, my bike is air cooled!!

  • @Dufoth Not one word of this is true. There is no law being put in to prohibit lane splitting in CA. The assertion that it was allowed because of air-cooled bikes is also false. Urban myth. If you do it prudently and safely and less than 30mph (my opinion) and pay attention, you should be fine.

  • @Motorfuzz well my info is coming from the California Motorcycle safety Course Instructors. and yes air cool is the reason for lane splitting, cause bikes over heat!!! you need to go home and do some research.

  • @Dufoth Sorry bud, your instructors are mistaken as are you. They are assuming things. There is no law that specifically ALLOWS splitting in CA. There just isn't one that PROHIBITS it, as other posters have correctly stated. CA cops can still ticket lane splitters under CVC 22350, known as the Basic Speed Law, if the motorcyclist is going too fast for conditions, in the officer's discretion. Of course it would be a motorcop that cites for it because only we can catch up to the violator!

  • @Motorfuzz wrong

  • @Motorfuzzplease quote your source! or your comments are Urban myth! i ride in Cali. never been stopped. ive split lanes with a motorcop for like 20 min over about 30 intersections and we were both bookin it talked to him and everything. so far your lookin like the Urban myth.

  • I wish they would allow this in other states... If traffic is slow or stopped I don't see the problem with it.

  • it is legal in alot of places dude lol i didnt specify to just the u.s

  • its definitely not legal any where and that was just a cool cop

  • @derglegnartertar its legal in alot of places dude lol

  • @newportkagen really huh news to me oh wait im a motorcycle instructor for the dot so im going to have to say your wrong

  • @derglegnartertar well i would think since ur a rider u would want this to be legal it is no fun at all to be sitting in dead stop traffic in 90 degree wether in full riding gear

  • @derglegnartertar it is legal in alot of places what are u talking about lol theres alot more places than just the united states.

  • Lane splitting should be banned

  • Awesome

  • that was a pretty slow bike even though it was making all that noise.

  • very helpful thanks

  • lane splitting is normal, expected from bikers and totally legal in Europe. That is one of the reasons ppl gets bikes, to get rid of heavy traffic in the mornings by doing just that, lane splitting. Cops do too

  • there is a site that shows you CAN do lane sharing. for some reason i cant post the link here

  • i live in cali and a cop waved me past to lanesplit, there was a crash up ahead and traffic was backed up,he just waved at me to lanesplit through. i think it might be leagal at a certain speed or something, not sure

  • I heard the reason this became law, was to keep air cooled motorcycles from over heating in stop and go traffic and to stop engine damage.

  • @dobypaw people get pissed when u lane split, but they dont realize the bike get hot they dont cool like a car does even if it is liquid cooled and with all your gear and helmet on you'll be lucky to not have a heat stroke while you radiator fan is blowing all that hot air from the bike uo and around you while your sitting in traffic...so lane splitting should be at the discretion of the rider and in ca its legal and cars r not supposed to cross the double yellow line...

  • @dobypaw Ya right since when to law makers care about Motorcycles over heating.....Thats a silly rumor

  • @dobypaw Ya right since when do law makers care about Motorcycles over heating.....Thats a silly rumor

  • @NorcalFooter Since an overheated motorcycle will become disabled and cause more of a backup and a safety hazard of a vehicle on the shoulder.

  • @dobypaw Your WRONG fucking GOOGLE it dumb ass theres NO law thats says motorcycles get to lane split because they could over heat if they dont.........Dont be a duche bag i just told you that its a rumor dont beleive every dumb thing you hear.....

  • @NorcalFooter Did I say anything in my post to piss you off to have you replay like an ass? NO I DID NOT... I was replying to your post to me in a respectful manner... But, looks like you do not deserve respect...So you go google it and when you find it shove it up you ass!!! You are not man enough to show respect you will reply like an punkass...Guaranteed!!! I treat people the way they treat me. I was respectful but the second you did not show me any gloves are off. Are you a man or a punkass.

  • @dobypaw mostly on air cooled engines like Harley-davidson and customs coppers bikes but still on street bike they do have fans on rads but can still over heat.

  • @pantherxx010 Yes I know i own a Buell firebolt.

  • @dobypaw well god be with someone that opens a door on me when I get up off the ground

  • @dobypaw: You are correct. It is perfectly legal to "lane split".

  • Finally! one law that California actually got right!

  • Not sure why you can't do this in TX. I thought the only reason you could do it in CA is because there was no law on the number of vehicles in a lane. So the law doesn't specifically say you CAN do it, it just doesn't say you CAN'T do it, and everyone gravitates towards the most efficient driving. I wonder if TX code is the same, but people are just afraid to try it because the police will ticket them.

  • @muchadoaboutnoting The relevant TX laws are the same as CA - technically it is legal to lane split but it is my understand it is not an accepted practice and police will ticket for it. What needs to happen is people need to fight those tickets and win and then sue the PD to get a court ruling that it is permissible.

TX was close to passing a law specifically allowing lane splitting, but it was full of conditions. Conditions are bad! The safest lane splitting is done at the riders discretion

  • @mxracer95x I get it. I also read up on it and Wikipedia basically says the same thing, and that many states don't have laws prohibiting it, but they use other laws to fight it, like having to have a blinker on for 100 ft when changing lanes.

A co-worker from NY was visiting me in CA, and when someone passed us splitting in traffic, she asked "don't you ever want to open your door on them". I asked "why the h*ll would you want to be mean?" Some people just don't like it when others benefit.

  • @mxracer95x It would seem that one way to fight it is by observing highway motorcycle patrols, and if they're riding side by side, then this might set a precedent...although they wouldn't be passing anyone. I've seen some staggered, but to me it's all the same...you're driving in close proximity to another vehicle.

Some peoples attitude about it (car drivers) astounds me. Some people feel that "he's getting ahead of me and that's not fair"...lame.

  • @mxracer95x Same in Missouri, but I know both Illinois and Kansas have specific laws against lanesplitting/lanesharing. Illinois and Kansas also have no helmet law, so I don't think they make their laws based on motorcycle safety...

Missouri has all these gray areas about passing on the right, overtaking, etc... It really reads like lanesharing should be allowed. I do it at lights to get away from the texters (no law against cell phones here).

  • @mxracer95x Unfortunately some riders don't use discretion. Not you mx, it appears that you are going at a safe speed, no more than 15mph or so faster than traffic around you, and probably not more than 25-30 overall. There isn't a law that PERMITS lane splitting in CA, but there also isn't one that PROHIBITS it either.

I've seen riders bust thru slow traffic at +30mph faster than traffic around them and at speeds of 60 or more. That is just pure stupidity.

  • @mxracer95x riders discretion has resulted in 3 idiots in the hospital getting stitches in their heads because they rode their happy asses right in the mirror of my stationary truck. not all riders are retards, but the minority that are happen to be loud enough about it to give you all a bad name

  • @cummins24421 Funny, that can apply to republicans, religious people or just about any group in the history of man

  • @mxracer95x no laws state that you CAN do anything, laws can only prohibit.

  • @mxracer95x Serious question. Why do you want the right to do something the is obviously unsafe? Safe driving should be paramount to a person who rides.

  • @Ryantravisaol The only unsafe part is people who change lanes without looking first.

Currently, there’s no federal law in place when it comes to lane splitting, but the Department of Transportation, has posted a stance: “Although lane splitting is allowed in just a few areas of the United States, notably California, it appears to be worthy of further study because it offers a means of reducing congestion in addition to possible safety benefits. It is widely used in many other countries.”

  • @muchadoaboutnoting . The Ca motorcycle handbook does talk specifically about this under "lane Sharing" they note "Lane Sharing is not safe." I am sure if it were illegal, they would state that. My guess, is it won't be long and it will be. I am a new rider in CA, just studied the book and took the safety course. They will not ticked for it in Ca. Out bike shopping soon. Need another fun factor in my life and gas is just way too expensive anymore. Looking forward to some long and epic rides.

  • @outbounder888 its not going to change, and if it does everyone will continue to lane split. even officers who are unaware of the law change. a lot more common then youd think

  • @muchadoaboutnoting didnt mean to vote down...

  • @muchadoaboutnoting Lots of states don't have laws forbidding it, but police will ticket based on other things like turn signal and passing laws. California is the only state that officially states that it is legal.

  • @scattam It's silly. TX is that way, and they have no idea what it takes to make traffic move and that it won't slow anyone else down to let bikes lane split. It's like a lot of the drivers have this attitude that if they aren't going fast, you shouldn't be able to either. When 2 lanes merge, there are drivers that will pull over and block one lane if it's empty, simply because they don't think it's fair you get ahead. For me, it's a lane and you should use it til it ends.

  • @muchadoaboutnoting

If I recall correctly, it was made legal to lane split because motorcycles would over heat just sitting in traffic in hot weather. (Majority of motorcycles are air cooled) It was down to the combination of weather and traffic in California.

  • @muchadoaboutnoting YES, IN CALIFORNIA ITS LEGAL TO SPLIT LANES AS LONG AS YOU DONT EXCEED 10 MPH FASTER THEN THE TRAFFIC MOVING, AND OBVIOUSLY YOU CANT SPLIT LANES OVER THE SPEED LIMIT, YOU WOULD GET A SPEEDING TICKET

  • @muchadoaboutnoting I see this all the time in houston, and I mean "All the time"! So I dont know the legality of it, but if it is illegal, 90% of motorcyclist break the law...

  • @muchadoaboutnoting I see this all the time in houston, and I mean "All the time"! So I dont know the legality of it, but if it is illegal, 90% of motorcyclist break the law... ( and I mean splitting lanes not riding past a cop)

  • stupid australia and its shitty unthought laws. maybe when there's no oil left in the world, motorbikes will be considered as good as they really are.
