All the flat-looking areas exist in 3d space, but the camera has 'orthographic' checked. The human in the game is represented on a pane and the pane moves in front of a block. The block, which is normally invisible, is responsible for collision detection and physics. All the flowers are on invisible panes as well. Some are nearer to the camera than the player, so the player passes behind them.
