  • My Iphone iV is the same shit. Its allready replaced by the local apple shop. But I loose about 60% of all calls. Very anoying.. rotten apples!

  • My phone does the same thing. I'm returning it this week.

  • i thought flip cams were suppose to be extreme HD according to there comercials,, iphone 4 is a piece of shit

  • Boooring

  • Hey, everyone calm down. This isn't such a huge problem. Just put on a bumper, and problem solved. The bumper insulates the antenna from your hand, preventing interference. Since bumpers are currently sold out, you can just put some tape around the antenna until they are available. But if you really want to give up all the cool new features of the iphone 4 like HD video, you have 30 days to return it.

  • Now they want you to stand in line to buy a rubber band for $30 that will fix it. The arrogance of this company never fails to astound me.

  • If the humidity is low you will not get this problem as human skin becomes a poor conductor in low humidity. It is impossible to fix this problem with software, it is a physical property of the antenna. It was a terrible design choice to expose them at all.

  • well since your hands have pores and they sweat it kind of defeats what you are trying to say.

  • @ratspider2000

I am guessing that your High School does not have a physics program.

  • @riluve I know exactly what you are saying to be fact but your sweat is conductive, and holding a phone for a while will cause your hands to sweat.

  • @ratspider2000 Not exactly what I am saying. Sweat is only single a component of what I am saying. Basically though:

    dry hand= isolator.

Moist or wet hand = conductor.

It could be hand lotion that makes the difference, not any sweat. The local weather conditions are a big factor as well. If you "knew" these things, then it would have been foolish to make your previous comment at all.

  • @riluve dry skin is a poor conductor but is still conductive and is not an isolator. and when holding the phone in say... idk a phone call for a while, your hand will sweat and become an even greater conductor. now im sure the humidity levels in everyones house on youtube that owns a iphone 4 with this problem are outrageously high..... (sarcasm)..... so how about you stop trying to be Mr. Physics teacher and shut the hell up?

  • @ratspider2000 you should not let your sexual frustration get you so worked up. As it happens, anyone working with sensitive electronic equipment could explain this to you, so its not a matter of being a physics teacher. It is simply the matter of not being a dolt.

  • @riluve I am not worked up, there would have been a lot of capitals and a lot of exclamation points. now go crawl back into your cave and worship apple.

  • @ratspider2000 LMAO - you dumb as shit - I aint done nothn' but bust on apple for having such a dipshit design.

  • @riluve well at least we agree on one thing...... anyway im done with this argument or w/e it is. got my evo today too excited to fight...

  • Well theirs nothing wrong with mine........no matter how I hold the phone, even with two hands completely smothering the metal strip around the outside, I still cant make the signal change.......I have held the phone exactly as the guy in the video, and still no change.......The iphone 4 has no issues at all for me, and its awesome

  • hey! HAVE YOU NOTICED A BETTER BATERY LIFE OR ITS JUST THE SAME THING??

    BYE

  • Your iphone 4 doesn't get reception by touching it? Don't worry. There's an app for tha... oh, nevermind.

  • That really sucks! Was Apple expecting people not to hold the phone? I'm waiting til the bugs get fixed before I get a new iphone. Hope your issue gets resolved...

  • @shany2132 Good explanation. The only ECE I learned was during physics, so that was just my best guess as to what was happening.

  • After seeing videos like this i tried it with my 1st generation iphone and it actually has the same problem. Just not to the extent that the 4th generation has.

  • you know... I'm seeing a lot of people saying "apple fails"... but... the true fails... are the morons who pre-ordered iphone 4 or stood in lines for hours or days just to buy it first... those people are the real FAILS and morons...

  • i-fail! they rushed it!

  • FAAAAIIIILLL

  • you don't need a better camera we see. laughing my ass off! GO SPRINT EVO! hahaha!!!!!!!!!!!

  • go to my page and check it out, both iPhone 4 and 3GS lose reception. but the iphone 4 only takes ONE FINGER

  • They intentionaly did that. Good reception is a feature that will be in the next iphone 4HD GS with also bluethooth send feature. Yea Go Apple.

  • @Qabz rofl

  • what about putting those rubber cases around ... does that help?

  • absolutely true, just tried it on my iphone, it is 100% reproducible! SHIT!!! I paid lots of money for this!

  • I would love to see HITLERS REACTION TO IPHONE`s DEATH GRIP. Actually could some one make that video to entertain us please?

  • @simran619 Awesome idea.

  • faiiiiiiiiiiiil

  • They found a solution! It's something called a "bumper" and you can buy this fix for 29 dollars at any local apple store

  • @xphacter

so they are charging you to fix their flaws... wow?

  • @Pher0cious No they said, stop holding the phone in that way. please google and you will find many blogs on what Steve Jobs sais which is serious BS

  • well im better off getting the Driod X then, cause apple sure lives up to its name

  • Hahhaaaa....Jobs says its a non issue though. Its YOUR fault for holding the phone that way. He spent ten minutes in the keynote speach bragging about the beautiful glass and stainless steel....now he wants you to spend another thirty bucks to cover it with an ugly rubber bumper which makes the phone thicker. Oh yeah, he bragged about how thin it was too. So now its uglier and thicker than all other phones out there. Screw Apple....I wanted one, but not now.

  • This isn't good.

I have an iPhone 2G and it haves almost 5 bars.

  • yea at least you get some sort of fucking reception I HAVE NONE AND IM ON A FUCKING 2 YEAR CONTRACT

  • whahahahahahahhahah fucked up for u iphone upgraders lol you cant do shit about it its the structure of the disign you cant solve it whit some firmware of software lol

  • This is a hardware problem. Can not be fixed without redesign the phone,so Steve find the "smart" solution: cheap ruber bumpers for this "out of this planet" phone. " Hey,Steve we are not stupid. Give us the money back.We dont have to pay for you to experiment new phones.

  • Haha oh dear.

Makes you think -- Did they not test the phone ?

  • you would think they would test the phone before they release it. still I'm going to end up buying one, but I'm really disappointed.

  • It might be a QC problem? I just got the iPhone 4 and I DO NOT have this problem. A few friends and family also just got the iphone 4 they also DO NOT have this problem even gripping the phone with two hands on the side.

  • They purposely designed the phone in such a way that signal drops wen u hold the antenna , so that they could sell the rubber bumper cases...................... greedy Apple

  • i got my iphone 4. then i tried opening the box while walking down the street, i dropped it then it got ran over by a car check out the video of it

  • Hey that's just iPhone's new feature called: iHands-free

  • try doing it with wifi shut off... when I shut off wifi it does not matter how I hold it... I know thats the antenna on the left side...

  • highly doubt its just a software issue....

  • I believe apple's "bumper" case fixes this problem.

  • What is great dude, if you won't be able to make calls? This is f--ing phone! :))

  • The bumper will fix it. I also think Apple should give it free as they knew about the antenna problem before and is why they were announcing the bumper at the sametime as the iPhone 4 at E3. Apple wants you to pay $30 extra for their device to work!

  • hahahhahahahaha, now the even the "face time" will not be possible... crappy technology!!!!

  • Having an antenna that is touchable will degrade the signal that the phone is supposed to receive. I believe that this is due to an antenna having to be a certain length to receive certain signals. When you hold the phone (antenna) you are changing the antenna's properties (making it wider or longer). Good job ryanedwintaylor, in the other video i saw the guy said it would degrade if you tilted the phone. It is when you are holding it.

  • @frenchh8err I think it's because when people touch the antenna, human body will change the impedance of the antenna (like capacitive loading), or current (which is very small, not dangerous at all) is flowing to your hand. In whatever way, the antenna performance will degrade. I thought apple antenna engineer should have considered about this issue, and put some dielectric materials on the surface of metal frame (which I think will improve the issue to some extent)

  • im glad i havnt got one yet

  • ill stick with HTC EVO

  • i'm having the same issue although the problem does go away if you put on the bumper

  • this is bull do you guys really think apple would release a device that loses signal by touching it and also this isnt plausible mainly because a human cant cause interfereence between antenas

ps you may have notices that all other videos like this have comments disabled so people cannot enlighten the stupid ones who believe this

  • @NickNackNation What do you mean the people who believe this? I have one of the phones right in front of me and it is doing it...

  • @LINYJumper then how come when i went and used a display model at the apple store it worked perfectly fone and hpw cpme there are hundreds of videos on youtube of people useing the phone

  • @NickNackNation Because this problem does not affect ALL of the phones. There was a manufacturing problem on large number of them and that is what caused this.

  • my friends new iphone 4 does tht too!

  • This is why I will never buy an apple product. They're a rip off.

  • @Azlaier or you can't afford it, faggot

  • @bostonxbox121 Wow, there's no need to get all riled up. Money isn't an issue, I can assure you that. And while I am gay, I don't appreciate your need to call me names.

    You're very immature, bigot.

Apple products are a rip off. That's all there is to it.

  • What was Apple's final verdict?

  • is that how you suppose to hold the phone??

  • sucks for you, my iphone 4 doesn't do this

  • offcoarse theres an issue... ur not supposed to hold it nor make phone calls with it !!

    everybody knows that right???

  • Apple has brainwashed everyone into thinking everything they release is awesome. Good for them, bad for you. So far I have seen some one break the "way durable new screen" after 4 waist level drops. The reception issue with Att is bad as is, add this antena problem and your in a world of hurt. And all for what? Video chat in wifi only. Att has been able to do one way confrencing for years.

  • @geezmaynard Mine hasn't dropped a single call all day. Concerning the broken glass there's a simple solution: TAKE CARE OF YOUR $600 PHONE. And video calling casts extra on other networks, and AT&T said it will be over 3g before the end of the year for free.

  • Looks like a recall in the forcast :)

  • Guess I'll be waiting for the iPhone 4GS to come out ... Unbelievable !

  • no one told you to be left handed :p

  • The question is not will the bars but does it actually drop calls

  • 3gs 4 the win iphone 4 fucking fails they decreased the signal 4 all the extra additives like video calling pathetic. get pwned by apples retared genetics!

  • ima wait till they fix this problem.. and then buy it.

  • get your camare to fokus!!!!!

  • i will buy it soon :( Do you advice me to buy iphone 4 now?

  • lol In spite of all the hype that Apple made around this phone, it has THIS big of a flaw!?

Alright, I'm an Apple fanboy, raised on Macs my whole life, but a problem like this makes me wonder if they tested this thing at all! xD

And don't worry about the quality of your camera, dude. We still can tell the bars are going up and down.

  • @velcroboy60000 They tested it, but if you remember in the gizmodo article, they were in a 3gs case to disguise it which prevents this from happening, plus it only happens when you hold it a weird way. I have to try to get mine to do it, it doesn't do it when i'm using it normally.

  • @taypuc31 Well, it looks like if you're a lefty, you're kind of screwed.

  • remove that headphone cable first dude

  • I got the same thing to happen on the 3GS however I had to claw my hand around the device to block off signal. When I held the phone normally I had no loss of bars. Bars would drop from 5 to 2 when I did this. I never noticed this happening on iOS 3. I am guessing it could be either a software issue or a defective unit.

  • I'm waiting 2nd batch.

  • Am going to wait for two months before i get one

  • Would a bumper solve it? Or would that have the same effect?

  • Comment removed

  • Do you really hold the phone like that when you make calls?

  • @gwilmeth I'm sure it would have the same effect if you are holding it like you would normally when you are on the phone.

  • @ryanedwintaylor

I honestly had not realized that.

  • thx. I will tweet to the masses as well

  • Not news, Mossberg noticed this in his review. He said it doesn't affect the ability to make calls, just a software issue.

  • @summus it actually does affect the quality of the phone call. i was on the phone with apple running through these tests and they could tell when I was holding the phone and when I wasn't... simply by the quality of the phone call.

  • @summus How could this be a software issue? Every single video shows you that when you touch those side your signal goes down! Houston we have a problem!!! Not everyone wants a $30 bumper case to go on there phone and we havent even confirmed that thats a fix for it.

  • @Ronenic It is a software issue, the 3GS is doing the same thing with iOS 4.

  • @summus Incorrect. I have been testing this solidly for 30 min. and I drop the call I am on when I begin to hold the phone in my left hand. The phone call will not drop if I lay it on the table and use the speaker phone option. Reception goes all the way down to "Searching..." when holding and will eventually drop the call you are on.

  • @summus its the wifi shut it off and watch what happens...

  • Im pretty sure that apple would have picked up on this "huge flaw" when they were both designing the phone or testing it. I actually had many phones when i didnt hold it magically get more reception. Im pretty sure its some thing that switches b/w edge or 3g or just a display problem, I doubt that the problem would Be that drastic even if it did loss some bars!

  • Video quality is fine try to focus better. Thanks for the info !

  • This does not fill me with too much hope for the moment :P

    I shall tweet this video!
