@joeski8 That was in the super nintendo port, which lacked blood and had the fatalities for Kano, Raiden, Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero altered. Raiden just electrocuted the enemy until they turned into dust, Cage kicked his opponent, Kano's fatality was changed to a punch in the chest without anything pulled out, and Sub-Zero's was changed to the freeze and punch you mentioned. That fatality did appear in MK2, which hit a few months after the home ports of the first game.

@Archzenom Its not necessarily a fail as in the first MK, Liu Kang was a Shaolin monk and they believe that violence is not always the answer so they do not kill. However, in MK2 onwards, he abandoned the shaolin way and became a rebel, thus him being able to actually KILL people.
