But my wife is german and have had several discussions about german history and I had the same objections like you. I eventualy had to agree that some things are better left as very dark, grim and shamefull pages of human history. Combine that with the human ability to forget about the past... Sounds reasonable enough crowd-controlling the humorous side (if any) of the WWII.
