MLRS fires two kinds of munitions. One is a short range ballistic missile of the range you speak of. So technically, it's not a rocket but a guided missile. And the MLRS can carry only 2 of them. The 12 rockets that it carries has a range like most other rocket launchers. Besides, it's about acquiring a target at that range first.

the U.S MLRS was designed in 1977 so what do you expect? lol. anyway, saying the MLRS has a max range of 32km is simply FALSE, the MLRS ammunition is what gives it its range and it can fire a new missile, PARS SAGE-227 F (new in the sense of latest) which can easily reach a max range of 70-75km!!!! thats almost twice as far as the Pinaka!!!! that being said the unit cost is pretty amazing (pinaka) concidering its specifications. More deadly than the MLRS? I think that statement should be revised

PINAKA can also shoot in salvo mode btw. And the M270 can shoot rockets at 42 kms, only guided missiles have the 300km range. Besides they are diff classes. India uses SMERCH for longer range which will soon be replaced by the next version of the pinaka, which will have 120km range and 300mm projectiles in the league of smerch and M270 MLRS. Pinaka is still cheaper, lighter and more accurate though(it uses an trajectory correction system even in the unguided projectiles).

Yes it is BM 21 as its chasis is considerably smaller and of older vintage than the Pinaka. Nevertheless India has modernised its Bm21 by using newer rockets and fire control systems.
