  • Wow, this brought back memories. I remember going over this bridge when I was a kid and the old man was heading up to our property in Pasco County. It seemed like it took them forever to fix the bridge. It was pretty amazing to see the bridge just laying there collapsed in the water.

  • I remember this, I was around 10 and had just visited Tarpon Springs with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousin. Thanks for sharing it. I tend to agree with a previous comment on the music. Although it is nice music, I just don't think it goes well with images of a bridge collapse where someone was killed. The music is just a little too light-hearted and fanciful for a disaster film. I fine piece I think would go well is the Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem Mass in D. Hauntingly beautiful, yet somber.

  • I grew up in Tarpon and was 4 years old when this happened. Don't remember it at all. Never heard my parents talk about it over the years, either. Even when the Skyway fell, it was never mentioned. This video was my first knowledge of it. Crazy!! Of course, that part of US 19 was concidered the way out of town back then.

  • BTW nice video!

  • Thx, Pappass' is closed now. My former mother in law worked there for a couple decades. Developers want to tear the building down and build a multi story hotel complex!

  • In my younger years I used to take my boston whaler under this bridge all the time. I lived on a boat across the river from the sponge docks on ALT. 19.. Actually directly across from the old pappas place. What happened to louis pappas?

  • Louis Pappas was the original owner of Pappas' Restaurant. It was located where Ellas Bakery now operates. Louis left the restaurant to his children, who gave it to the grandchildren. Louis' sons built the NEW place next to the bridge on ALT 19. Not the bridge in this video. Grandson & namesake Louis Pappas took over when his cousins didn't want to be involved. Later he sold it to a 'company' who got closed down for various reason and rumors. Quite a loss for Tarpon and its history.

  • Where is this collapsed bridge in relation to the alt 19 bridge next to pappas? I boat in this area all the time...pass under the us 19, lat 19..and one other bridge.

  • This was the US 19 Bridge over the Anclote River. Just north of KMart Plaza but south of

B21 and St Lukes' Eye clinic.

  • doesn't look too bad. How bad really was it?

  • Were there any injuries or casualties, from the collapse?

  • Yes

  • If I recall correctly, there was 1 fatality and several injuries. At least 2 cars were in the water and 1 or 2 were still on the inclined portion of the bridge.

I arrived at the scene a few minutes after the collapse and before the ambulances etc arrived. Assisted Tarpon Springs PD with rescue.

A woman, whose name I can't recall had entered the water and was holding one of the injured victims until we could get a rope to them. She was the hero of the day.

  • why the music?? I been on US19 before..I don't remember the river though.

  • kinda thought the music was revelant to the video, anyway makes it easier to watch. The river has been there a long time, same river that passes the sponge docks. Both sides have been redone, I hope. I drive trucks for a living, big heavy trucks. Thx for watching and commenting.
