he is not being cruel at all the degu is being posessive over his toy, mine do that to each other when they are eating. it is also impossible for a degu to open its mouth wide enough to bite a finger off even when its yawning that doesnt happen.

Hi! Can degus live alone? I've noticed a lot of people have 2 of them, would they be able to live alone in their cage? Also, do they get along with birds? It would never come into contact with my parakeet, just be in the same room. I heard guinea pigs and parakeets get along really well because they like to sing to each other and neither can harm each other intentially. Is that true for a degus??

I agree, I don't think its cruel. At the end of the day a degu would react the same if another degu was there, in fact my two do the same thing to each other!! They get annoyed easily and the fact that he doesn't get bitten shows its not too serious. Its just playing!!

It's not cruel.. Degus are slightly possessive and get irritated easily. The word "cruel" is used way too freely; cruel would be taking the ball away and not giving it back, cruel would be hitting the degu etc etc.

Our degus started acting strange 3 weeks ago, & became more & more aggressive, prowling around the house after dark. We woke up one night to our cat yowling. When we found her she she had been hunted down & killed by the degus. Now all our bedroom doors locked at night, & we keep pepper spray by our bedside. We can hear them moving around the house, knocking things over & making those angry vocal sounds that degus make. We just lie still & pray for daylight to arrive.

I don't see any harm or torment in that. The degu is merely territorial and annoyed, but I don't see that it's in pain and agony.
