I think another thing that makes knopfler as fantastic as he is, is the fact that he is tremendously versatile! He doesn't have just one sound and incorporate it into all his songs like you hear with others. He was willing to play and experiment, which takes a lot of guts.

This song did just that, there is no one that comes close to Mark, the killers did a average cover, but I'm glad they did it, will bring to light the fact that all these modern bands that you teenage punks "idol" the fact that they get there influence from when the real music makers were around
