If the border patrole wants to find guns going to Mexico they should have talked to ATF and asked how many guns were they allowing smugglers to transport today and where the crossing. This whole program is about US gun control by manufactoring an emergency in Mexico and pushing for more gun control in the US. ATF allowed 2500 guns to go to Mexico as agents and gun shops were ordered to do nothing. This is from the Justice Department in DC.

Only a very small minority of Mexican Army weapons come from the U.S. The Mexican Army manufactures their own rifles and they aren't American they are German G3 standard issue rifles whereas the great bulk of confiscated weapons are AR-15 (M-16) and AK rifles. Mexico does NOT use AK's at all, the Bulk of Mexican weapons are German and Italian design.

@camau79 have you ever bought a gun from the gun shows? almost none of them are independant salesmen.. they belong to gunshops.. they do the full background check before you are able to buy one, all of the yellowsheets, it really IS a hassle to aquire a gun legally. most of the guns you see in mexico, are stolen and sold on the street, or sold in the newspaper.

You don't really think they are going to pay $1000 for a US gun when they can get a fully auto for a fraction of that price elsewhere?

@shananagans5 The Mexican army uses the standard issue HK G3 rifle. In the arsenals of Cartels they always carry AKs and M-16's which are very easy to get in any U.S. gun shop. Contrary to this misinformation the great majority of Cartel weapons are semi-auto Ak or AR-15 rifles. Rocket launchers and grenades are not that common. Also the ammunition for such rifles is illegal in Mexico so the only place to really purchase it is the U.S. $1000 is chump change to a milti-billion dollar business.
