After all the screaming and tears are over you then have a great way to control your kids when they screw around. If they're bad tell them that the movie was real and you know a psycho who owns the torture chamber from the Dark Crystal. They'll behave themselves from then on.

The Dark Crystal emulator begins to glow red when its ready and he pulls up shade and the beam begins to drain the podling.

SkekTek is much scarier in this version. He actually doesnt seem to CARE at all about the pain he's causing. He doesnt reassure or deem it necessary to calm the Podling. He just treats the poor thing as an object.

Personally I don't think the individual himself matters. Regardless of whether skekTek talks or not, what should be scary is the ACT of draining someone's life-essence.

Furthermore I think skekTek's dialogue was added mostly to make it clear to the audience WTF was going on. Granted this lessens the horror somewhat.
