  • Actually guys if you are using a compact fluorescent never touch it with your hands the oils and fingerprints will significantly reduce the bulbs lifetime.

  • @08wallic never knew that, i heard that about the halogen and hid car lights but not indoor CF lights i have some that are like 2 or 3 years old now so i dont know?

  • i give natural sunlight to my turtle that is ok right?

  • yes most love full sunshine but if it shines thru glass, plexi-glass or screened in windows most of the uvb is blocked so then they need to either go outside for full sunshine everyday with a place for shade so they dont overheat or indoors they should have a megaray uvb light u can get from reptileuv, com they make the best longest lasting uvb lights

  • does heating lamp waste electricity?

  • not if the heat is needed by the ig but usually if the basking spots are the right temp they are warm enuff but it also depends on if the cage is made of screen cause then the room its in needs to be warmer, just make sure the ig can't touch anything hot, a megaray heat projector is more efficeint and safer you can check it out on reptileuv, com

  • wheres the best place to get the uvb light?

  • like it says reptileuv, com thats the site for everything

  • Can i get a 75 watt mega ray bulb for my baby painted turtles?

  • nope but you can get a 60 watt EB megaray or the 100 watt SB they put out about the same uvb only the 100 watt puts out alittle more heat but the 60 watt can last about 2 years before needing to be replaced and when it does you only replace the bulb for $35 and reuse the ballast box so u save money with the longer lasting bulb during its lifetime and then later u save more only replacing the bulb :)

  • i got a question...

i bought a 5.0 uvb light from my local petstore

do you think it also works well...

or i rather have to get the mega ray...

  • the zoomed 5.0 is still made in germany so other then the megaray its the only good quality reptile light out there but as we have found in the last couple years its way to dim for iguanas & they are made to only last 3 months or less so for the money & health of reptiles nothing comes close to using megaray combo lighting the 5.0 has 650 lux, megaray combo lighting can have up to 100,000 lux so its much brighter that boosts their immune system & much more UVB at distance + they last 1- 3 yrs

  • how much does the mega ray combo cost...

and ive been giving my iguana natural sunlight for the past weeks just tell i get his megaray...and thanx for telling me the difference of both lights...

  • well it depends on which one you get the cheaper 100 watt SB megaray that can last a year to 18 months or the 60 watt EB megaray that can last about 2-3 years, get one of them, 2 of their long tube fluorescent bulbs the lenth of your set up & 1 or 2 of their halogen lights to use for more light, color & heat. check them out on reptileuv, com just pick what u want and add to the cart to see how much it will come too, all his lights are matched to work the best together

  • Hey,

Does the megaray setup have a big impact on the electric bill? I just had to pay my electric and it was about $70-$80 more than normal and I'm wondering if all of that came from my megaray lights? I live with other people who split this electic bill so I need to know the truth, Thanks!

  • ...i have a 100 watt uvb, a 26 watt flourescent and 60 watt halogen running during the day and a 75 watt black light (emits a minor purple glow) running at night

  • u dont want to use a black light they put out TONS of UVA too much for their eyes in an enclosure and not at night u want no lights on at night if u need heat get a heat projector instead, also to save money change all the house lights to CF & put all ur TVs,dvd & other stuff on power strips & turn the power off to them when your not using them cause tvs & things are on & use more power when "off" all day then when u use them so cut the power to them i saved 500,000 watts a year doing that

  • well look on the bill and see how much they charge you per kilowatt and check to see if they have gone up on your rates lately too, but your only running 186 watts per day thats not a whole lot big tvs can use that much or more. a toaster oven or mircowave can use 1000 to 1500 watts when they are on but you have to add up the hours ur lights are on. i think ours is 6.5 cents per kilowatt some places are more then 10 cents per kilowatt

  • also call ur power co. they may have a program to give away CF lights to people to use in their homes or can sell them to u real cheap

  • Thanks for the info on the black light, i had no idea! My whole place is flourescents, it must just be the summer, its like 95 or more in Florida every day. I was doin some research and found that the electric companys usually raise their rates in the summer too bcuz thier resources to provide electricity are spread so thin during this time. Gotta love monopolies!

  • yea and they charge more during the day too when demand is higher, ofcourse if you had a nice big outdoor cage he could sun in that also had a shaded area so he didn't over heat you can keep ur lights off a couple hours a day and if your ig gets a couple hours of unfiltered sunshine everyday or every other day then you can save the megaray for days when they can't go out or for winter time, u might notice on days they go out for a long time they would reather lay under their halogen more inside

  • cause they have gotten enuff uvb from the sun, also in the summer i leave their windows open for the heat and humidity from outside and keep the bedroom doors closed to keep the AC out, it cuts costs by not having to cool the 2 bedrooms the igs are in cause they dont like AC anyways

  • when he/she is bigger, he'll get his own room or an nice outside cage. *only the best of course ;). I saw your backyard pond in one of your vids (think woody was in it) and thought that was pretty cool. just a baby now, but growing like a weed! ive had him two months now and he's 18 in (head to tail), and is always walking around with a huge belly!

  • thats good, yea i shair the bedroom with Binty but Gizmo & Woody have their own room cause Binty doesn't want either of them in his room. yea i built the pond cause i wanted one but all the igs love to sit around it and sometime swim in it or if they get scared they drive in to the bottom but i do have to test them once a year for parasites cause birds and fish are in it & they can have parasites i used to have afew rescued turtles in there too so they could have reptile parasites too

  • how far should you put the basking light in a 40gal tank? thanks for all your help by the way.

  • its hard to say you will just have to take the ig out and put the light on top and measure the basking temp after 5 min. and move it up or down or use a different wattage until you get it around 98 degrees depending on screening and wattage of bulb.

  • what type of dome fixture are u using and where did u buy it?

  • its called a brooder light and i get them at lowes for like $11 they are good for 250 watts

  • I NEED HELP!!!Quickly!!!watch my video about Jack...

  • Third,he is shedding his skin,so does he need baths or more moisture in the terrarium?I think iguanas act in a similar way,so can you reply soon, please?

  • not sure if they need baths they may get enuff moisture from their food, they might drink alittle and just rub on things to shed, keep researching online to find out more so you can care for him right and he will get used to you after a while

  • Comment removed

  • thanks

  • Hey,remember me?I wanted to buy an iggi, but seems it just won't happen...My parents say it grows too big...so I bought a red headed agama - a male, and even if it's not an iguana,I would like to ask some questions:First, why is he bobing his head up-down and jumping around the terarium?second,How can I tame him? He's so scared of my hand he turns around everything in the terrarium...the crickets escape, the plants are everywhere and the water is full of sand... I bought him 2 days ago,so what to do?

  • hi, well i'm not sure they are very different then iguanas i've only seen one thing on them & they lived near water and ate flies but lived in the cracks in rocks & were very active secretive lizards, they dont need alot of humidity but need things to climb on, bask on and hide in. like any lizard it will just take time for them to get used to u & being held, i think you would care for them like a BD mostly but look around & read many sites on them

  • 1:33 :p you sounded funny ;p soory awsome video thanks a million!!!!!!!!

that helped me so much 5/5

  • great! the more we can get out of our lights the better to save money and be safer too

  • well as always the bigger the better, main thing is 2 levels one for basking and one for if they have to poop but its needs one side in sun and one side covered for shade afew feet off the ground so they feel safer. if they will be out without you u can use chicken wire on the outside to keep out other animals but only if u use safe plastic screening on the inside so they can't get their head caught in the chicken wire and choke or cut a toe off on it the screening inside will protect them

  • In the summer and Spring if I take my iguana outside for like at least an hour a day in the sun do I still need to leave it's uv lights on when I bring it back in its cage? I will leave them on all day in the winter but what about when I give it natural sun for like an hour a day?

  • well that does help nothing is as good then real sunshine & we used to think an hour was enuff but with new research its not if he got outside everyday for an hour or so in full sun with the option of a shaded part when he could regulate his body temps it would be ok but their needs change from day to day so i still use my uvb lights everyday uless they have been out for 3 to 5 hours sunning then i dont bother if they come in and are not under it

  • but i still use the combo lighting everyday so they can still see in color cause it would give me a headache or i wouldn't be in a good mood if everytime i came inside i couldn't see right and colors got all messed up

  • well I was kinda thinking of hopefully if I tame it well enough I'd take it out in my backyard where we could just tan in the sun in the pool area or maybe I'll build a small outdoor cage so when I want to go swimming he/she can be outside getting real sun. Hey do u know if the chlorine in the pool is bad for an ig to swim in? my instinctive guess is yes obviously but maybe it's not?

  • yea get ur ig used to a leash or like u say use a big outdoor cage with a sunny part and a shade part, they do love to swim and might want to go in the pool its not the best thing for them but we seen afew walk all the way across the bottom on one afew times at a p-IG-nic with our volunteers just wash them off with tap water when they get out but also watch out they might use it as a really big toilet too! lol so dont let the tiny babe ruth bar floating in there hit u in the head! LMAO

  • lol wouldn't that be something... I'm probably not going to deliberately let it swim in the pool anyway I was just asking in case it ran towards it one day and started swimming or something like that. I'll start building an outdoor cage for it soon though. How big do u think it should be? It's not it's permanent cage just a cage it will use a few hours a day in the summer outside on hot days.

  • wow one of the pet store employees told me that there were two different types of green iguanas. one has blue speckles on it's head and the other ones are just plain green. he had some certain name for the blue speckled one which he probably made up. i've never heard of this, and the dots were very small. he said most iguanas dull in color as they age but the other ones stay brighter and the blue dots might even spread down their neck. do u know anything about this or is it just a lie?

  • lol no theres only "iguana iguana" also called the green iguana now there is the fiji iguana but its a completely different smaller iguana now depending on where a green ig comes from they do have diff colors, like Binty i think hes from mexico cause he has more brown in him, some have blue on their heads they used to try & call them blue diamond igs or some BS just to try to make it sound fancy, check out green iguana on wiki it has info on how they look diff based on where their from

  • so theres different types of iguanas spiny tails, fiji, marine but they are not green igs & green igs can be and stay bright green, or have blue heads, or alot of spots all over but no real stripes or only stripes, they can be more brown more orange & some have 3 spikes on top of their nose while some dont & these can be clues to where ur ig comes from but now a days they can have traites of igs from 2 diff areas cause ig farms could mix them it might be why we think we see more problem igs too

  • lol ok i was checking. i didnt believe him in the first place anyway.

  • i cant find anywhere that sells iguanas under 1yr old.. i know i should adopt one but i really want one that is young and that i will have for a long time

  • well sometimes they come into rescue groups as babys but even the ones sold in pet stores are about 6 to 9 months old the really young ones like round 3 months alot of them die they just can't take the shipping they do or come to the store pretty sick and since the stores use the same uv light for years and crapy food they dont get much better while there main thing is that its bright green, eyes shiny and very alert and alittle active are all good signs

  • besides you never know just how long an ig will live we known rescued igs that out live personal well taken care of igs u just never know when something can come up that a vet can't save them from and poof their gone, like people who knows how long each of us will live

  • hey do you know anything about red iguanas? are they the same as green iguanas other than of course their skin being red? you probably don't know much about them but it's worth a shot. I went to a pet shop today and they have a baby red iguana for 100$. it looked beautiful but it's pretty expensive. i'm not sure if i should get it or not. The cost really doesnt bother me, I'm more concerned about housing ad caring for it. wondering if it has the same needs as a green iguana.

  • yea its just a rip off, its a green iguana fluker farms & other breeders just try to breed igs who naturally have more orange-red in them trying to make designer color igs only thing is they turn the same adult color as a green ig & all the other babies they breed who keep their green color just go to fill pet stores, its just a way to get u to spend $100 for a green iguana insted of $5 or $10 they have been trying to make blue & white igs too

  • oh ok then nevermind... it's not worth it then

  • Well those new white ones are albino, i dont think they change back to green

  • yea now they may stay the odd color then i've never seen one in person to say but if they are albino then yep they would only i wonder how their skin can take all the uvb they need since they dont have the natural coloring ..... hmmm

  • yeah theyre probably more sensitive. i heard their eyes are extremely sensitive to bright light due to their red or pinkish color.

  • yea could be.... that would make for a real problem as iguanas are supposed to like very bright light much brighter then we would and its needed to make their immune system run at a higher level and they use brighter light to know when to close their eyes some and the pupils some to protect the inner eye from higher uvb levels... they make D3 & more in their skin as uv light penitrates their skin wonder how they will do it without high quality lighting?

  • thanks man

  • Nice video. Thanks for the tips. What is the best microwatts of uv per square centimeter for an iguana?

  • well it depends if they are very healthy or have MBD their age and size but generally 75 to 150 uvb units is great and very close to a bright sunny day you can learn alot more watching both parts of my lighting video it has all the newest research and took about 6 months of reading scientific papers and with the help of experts in the field

  • is it bad if there is only about a foot of distance between the light source and the iguana's basking spot?

  • it could be or maybe not it depends on if its a uvb light and also how much uvb the light puts out thats why RUV sells the Solarmeter 6.2 UVB test meter so you can know how to set up the lights right and when its time to change them out. the uvb meters used to cost many $1000s but this one is well under $200 and just as acturate so its a great deal! and very important to have

  • well one light is a uv light and the other is a heat light.. both lights are hanging next to each other right over a shelf in the cage... not much space in between the light and the shelf so i think ill have to rearange it.

  • well the heat light just check the basking spot temp aslong as its not over 102 for an adult and 99 for a baby then thats fine but for the uvb light you need a uvb test meter like they sell at reptileuv to test and see how close or far it should be so they get the right amount of uvb and its even more important to have this meter if ur using a compact fluorescent uvb their output can be magnafied up to X10 but the fixture ur using & thats why so many reptiles are blinded by these lights

  • or if you got a bad uvb light that isn't putting out much of anything the whole time your using it your thinking your doing good for your reptile but they are not getting any uvb and slowly getting sick when you think they are ok, the 6.2 solarmeter is the cheapest way to make sure your uvb lights work and are safe

  • what's the best light or lights that you reccommend for one iguana?

  • on reptileuv, com the megaray uvb light, one of their matched non uvb fluorescent lights and a regular halogen flood light mixed together make megaray combo lighting and its the best lighting you can use and the safest also they dont sell the halogen yet but you can get one at lowes u can try a 40 watt up to 100 watt to make the basking temp just right then the non-uvb fluorescent adds more color & light then the megaray adds uvb, uva, light, heat while being safe for their eyes

  • which wattage do you use on the megaray? 60, 100, 100 low, 160, 275, or 160 zoo? and do u use externally ballasted or self ballasted? sorry if i get annoying because i ask so many constant questions.

  • i have used the 100 watt SB megaray but i'm switching over to the EB 60 watt it lasts twice as long between 2 and 3 years and doesn't put out as much heat so i can use a 2nd halogen beside it so i can move them indepentandly to get the right amount of heat and of UVB in the same basking spot. the higher wattage ones are better for much bigger set ups like whole rooms. if u email or call them they will also help u match the right light to ur animal & cage size they are very nice to work with

  • NP, thats what i'm here for you can also get alot of ideas and info from my new lighting videos so watch both a couple times if u need cause they were made with the most un to date research on reptile sight, lighting and health

  • how much are the meters?

  • check them out on the reptileuv website for exact prices its like less then 1/10th the price uvb meters used to cost i know that much and the lux meter is like $40? the temp gum is even less but all are very acturate and worth every penny and u can use them for ur other reptiles and maybe even charge a couple bucks to check other peoples set ups that use uvb lights so they know when to change their lights too or maybe if u have a group of reptile friends or a herp group u all can go in on it

  • how do u know when it stops transmitting uv?

  • thats why we tell peope to save up and buy a solermeter 6.2 uvb meter reptileuv sells them for the same online price as the manufacturer. meters used to cost $1000s until these came out they are very acturate and and much cheaper its the only way you'll know how to set up uvb lights right and know when to replace them that way you get the most out of your lights and only replace them when needed so the meter pays for itself in the end plus keeps ur lizards safe too

  • how long does the bulbs ur talking about last? Are they really expensive? And do you have to order them online?! -_-?

  • well the self ballasted ones can last around 12 to 18 months the externally ballasted megaray can last 12-24 & afew have lasted up to 36 months before needing to be replaced! they also come with warrentys so if it does go out they will replace it! they cost alittle more but they save u money cause they last many times longer then all other lights also they are hand made & tested to be safe & high quality. only ones still made here & not in china. yea check them out at reptileuv, com they r great

  • think about it all other big name brand lights last about 3 months they will tell you 6 to 9 months but we know from the testing at the uvguide,uk thats not true so how many of the other brands lights would you have to buy to last as long as 1 of each of the different megarays lights they sell and still the other brands are made in china and can burn reptiles eyes cause they are so cheaply made but dont take my word for it read up the results at the uvguide,uk they are independant testers

  • Thanks a hole lot

  • Hey wats up. I have a green iguana and he is little. But ever since we put the uvb light; his back got a little black. Is that normal.

  • it depends some iguanas turn a dark color to absorb heat faster but the problem with uvb lights now is the compact fluorescent ones from all the name brands are all made in china & their quality is terrible now & they have been blinding lizards! i will only use megaray uvb lights from reptileuv, com they are hand made for the highest quality here still to be safe so i would get rid of the light you got & order a megaray they also last many times longer to & that saves money also get nutribac DF

  • hey i got a new uvlight for my baby igg, but t has a Plexiglases like cover over it,will that block my uvrays

  • yep it sure will, i dont know why they keep selling that light with a cover!?! that light hardly makes any uvb and then the tiny bit it makes is completely blocked by the plastic cover, makes no sense. if you have to use crappy pet store uvb lights the only safe one is the zoomed reptisun 5.0 24inch, 36 inch or 48 inch long uvb fluorescent tube but your ig has to be within 12 to 15 inches at most but still will need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months

  • o my god i fucking hate pet stores!!!

"your baby iguana will need crickets to grow!"

"the blue light will be good for night to"

"that uvb light will be good for a year"

they are so full of shit i would by that stuff that reptile rescuer sells on the internet your always talking about but i have no money!!!

  • oh i know i hardly ever go into a pet store anymore & usually the ones i goto are the ones that dont sell animals just supplies. yea none of us are rich i have to save up to do things for mine at times thats why i tell everyone about reptileuv their lights are not only the best but last so much longer to save money while keeping them healthy so hang in there & save up and you'll get there :)

  • k tanx, how much is a reptile uv one?

  • right now a 100 watt self ballasted megaray is $39 + $10 for shipping but the price will be going up $10 very very soon cause the cost of making them has gone up like 3 times now so they will be going up on the prices real soon, the light also comes with a 6 month warrenty so keep the box and receipt if it gets broken or something. it should last about least 1 year to 2 years before you will need a new one

  • k thanx it kinda sucks but im gonna have to order one soon:/

  • yea but you will see such a big difference in your iguana when you get it :)

  • lol its like robot porn

  • lol

  • Is this care equivalent to any other MVB like ZooMed's PowerSun 100W?

  • yes you should do this for all reptile lights that screw in to make your fixtures last longer and are safer, check them about every 3 months or so.

  • nice! i need to clean mine

my mega ray lasted like 17mo.

  • cool!

  • Hey there Jimmy, Great Video! And Oh, what a nice Clear Voice you have. Im gonna clean my "Mega ray" TODAY!!! Thanks to Bobmac too!

    PeaVE ¥ (Kim)

  • Thanks Kim, lol dont know bout my voice but i'm glad you liked the video and learned something new, as i did when Bobmac told me this is something that needs to be done to let me know so they can get even more life out of their Megaray lights and fixtures and its something that should be done for all types of lights and fixtures. i wouldn't have thought about it but he is always trying to keep reptiles healthy and safe with his products and tips

  • Great tips! We love our Megaray bulbs at CoRHS!

    Happy 4th of July!

  • Excellent!

    Thank you every much.

How often should I clean my bulbs? Once a month? Every 3 or 4 months?

  • Check them and clean them about every 3 months and check out reptileuv, com for more info too :)

  • Wonderful!!

  • Thanks glad you liked it and check out reptileuv, com for more info too

  • very informative... thank you!

  • your welcome! dont forget everybody rate my videos if u like'um or they helped you :) so more people will see them

  • Never would have occurred to me - thanks for posting this!

  • your welcome and it is a great idea, the owner of reptileuv, com was telling me about it and helped with tips on how to do it and how much it will make things last longer to save money and keep the reptiles happy and healthy, it will be on the reptileuv site shorty aswell to help get the word out

  • great Jimmy!!
