I'm not alone in this. One day I was in a pool in Canada at a hotel, anyways I was swimming & my brother asks me what's wrong with your chest & I asked "what what's wrong with it? He said it goes in. So ever sense I would not take my shirt off I was to embarrassed. My mother thought it had something to do with my crones my father thought it was because I slouch and because I'm thin. So I decided to google it.
They can cover all of the costs or a big part of the bill. I will bust my ass working to pay the rest afterward but hopefully everything goes good for me, Ill post again soon to let you guys know how it goes. I am 6'2 tall 135 pounds and worked out for 2 years can see my 6pack and great muscle mass around the hole. Hopefully after surgery I can have an 8pack =D
Hi guys, I am currently 18 years old and really want to get the surgery. I have an appointment date to see the doctor on August 23, 2011 but only to talk and have my tests done. Then I hopefully pass the tests needed to get the surgery and have a surgery date. I am so happy that the hospital is only 20 minutes away and it is an experienced doctor that trained with Dr. Donald Nuss himself and has had 500+ surgery with no major consequences. I have a crap insurance called medicare and hopefully
@edmundoo911 i guess so, i smoke it and i dont have surgery. my lung puffs out really quickly after smoking though but idk if its the same with everyone
So I have to get surgery NOW, while I'm young (15 y.o ) if I want to lose it? I have taken X-Ray but the doctor just said that it should go away as my body continue to grow.. And if I swam a lot it would help.....
@bentskey29 It does hurt.. Alot! My brother got it and said it is the worst pain he has ever felt. But the pain doesnt really scare me, I have waited a long time to get mine, I suggest you get it too buddy. haha
@chancesGLEC14 Each person's condition is different but putting off makes is more difficult to have the procedure done later in life if later the condition changes. Dr. Nuss has only been doing this procedure about 15 years now and long term data is not available.
@chancesGLEC14 it will never go away, if your gunna go with out the surgery just keep it covered. If i were you id get. I dont really have a choice my family wont pay for it so high school really sucked. Now im an adult all i have to is have to do is save up cash and find a damn doctor that will do it. @chancesGLEC14 never put it off, check it out. I had it when I was 9. The condition looked okay, but when the doctors took x-rays, they found out it was bad. When I went for the surgery, the surgeons said that my internal condition was so bad, that within the month my chest would have collapsed on my lungs or my sternum bone would have pierced my heart, either way, the outcome was deadly. I'm not saying yours is like that, you might just want to get it checked out if you haven't already.
@chancesGLEC14 if your bones haven't fully developed then your P.E will continue to grow untill you have stopped growing. It depends on how severe your P.E is, I suggest get it looked at, your heart would most likely be at risk if anything was at risk. It doesn't go away, if your worried about the P.E cosmetically you can try working out. Building your chest and abdominal muscle will greatly improve the visual condition of your chest.
i have PE. i got surgery in peru. no with nuss. i think here in peru is not common. i'm searching for information about how to get nuss. i feel uncomfortable with my pe because the surgery that i had wasn't fine. i need information please =) thanx!
Dr. Nuss told me he was doing 3 operations a day ( summer months) with little or no complications. As far as Sweden, the internet is the best place I know to search. The Nuss procedure is very well know and practiced in many hospitals by trained professions.

@calinkus: My son is 14 and have PE. His dream is to play professional soccer and he is right now in the minor's for a professional soccer team. I've heard that he could start playing soccer again three months after surgery, Am I right? At that competitive level? Or he'll loose two years or more and with that giving up his dream?
@avillarreal8 I am not in a positon to speak as a professional. Your son should have an evaluation with a professional to determind his own condition as no two situations are the same. As to your question, my son played sports all 3 years wiht the bars inplanted, and taking the bars out was such a simple procedure, a week later he did whatever he wanted to do. It has been several years now and there has been no problem since the bars have been out.
@calinkus Thanks for your prompt answer... I have an appointment with the cardiologist next week to perform pulmonary and cardiac function to assess the need for surgery... Thanks again...

@calinkus Aren't there a lot or major risks in this as well? The Nuss operation? And I live in sweden, isn't thre any place in sweden where I can get this operation?
@DrinkinMusic Dr. Nuss told me he was doing 3 operations a day ( summer months) with little or no complications. As far as Sweden, the internet is the best place I know to search. The Nuss procedure is very well know and practiced in many hospitals by trained professions.
I am 29 and it's now been 6 months since my bar came out. It was in for two years. This operation has changed my life. I have to say anybody who is doubting the success or risk of this surgery, you have no need to worry. I was in the hospital for 5 days and only on pain meds for 9 days. After 3 months i was released to do what ever i wanted. They now make a center incision and insert scopes to help reduce any risk. If you have any questions please feel free to email zach@image180.com
@kewlkid629 While it is in, the doctor told me no contact sports, bu I dirt bike and go to the beach and stuff and its been fine. But something like football probably wouldnt be too good for it.
I am 45 and I have had this condition all of my life. I was a skinny kid until I started hitting the gym in my early 20's, packing on muscle. I was made fun of in high school when it came time for shirts or skins, now people think that I have great pecs and nobody even mentions it. I am at my condo pool and beach as much as possible and shirtless all the time. I am glad to know that this is available for men who have felt the same way I did, but hitting the gym really helped me.
I am happy that all turned out well for you. Sorry about your eariler years. I can't help but wonder how many could benefit like you did at the gym and not need surgery. According to Dr. Nuss, some conditons would not allow gym workouts. I hope that all the research will help others in the years to come. Thanks for your post.
@trippsurfer i am 12 and i workout with my brother mostly my pecs because i have this i dont tell alll my friends because then they will treat liike i will need special help . i want to be like you
I dont understand why you complain about this everyone has their defects so what if yours are a little more pronounced. I am turning 15 rather soon and will be having a surgery to correct my Pectus Excavatum within the month but i have never had issues with take my shirt off in public its just the kind of thing you have to accept until you can get it fixed its not something to be ashmed of and if people make fun of you its only because they wish they had a dent also :D
dude im 14 years old to and i always get made fun of my sunkin chest but im starting to do push ups cause it helps improves the chest its just a tip but man really dude i no ur pain its hella embarassing having a wierd chest
Does anyone know how much the procedure costs? I'm 20 years old, i have no medical insurance, and i want it BAAAAD. So if anyone knows roughly how much it costs let me know please

How deep would the hole have to be to justify surgery, in your opinion? I get short of breath fairly easily, which inhibits my ability to play wind instruments greatly.
I am 22 and had a severe funnel chest. I was operated with the Nuss-Technique about 6 weeks ago and even though it might look a little crappy right now, the doctors say, that the bones need up to 2 years to relocate to their new position.
I had no problems before with the PE, besides that it looked shitty, but there were complications expected if I'm getting older.
The process takes its time and pain, but I'm not regretting it. I encourage you to do it, if it is medical relevant.
Excuse me if I write in a wrong english, but I'm an italian boy...there is the risk of death if I keep my Pectus Excavatum?According to you it is better I do the operation or not?Pectus excavatum will give me health problem when I will be older or not?
My mom side grandad had P.E. (I do also) and he lived 90 years. He never exceled on sports but he didn´t had any issue with "normal" activities. He actually was also a smoker. IMO you might not excel on sports (I might be wrong as I just saw a famous swimer with PE) but you will definetively learn to accept yourself.
There is a risk as there is in all surgeries, thought its is Extremely unlikely that there would be anything that would kill you, they guy i went to to have mine done has done thousands of these, non as far as i know resulting in any deaths
Im nearly 15 and i have a mild case of this, I've only notised it in the past year or so, some mates in school have even notised it, I also have pecks which makes it even more defined so it stands out, My breating seems to be getting bad because i cant run long distance or compete my trampolining for long periods of time about the longest i can run is the length of the rugby pitch, should i go see my GP about this?????
i couldnt even keep up with my football team anymore.... i never had that problem and i was always a top player but i cant do it and my parents dont think i need surgery to fix my 'little dent thing' i fucking hate my chest and how i cant breathe well and i really want to fix this shit once and for all
im 15 and i have mild concave chest. i first noticed it when i was 10 but didnt tell anyone. since i noticed it i played football since then to get rid of it,, last week i realised it started getting worse again, puberty started growiing my ribs and pushing in my sternum again
i didnt mean like in a week it got worse i meant last week i realised that my chest wasnt getting better anymore its still only mild but i got to get rid of ittttt
my left chest is like flat and is dented but my right one is normal soo wen i take off my shirt only my right chest is sticking out anybody know why and anybody da same as me??
thanks for all the advice. im getting mine done hopefully in november, im meeting with the surgeon in a few days. the only thing i'm worried about is waking up in the middle of surgery. i have never had surgery before and just the thought of waking up scares the crap out of me. i mean i doubt you would wake up but is it even slightly possible?
Its possible yes. but VERY unlikely, are you getting it done in Norfolk by chance? because then you would be meeting with Dr. Gouretski or however u spell is name, hes the one that did mine, but yea, theres like a 1 in a million chance ull wake up in surgery :)
Ish, my brothers had it done when they were 10 and 14, from what i was told when i was there the cut off for doing it is arouns 26yrs old they wont do it anymore, so get it done n over with while your young lol, so yea 17 is kinda a good age for it to be done, in and out in 2-3 years, your age maybe 2 years so finish highschool n get it out a year later :P
Well your gonna want to talk to them and have them talk to a doctor, depending where you are. However A LOT of doctors have never even heard of this, they all said it was normal for me and my brothers until we went to a doctor in Peoria, IL and they told us what it really was. I had mine done out in Norfolk Virginia though, since it is the best place to have it done and Dr. Nuss and his right hand man who did mine is out there.
You also might wanna make sure and see how much of it your parents insurance would cover, because trust me, its not cheap lol, ours covered all but a few hundred but yea.. i'd get it checked out by someone who actually knows what it is and have them see if it'd benefit you a lot or not before just sayin ur gonna have it done
I'm 20 and had this done little over a month ago, ive also had to brothers one older and one younger that have had it done, both had it done wen they were between 10-14yrs old, i didnt have to at the time so i didnt, recently though i went back in for a checkup and found that the "funnel" was pushing in on my lungs and heart, don't get it done just beacuse it LOOKS better, get checked to see if its actually causing issues, i didnt even notice the difference until after i had it done.
ppl from all over the world want to do somethin with their bodies to look different from the others and now when u do pectus u want an operation, u are lazy to do some push-ups and go to the gym,u are embarresed to go to the pool etc.? bahah this is rediculous dudes, don't be shy in front of ppl, this is the worst thing u can do ! just make push-ups go to the fitness-gym at least 2-3 time a week and everything will be perfect! and as for the ebarrassing part.. BE UNIQUE,NOT SHY ...
thats is so true. people if you are shy of this then go the gym like he said and if you have awsome abbs and chest and what have you then who cares about a silly hole the girls will still dig you just be yourself if you feel you want to be different put some effort in at the gym its not hard i have this same thing and i have started working out and i can already tell the difference in confidence aswell as physical
both of you are so wrong. to some people who have a severe case of pectus excavatum, push ups will not fix the problem. and going to gym will also not do anything if the person is already having a hard time breathing and performing such as per your guys example, going to the gym. it is not laziness to not to go to gym specially if you don't feel good physically. not every case is the same. not everything is fixed by working out in the gym.
if you have PE then im guessing you don't have a very severe case. try being a teenage girl with it....its the worst thing ever. i cant just go to a gym and do push-ups and everything with be ok. if being 'unique and confident' means wearing a bikini and having people laugh and stare, then that's the furthest thing from what I wanna be. be a little more sympathetic
Videos like this one and other medical videos are now available exclusively for physicians from all the world on symposier .(com) , it is closed for physicians only. I´m from Austria and I did the Nuss procedure too. The surgery was done 3 months ago, and it was one of the best decisions i made in my life!
I already feel much better with my body and I'm looking forward going to the swimming pool!
I'm 18 now and I can't remember when I went swimming the last time! I probably was 12 or so!
To everybody who has pectus excavatum I just wanna say, do the surgery and you will feel much better and happier! The pain is really hard sometimes, but it's worth it!
I had the Nuss Procedure when I was 16. I had 2 bars put in. One came out when I was 18 bc I broke a stabilizer bar playing soccer in college. The second came out a year later.
I had the Ravage Procedure when I was, but it failed. I have had a total of 5 chest surgeries.
I'd be happy to answer any questions that potential patients have or their parents.
It was a long, slow recovery. It has been 6 years since my last surgery. I still have some pain and discomfort, but live a normal, active life!
I have pectus Excavatum and it used to not bother me, but now im 14 and its getting at my self confidence, i want the surgery. how do i go about finding a doctor and what not?
Suggest going on the internet and find the hospital in Norfolk Va where Dr. Nuss does his procedures and research and even call for md advise and recomendations.- Also helps to do what you are doing and get opinions of others.
my chest is way worse, only one side of my chest indents and its not in the middle its on the entire right side. I don't even like to hug the chix cuz i dont want them to ask. So embaricing i havent even talked to my mom about it. And I'm going to feel like a failure I don't qualify for the seals because of it
listen m8 dont let it get u down theres much worse things in life i have the same problam but i dont care about it now i just get on with it and as far as girls go i have no problam with them just stay confident m8 trust me :)
Ha i've learned to live with my chest. My being in fit kinda makes up for it. I just want to do more in life than be a civilian, i want to be the most elite fight unit ever
Video should go down into some history book. It is in our family records and a good number or copies given to Dr. Nuss for his family and generations to come. What a worderful person to meet and get to know.
Can u play sport or do any physical activity after the Nuss procedure? Because i am very active and i really need an operation to fix my chest? Plz help me.
I am not a Dr. My son got the Nuss procedure and I am only a parent but asked Dr. Nuss many questions, some on video. My son played sports after his operation, but his bars where in from age 18-20 and by 20 his bones were 'set'. Your operation is more important than sports, but most activities should be no problem.
I am 25 years old. My pectus excavatum seems to be a severe case. As I get older the condition is getting worse. I have occasional chest pain. When I play basketball I notice that I just can't breath like normal people. My chest is sunk in what seems to be at least 2 to 3 inches. My posture is starting to bother me. My lower ribs stick out very far making it look like I have a gut. Any advice on what type of procedure would be best for me?
thanks a lot but i think i changed my mind. its kinda scary. i went and saw a dr and they told me it would be considered cosmetic since mine doesn't affect my health.
i have a pectus excavatum as well, though told not severe..im just curious if it will interfere with muscle production when i work out. Also wondering if it puts more stess on my chest when i do benchpresses and such, anyone have any answers? i would much appreciate it :P
can anyone please tell me the cost of the surgery? i have searched but cant find any info anywhere on the cost... also, is it known as cosmetic or medical surgery coz in malta medical is covered, and i'm 16 by the way...
Only by getting an exam and taking tests can a professional determand if YOUR condition is cosmetic or necessary. Cost can vary also by medical centers and agreed coverage between centers and insurance companies. I can only speak for one situation. My insurance company will billed about $27,000.00 Hope this helps. Mayber others on YouTube can comment.
Dr. Nuss performed on me in 2004. If it is a moderate to severe case insurance will pay for it. $60,000-$70,000 without insurance. If your cardiologist can find any pressure on your heart(mainly the lower right ventrical) it is an immediate health risk. Therefore, insurance will cover it. Hope this helped.
Mine was about $60,000 but with insurance it was a mere $1,600 and they will work with you on a payment plan if you need it. Also going back to the "flexibility" issue. On older patients doing a lot of cardio (if you can) will help. Dr. Kuhn said I was a lot more flexible than she expected and she attributed that to my exercise habits.
"An Immediate Health risk" if pressure on the heart? Are you serious!!! My heart is compressed and displaced and my chest doctor thought that I'm just fine. What do you mean by immediate health risk? Am I in danger? I've have everything from palpitations. When I lay down sometimes I get a real HARD thump with my heartbeat that hurts.
how much is the procedure? Do most health insurances cover it? Mine is much worse than the one shown in the video. I'm 28 years old, can the procedure still be done?
Unfortunately, the procedure most likely cannot be done. After reaching a certain age (upper teens), your bones begin to harden. As a result, the bar won't be able to bend your bones. Because you're 28 and your bones are hard (which reduces the risk of health problems since your bones can't flex anymore), insurance probably won't cover the cost of the operation. If you would like, you can contact your local hospital and ask how much the procedure would cost if it can still be done.
You can absolutely have it done. I am 26 and Im having it done in 2 days. Dr. Nuss did one on a 48 year old man. Don't listen to these ppl. The only difference with me is that they are using 2 bars instead of one.
This is how it works. before the age of 23 your bone is still growing and is very soft. Surgery before this age is the ideal situation. because the bone is still growing. Once you become an adult then the bone starts to harden making it harder to move the rib cage. Each person is different and nobody will no until you actually see D. Nuss.

@calinkus: My son is 14 and have PE. His dream is to play professional soccer and he is right now in the minor's for a professional soccer team. I've heard that he could start playing soccer again three months after surgery, Am I right? At that competitive level? Or he'll loose two years or more and with that giving up his dream?
avillarreal8 1 year ago
@avillarreal8 I am not in a positon to speak as a professional. Your son should have an evaluation with a professional to determind his own condition as no two situations are the same. As to your question, my son played sports all 3 years wiht the bars inplanted, and taking the bars out was such a simple procedure, a week later he did whatever he wanted to do. It has been several years now and there has been no problem since the bars have been out.
calinkus 1 year ago
@calinkus Thanks for your prompt answer... I have an appointment with the cardiologist next week to perform pulmonary and cardiac function to assess the need for surgery... Thanks again...

@calinkus Aren't there a lot or major risks in this as well? The Nuss operation? And I live in sweden, isn't thre any place in sweden where I can get this operation?
DrinkinMusic 1 year ago

I encourage you to do it, if it is medical relevant.

rapshit1992 2 years ago
My mom side grandad had P.E. (I do also) and he lived 90 years. He never exceled on sports but he didn´t had any issue with "normal" activities. He actually was also a smoker. IMO you might not excel on sports (I might be wrong as I just saw a famous swimer with PE) but you will definetively learn to accept yourself.

There is a risk as there is in all surgeries, thought its is Extremely unlikely that there would be anything that would kill you, they guy i went to to have mine done has done thousands of these, non as far as i know resulting in any deaths

Ish, my brothers had it done when they were 10 and 14, from what i was told when i was there the cut off for doing it is arouns 26yrs old they wont do it anymore, so get it done n over with while your young lol, so yea 17 is kinda a good age for it to be done, in and out in 2-3 years, your age maybe 2 years so finish highschool n get it out a year later :P

sweet sounds awesome, thanks for the help man. i'm just nervous to talk to my parents about it...
Scrubs141 2 years ago
Well your gonna want to talk to them and have them talk to a doctor, depending where you are. However A LOT of doctors have never even heard of this, they all said it was normal for me and my brothers until we went to a doctor in Peoria, IL and they told us what it really was. I had mine done out in Norfolk Virginia though, since it is the best place to have it done and Dr. Nuss and his right hand man who did mine is out there.
fishrailroad 2 years ago
You also might wanna make sure and see how much of it your parents insurance would cover, because trust me, its not cheap lol, ours covered all but a few hundred but yea.. i'd get it checked out by someone who actually knows what it is and have them see if it'd benefit you a lot or not before just sayin ur gonna have it done

ppl from all over the world want to do somethin with their bodies to look different from the others and now when u do pectus u want an operation, u are lazy to do some push-ups and go to the gym,u are embarresed to go to the pool etc.? bahah this is rediculous dudes, don't be shy in front of ppl, this is the worst thing u can do ! just make push-ups go to the fitness-gym at least 2-3 time a week and everything will be perfect! and as for the ebarrassing part.. BE UNIQUE,NOT SHY ...
hedroxthelegend 2 years ago
thats is so true. people if you are shy of this then go the gym like he said and if you have awsome abbs and chest and what have you then who cares about a silly hole the girls will still dig you just be yourself if you feel you want to be different put some effort in at the gym its not hard i have this same thing and i have started working out and i can already tell the difference in confidence aswell as physical
lmbjuly 2 years ago
both of you are so wrong. to some people who have a severe case of pectus excavatum, push ups will not fix the problem. and going to gym will also not do anything if the person is already having a hard time breathing and performing such as per your guys example, going to the gym. it is not laziness to not to go to gym specially if you don't feel good physically. not every case is the same. not everything is fixed by working out in the gym.
mathew03bh 2 years ago
Do you have PE? is it severe or even moderate? If it is and you can do everything that you said then you're a really amazing person.
If your just saying this on the internet to sound smart, then take it somewhere else. People reading these posts are people who want help.
hellomonkey302 2 years ago
if you have PE then im guessing you don't have a very severe case. try being a teenage girl with it....its the worst thing ever. i cant just go to a gym and do push-ups and everything with be ok. if being 'unique and confident' means wearing a bikini and having people laugh and stare, then that's the furthest thing from what I wanna be. be a little more sympathetic

I am not a Dr. My son got the Nuss procedure and I am only a parent but asked Dr. Nuss many questions, some on video. can anyone please tell me the cost of the surgery? i have searched but cant find any info anywhere on the cost... also, is it known as cosmetic or medical surgery coz in malta medical is covered, and i'm 16 by the way...
noizeynick 3 years ago
Only by getting an exam and taking tests can a professional determand if YOUR condition is cosmetic or necessary. Cost can vary also by medical centers and agreed coverage between centers and insurance companies. I can only speak for one situation. My insurance company will billed about $27,000.00 Hope this helps. Mayber others on YouTube can comment.
calinkus 3 years ago
Hope this helped.
bbanner00 3 years ago
Mine was about $60,000 but with insurance it was a mere $1,600 and they will work with you on a payment plan if you need it. Also going back to the "flexibility" issue. On older patients doing a lot of cardio (if you can) will help. Dr. Kuhn said I was a lot more flexible than she expected and she attributed that to my exercise habits.
firebyrd516 3 years ago
"An Immediate Health risk" if pressure on the heart? Are you serious!!! My heart is compressed and displaced and my chest doctor thought that I'm just fine. What do you mean by immediate health risk? Am I in danger? I've have everything from palpitations. When I lay down sometimes I get a real HARD thump with my heartbeat that hurts.

JMR112787 3 years ago
how much is the procedure? Do most health insurances cover it? Mine is much worse than the one shown in the video. I'm 28 years old, can the procedure still be done?
mycatisromeo 3 years ago
Unfortunately, the procedure most likely cannot be done. After reaching a certain age (upper teens), your bones begin to harden. As a result, the bar won't be able to bend your bones. Because you're 28 and your bones are hard (which reduces the risk of health problems since your bones can't flex anymore), insurance probably won't cover the cost of the operation. If you would like, you can contact your local hospital and ask how much the procedure would cost if it can still be done.
JMR112787 3 years ago
You can absolutely have it done. I am 26 and Im having it done in 2 days. Dr. Nuss did one on a 48 year old man. Don't listen to these ppl. The only difference with me is that they are using 2 bars instead of one.
firebyrd516 3 years ago
This is how it works. before the age of 23 your bone is still growing and is very soft. Surgery before this age is the ideal situation. because the bone is still growing. Once you become an adult then the bone starts to harden making it harder to move the rib cage. Each person is different and nobody will no until you actually see D. Nuss.
