I think it's because Brad's older stuff was 100% his own work. You can watch an interview with him on YouTube, he did everything by himself. For television, you have to apply to as general as an audience as you can, so other people had to join in and tone down some of the original stuff.

Let's face it: The average person is only going to be confused by raw Brad Neely genius.
