I'm fine with kilts but Zhang's clothes look like a schoolgirl's outfit. I don't think the standard Sylphide outfit has a red cardigan ... He danced well enough that I could tell it was a boy, but I had my moments of doubt.
@Azevedo2001 No, the participants are free to choose one of the 20 variations the jury selects for the competitions, though there're harder variations (like Aurora's or Raymonda's) that only older participants (the 17-18 years old group) are allowed to choose. So like Arrghigiveup said, the ones that made it to the finals just happened to choose Swanilda.
As someone not very familiar with the inner workings of the Prix, are the variations that the dancers are given to select from really so limited that all we're pretty much left with are Swanilda after Swanilda and Albrecht after Albrecht? Regardless of how well they were danced and changes in the variation, for me, it grew a bit tiresome. If someone could answer this for me I'd be very grateful. Thank you.
@wolfgang731 Well, off the top of my head, there are usually variations available from Don Quixote, La Bayadere, La Sylphide, Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, Raymonda, La Fille Mal Gardee and of course Coppelia and Giselle. Sometimes there're two different variations available from the same ballet. As I mentioned in another comment, about 50 dancers've been eliminated by the time finals roll around, and it's probably just coincidence that many of the remainder happened to pick the same variations
@wolfgang731 You get that every year with different variations, and I've seen years with whole bunches of Jameses and Kitris instead. Another reason could be that they're just popular because from the standpoint of a dancer, the Swanilda variation is one of the easiest to emote while at the same time maintaining a certain level of technical difficulty. Same for the Albrecht: the guys get to look all noble and emo while displaying awesome lines.
Heh, keep in mind that by the time they hit the finals, about 50 dancers have been eliminated. It may just be that of the ones that got through, many just happened to pick the Swanilda and Albrecht variations. This sort of thing does tend to happen. I remember years where there was a busload of Kitris instead.
@LVdancerbabe yes, there are different versions of the choreographies, if you watch carefully you'll see that they do not dance exactly the same variations.
Yuko Horisawa is so adorable! :) So beautiful.

Albrecht is popular with men while Swanhilda is popular with girls.

Youtube doesn't even have a 15 minute any more much less a 10 minute limit. There's no reason for these breaks right in the middle of a dance!

I've seen girls who can do better double tours than Favre. But everyone is still great.

the candidates have to choose their variations in a specific list of them, they can not take whatever they want!

@cnsmjuju They must have some artistic freedom with choreography though?

Why do they all chose the same variation? It's just Swanilda and Albrecht all the way. The judges must be so tired...
