These are very different situations. We are already pulling out of Iraq. I'm not sure where the possibility for victory comes in. To be successful in Iraq we have to be able to offer security and jobs for the Iraqi people, which we are not able to do. This is not about defeating people in a military sense, it is about cleaning up after the mess created in pursuing Saddam. We are not financially or ideologically prepared for that kind of long term commitment.
The reality is that our troops do cause horrendous human rights abuses abroad. The way they represent our country is sometimes embarrassing. That being noted, he was never allowed to make his point, which I find disrespectful. Iraq did not threaten our freedom. Even Al Queda may kill thousands of people, but that does not threaten our freedom. I believe both sides are idiots here. The anti military blogger avoids the strong points, and Hannity says nothing intelligent.

These are very different situations. We are already pulling out of Iraq. I'm not sure where the possibility for victory comes in. To be successful in Iraq we have to be able to offer security and jobs for the Iraqi people, which we are not able to do. This is not about defeating people in a military sense, it is about cleaning up after the mess created in pursuing Saddam. We are not financially or ideologically prepared for that kind of long term commitment.

The reality is that our troops do cause horrendous human rights abuses abroad. The way they represent our country is sometimes embarrassing. That being noted, he was never allowed to make his point, which I find disrespectful. Iraq did not threaten our freedom. Even Al Queda may kill thousands of people, but that does not threaten our freedom. I believe both sides are idiots here. Any time a country suffers massive costs financially and in terms of human lives, they are going to lose support for the war. The reality is that we underestimated the resolve of the North Vietnamese and entered into a war we were not willing to see through. The same is true in Iraq and to a lesser extent, Afghanistan. The troops don't make any decisions about when and where to defend the country. What the troops think is irrelevant. Troops don't deserve respect simply because they're troops, especially when the overwhelming majority of them support, believe, and participate in wars that I disagree with.

It's interesting to think that we wouldn't have freedoms without a military to protect them; I have respect for people who joined prior to our involvement in Iraq, but think those who joined to fight there were sorely misguided if they thought they were protecting the USA.
