@AnemicChia Its not. I remember hearing, I think it was in a different confidential episode (maybe tennant's farewell episode?) that since they knew Christopher Eccleston was only going to play the Doctor for one series, by the time that they had finished taping the first series, they were looking for a new Doctor. David Tennant said that when he tried out for Ten, the first series had yet to air. In other words, he was already slated to be Ten when he did this.
@imamadmad1 He did! I heard that they had already cast him for the tenth doctor when the first series started. Christopher Eccleston only signed a 1-year contract.
@Scottishgal78 David was narrating this confidential episode because he was chosen as a possible candidate as the 9th Doctor but Eccleston got the job but when Eccleston announced he wouldn't be in the 2nd series, BBC confirmed that David would be his replacement. Plus David voiced characters for DW Big Finish Audio Dramas and for the Scream of the Shalka webcast so maybe the BBC thought that they should give him a major role on Doctor Who
i like how when they were showing other shows that russel did the ones they have are with Christopher Eccleston..... AND David Tennant, forshadowing maybe?
@emogoesrawr it wouldn't surprise me at all, considering his timing and the fact he debuted only a few months later... they most likely cast him months in advance.
@227060 I hate fans who disregard the old series in favour of the new, people who only watched for the Doctor/Rose Romance, or simply because David Tennant is in it, that's so much more a problem...
@Timelord6661 oh i dunno friend. In my experience their disregard is out of a lack of knoweldge/fear of the VAST number of stories which preceeded 2005. I don't think its out of spite, not most of the time any way, its more of a comfort zone thing, the new series was designed in 2005 and 2010 to invite people on board for the journey. if they are saying "new is better than old" or "old is better than new" we have a problem.
@227060 its a thing about familiarity i guess. tbh it was around even before 2005, people jumped on at all different points int he series and felt confortable with 'their doctor' and the stories they began to follow from that point onwards. Like River Song its strange meeting someone before they met you so to speak, its weird seeing the Third Docotr if you began and followed the series from the fith docotr onwards etc. I'd NEVER disregard the TV show eps old or new tho its the same show
@227060 If you check the Doctor Who official facebook page, you will see comment after comment on every single post (even if it isn't relevant) about how the newest series is bad because it lacks David Tennant, people disregarding Matt Smith as the Doctor, people have this mindset that Doctor Who as a whole revolves around David Tennant's character, Matt and Moffat are so controversial VERY unfairly, Matt's considered a bad Doctor by some because he's different from the two who preceded him...
@Timelord6661 well that is completly outta order. Look i'll proudly proclaim Tennant to be my favourite Docotor, i love him as an actor and in the role of the Doctor. But...i haven't a bad word about Smith. he is brilliant and i hope he sticks around beyond the 50th anniversary. his first series was sos os for me, but his newest one has blown me away (and its only half over). Smith and Moffat shouldn't be controversial. I hope these ppl are just DT fangirls. change like this is PART of Dr Who
@Timelord6661 ...reasons that AREN'T Doctor Who, hate towards the RTD series is understandable because it introduced people into the show for the wrong reasons, and that makes it all the more harder when the character of the Doctor goes back to his routes, because to them, that isn't the show they like, they would have never touched the classic series with a barge pole, to them David is the original, and because he's so different from the original himself, it means people weren't watching...
@Timelord6661 ...for the reasons that make the show always the same regardless to change, hence the Steven Moffat/ Matt Smith hate, that is far more of a problem...
@Timelord6661 friend...hasn't the doctor always changed tho. isn't the strength of the show its ability to assign different characterists to the docotr (aside from must love adventure and justice and be very very clever). ppl who think DT is the first need to do their homework. and isn't hate towards RTD a bit harsh? 1 may dislike what he did, but at the series was no longer cancelled and had the hope of moving in a direction some would prefer later on
@227060 ... but the way in which he is different, is that he's far more intuned with the classic Doctor's, as in going for the more Alien approach, no real emotion, The new series introduced itself as a series totally different from it's predecessors', it attracted a new audience by means that don't make it Doctor Who. all the Soap Opera elements RTD injected has caused new 'fan' to see the best of Doctor Who in that light, but as a result it was more thanlikely that they were watching for...
@Timelord6661 I disagree, the fifth and Eight Docotr's also had more emotional approuches and both Eccelston and Tennant had alien aspects to them. the emotion was astrength not a weakness imo. i think it was a case of tv itself having changed alot btwen the 80s and 200s, more so than the changes in tv btwn the 60s, 70s and 80s. DW under the Moff does still have emotion in it and has a more alien approuch to, it just shows the diversity of this show. technically there was no soap opera tho
@227060 Even the more seemingly reserved Doctor's had alien elements too them e.g. Paul McGann was very passionate, some would say overly passionate and enthusiastic, more so than the average human, every classic Doctor has had something that makes them seem a lot more than just an actor playing a character of the age that the person actually is, Davison was pretty over dramatic and had a child like energy, as I said before, McGann was very passionate, in a sort of eccentric English man...
@227060 .. even the costumes were very much like that, e.g. When would you see someone of Mcgann's age dressed in such as costumes casually?? you simply wouldn't. Tennant and Ecclestone on the other hand were quiet the contrary, they were just too human and Soap Opera styled, there was nothing about them that really suggested alien, eccentric human yes, but not alien, they were also FAR too relatable, the less relatable a character is, the more of an issue you're going to have saying goodbye...
@Timelord6661 but isn'tit...actually no. friend, i take issue with many things you've said, but at the end of the day we both love the same show do we not. i have disocvered over 2 years that..even for a sci-fi TV show (which are some of the worst examples of this already) Dr Who has an extremly fragmented and diverse fan base and variety of opinions. theres relativly little consensus which might be a good thing in some ways. tho i might disagree and might not like it...
@227060 ... i respect your opinion. I hope you also respect mine that regards the RTD era as a good one and Drs #9 and 10 also as memorable admirable and worthy of the canon in thier own way, just as each prev doctor was unique like Smith is now. At the end of the day, we shouldn't segregate the older episodes from the newer ones, nor the older Docotr's from the newer ones. same show same charaacter who can wonderfully change constatly.
@227060 ... the Doctor isn't supposed to be a relate-able character, he's a character of interest, and is likeable, but not relate-able , that's why the companion is there, to give us the humanity to the show and the human perspective of an alien character, that's something both classic Who and Moffat/ Smith era has done, it's Doctor Who formula, RTD changed it too much, and it's become a show that people like for reasons it shouldn't if it wants for live longer than the Tennant era.
@Timelord6661 please refer to my previous comments above bcos this continues on. What i am trying to say friend (rather long widnedly i admit). to each thier own, everyone has thier own opinion which they are entiitled to. let us agree to disagree, not turn this into a fight (not that i am accusing myself or you of doing that so please don't misinterpret that bcos that is easily done in written form) and go our peacfully our seperate ways loving the series in our own unique manner
it is David for the 1st episode of season 1. If you continue reading the wikipedia article it says David Tennant did the 1st and Simon Pegg continued the rest of the series.
