I wonder if he had known any other language, possibly a Germanic one, before starting to learn Icelandic. Because if he did, it's not such an impossible task if you are in perfect conditions (in the target country with a teacher spending all your time studying).
@FalloutNVplayah Doesn't really matter, a linguist should recognize the importance of international adjustment, in terms of being able to make him/herself understood.
She is clearly failing at that, she's barely making herself through a semi-advanced conversation in English. It's quite embarrassing.
@FalloutNVplayah And yeah, nice call out there, me being a "Dumbass". Clearly shows that your weak little mind can't handle a proper discussion without dropping curse words, congratulations. :>

I'm very sceptical of this video for exaggerating Daniel Tammet's language ability. For example, it's well documented that he studied French and German at school for six or seven years, and got "B" grades in both at his A-Level exams at age 18. Good grades, but hardly exceptional. The documentary, being sensationalist, doesn't mention this; "Got a B grade in French after seven years" sounds so much less impressive than "Learned Icelandic in seven days".
What you say here is an example of classically specious reasoning. DT's prior grades have nothing to do with this particular learning idiom, this example. They are simply markers for that particular performance. In fact, his prior "Bs" might be a BETTER explanation for why learning via language immersion works better, or produces better results, particularly for him. Pimsleur knew this. But aside, what I take issue with is the very poor logical connection you try to make.
I am so sick of hearing people boast about how difficult and 'impossible' in some contexts their language is and that they have sayings it is impossible to learn, all that in my opinion is bullshit. Yes it IS amazing that this man could learn it in just one week and speak the language rather fluidly, but overall there is no such thing as an impossible or MOST DIFFICULT language, if one has the desire to learn and puts in the effort, then it is an easy language :)
Not really, no. Some languages are much easier to transition to than others because they follow familiar rules -- e.g., the Romance languages. There most definitely are differences in difficulty of acquisition among languages.

If you speak english, learning german is going to be easy.
But if you speak japanese, learning italian, portuguese, spanish, english or german is going to be a fucking nightmare.
I don't see him as gifted. If he is gifted, then everybody else is gifted. Humans have so much potential. Speaking in other tongues in a week is quite fascinating, but I would imagine that he was probably very determined. He had to adapt, so his brain went into "Child mode", the same mode that philosophers use, but for his linguistic skills, rather than his thinking skills.
@alexross8 Are you fucking kidding? Have you ever tried learning a language? The guy learned a language, one that is difficult for an English speaker, in a fucking week and spoke it to natives and was able to answer questions. This man is gifted, beyond fucking gifted. I just don't know why you can't see that.
Well, most of the smartest people don't consider themselves gifted. Stephen Hawking for example, doesn't think he is worthy of being compared to Albert Einstein, even though they are both just as "gifted". It's not a gift, it's human potential. In a sense, he is gifted, because he puts all into learning Icelandic.
I saw the whole documentary, and I feel like they misrepresented the guy. He does have awesome memory, but I am positive he didn't LEARN a new language. All he did was memorize a few grammar rules and some vocabulary (impressive, since he only had a week, but still he was working with a tutor all week). The movie made it sound like he was fluent, and all he expressed was his opinion of the language... I would assume it's something he was prepared to answer.
@munecabravalola Do you not see that there are people who are just gifted, like this man... he understands a language within a weeks time. Thats incredible, people are taught a language over a years time have trouble understanding others or even speaking the language correctly. Wether or not it was staged or not, you dont believe there are true Savants out there... which is sad for you.
@Biginitiald I do know and believe that there are gifted people. And I do think this guy is pretty gifted. I don't believe he is a savant though, and I'm not convinced he learned the language. I think he memorized the language with his incredible memory rather than learned it. I'm disappointed with the filmmakers who sensationalized his ability to learn a language for the sake of documentary's popularity, when it appears to be just memorization.
@munecabravalola he learned it, and memorized it. you dont make any sense. you have to memorize words and what they mean. he did learn it...just as such an accelerated rate that your tiny brain doesn't want to accept it's possible
@ChrisDowneyMusicI have never met a single person who leaned a language by memorizing words only. Surely, knowing some vocabulary is necessary, but understanding the rules of dynamic interactions of words is far more important in what is called "learning" the language. And, he might have been good enough for the movie, but how much did he retain? I'm not trying to offend the guy, I am only expressing my scepticism towards the claims made in the movie. Thanks for insulting me though ;)
@munecabravalola Learning a language to the degree in which you are able to read, write, speak, and listen to it with a high degree on comprehension is so far beyond the realm of simply memorizing vocabulary. The brain simply does not work very efficiently in a strictly recall-only sense.
The words, phrases, grammar, and mechanics all have to have some sort of deep, almost primal meaning to a speaker for a language to truly be comprehended. It becomes a matter of instinct rather than memory.

They are simply markers for that particular performance. In fact, his prior "Bs" might be a BETTER explanation for why learning via language immersion works better, or produces better results, particularly for him. Pimsleur knew this.
