  • greek goddess <3

  • Her voice had the sexiness that Carmen needed, all other singers tried and tried but she was the cherry on the top!

  • Maravillosa.

  • "La vérité de l'accent parlé, de l'accent chanté"... that is what I would say about Callas all together; she makes the word and the tone BELIEVABLE, regarding at which stage of her carrier or the state of her voice. Nobody, absolutely nobody can make opera more believable than her, with her UNIQUE way of unifying music and text, and with the utmost respect for the music she is singing.

Callas sings to SERVE the character, the composer and his music, and already that is unique.

  • Maria Callas ellinida thea.

  • verisimo!

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful video clip. I love it, just because is original, unique and magnifique. Maria Callas the one and the only human being of the last century. I had the blessing to hear Callas for the first time Mexico City,1955. I was only 7 years old. She sang Aida with Di Stefano, Oralia Dominguez and Mario del Monaco. You can listen Gloria All'Egitto and hear the high note that she does....above the orchestra, the chorus and everybody else. It is out of this world.

  • best opera singer..ever!!!

  • que bonito!!!! cool

  • At 3:55 she sounds like she's chasing the orchestra around with a whip! And we know who will run for cover. I would say God bless her, but He so obviously did without MY input. My mother once told me about how when it was revealed that she would soon be showing up unexpectedly at a party, people would whisper with excitement and awe: "Callas is coming!" "Callas is coming!"

  • Que genialidad de mujer!!!!!!!!! ♥

  • No matter which aria I listen to, once I've heard the Callas version I start missing something in the others. Her recordings are pure genius. You can hear at her prime she put pressure on everyone working with her to do their absolute best. The subject of this aria is much more suited to a faster interpretation.

  • wow...just wow...

    100/10

  • Larry David brought me here

  • briljant, muy hermosa, just great

  • better french diction than a lot of french singers...crazy!

  • beautifully executed. so much control conveyed as spontaneity. she sings in structure and yet molds the emotions as if she sang it for the first time.

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX i like it and i'm heterosexual

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX i am not gay and you are a sucker that you hate this kind of music

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX

My younger sister is deaf and even she loves this music. I swear hearing is wasted on people like you.

  • @TrippinLucy go and listen to bands such as : bowling for soup , my chemical romance , fall out boy (or otherwise known as proper music)

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX

Actually I listen to that kind of music also, and like it very much. However I don't see the relevance between that genre of music and this. Proper music to me is anyone with talent, and this woman certainly had it, so don't come onto videos and slate people who enjoy Opera just because you can not understand the art behind it.

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX That´s pop shit.. I love rock and metal, but real rock, not played on every fucking TV station. And btw, to answer another comment of yours, I love this music too (and I´m not gay..)

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX

Can't tell if trolling, or just stupid...

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX It just takes people with taste.

  • @TammworthXxXAZZaX YOU IGNORANT YOUTUBER!!! im gay and PROUD OF IT!!! and i love this kind of music. learn some respect will ya!!! how dare you come here and say such hatful things. not only are you bashing great music but you are also being very predjudice HOW RUDE

  • Anna Caterina Antonacci "Habanera" from Carmen Here you retard listen to this and tell me if that is gay....

  • Awesome! She is the most one could ever hope for in a soprano.

  • Maria Callas is unique for ever

  • Je trouve son français chanté fantastique. Cet air est enlevant. La précision qu'elle a est exceptionnelle.

  • absolument irrésistible !! Callas est la plus GRANDE !!!

  • Brava

  • Bravo. Bravo. A true great.

  • I've just 'discovered' Maria tonight out of random curiosity. I don't know anything about these discussions of her vocal abilities and so on. All I know is that I have a new found love of her, her voice and music.

  • @LadyGrinningSoulDiva enjoy your adventure :)

  • @LadyGrinningSoulDiva This night, this has also happened to me. Spectacular.

  • @juxtapotato She was certainly one of the greats. i have since learned more about her and her art and I'm transfixed utterly

Straodinaria.

  • My God, how can you compare Maria Callas and Anna Netrebko. Maria Callas is just beyond anybody's reach. Callas is just a complete phenomena!

  • @piyurx78

lol So Katherine Jenkins isn't THAT good?

  • @piyurx78 she is definately one of my favorites - critics say that her performance is strange, not comparable with other, quoting that all her vocal problems are present, but i dont care, she was and she is devine! she is also one of the few who managed to match beutiful voice with excellent french accent. very rare in our days. just listen to other opera divas singing the same part - beautiful voice, with dreadfull accent.

  • @piyurx78 It's just one's own taste, don't you think? Because I reckon there IS more to it than knowledge of the world of opera at the technical level - for example, I have never claimed to be an opera buff - but, actually, I have never particularly cared for Callas' voice...to me,.it had a hardness on the "finishing" edge of her notes - (even though I know she was cosidered one of the greatest there has ever been...!!!) Oh, well...to each his/her own, I guess!!

  • " I would rather have two years as Maria Callas then twenty years as anyone else"...Beverly Sills

  • She pronounces the French nicely. Bumbry sounds really nice too however, her French was just less accented. J'dore cette musique!

  • callas is heaven

  • SUPERB!!!!

  • *says aggresively* i am going to favorite this o-o

  • I think this is just spectacular - totally enthralling.

  • what a pity that she never sung with Mario Lanza. two great voices ever heard

  • brilliant.....

  • The BEST Carmen of all!!!!!!!!

  • @ferricskin

    1. It personally my opinion

    2. And with whom that opera?

  • Maria Callas had an incredible "fach", or line. It was so focused on the hard palette and resonating in the mask, cascading equally well with elision on the ascent or decent. An incrediblely relaxed tongue, and open throat and amazing appogio/chest support/color. Great Bel Cantnista! Thrilling and moving emotional interpretation!

  • @ferricheart I think most people (well oke, speaking for myself) don't care about the technical stuff. I can't sing, I don't know how one should sing. I just know that I like this, it sounds lovely.

Who would you suggest listening to?

  • Comment removed

  • @psyche8 @psyche8 Maria Callas, Angela Gheorghiu, Magdalena Kozena, Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman, Laura Claycomb, Charlotte Hellekant, Tuva Semmingsen, Inger Dam Jensen, Virginia Zeani, Grace Bumbry, Marilyn Horne, Joan Sutherland, Jennifer Larmore, (in order of my favs, though I don't really like Larmore, her diction in Carmen's "Habanera" hurts my ears, but her voice in other operas is exquisite)
  • @dangmills Thanks, I'll check them out!

  • @ferricheart Filaredo, Mommy should put a star on your forehead for persistence!! Yes, you are a persistent little devil, I'll give you that. You're also a fucking asshole, I'll give you that also! But you like the abuse you're getting, even though it's negative attention, it's attention for your damaged little ego. Poor kid, you have no life, other than pecking away at the keyboard in your mother's basement!!

  • @angelovocci

Well put. And so true! :)

  • If ever there was a poster child for not giving a fach, it's La Divina.

    Tra la la la !

  • tcradical- Yes because WE LOVE HER!!!

  • No one like Callas!

  • Wow. she is absolutely outstanding! One of my inspirations...really. I love her.

  • How completely AMAZING, how sensual....oh Maria, wonderful!

  • FUR MUTTY

    VON KARYNA KLINCKWORT

  • C'est quelque chose!

  • Wonderful...is delight for hear...

  • she could hold a note like know one I have ever heard

  • best mezzo ever

  • @belmanotre YOU ARE ONE STUPID PERSON. DO NOT WRITE IF YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF SUBJECT MATTER.

  • @belmanotre YOU ARE DISGRACE. I WILL COMMUNICATE AS ONE WISHES.

  • to read your comment`s a normal ,was natsy cruel ,you can`t call a pregenat female fat,

  • there are good sopranos, great sopranos, excellent sopranos, but only one MARIA CALLAS

  • How silly to mention Netrebko in the same breath as Calls. While she improves with time, she still has poor technique and is extemely uneven in her singing. Not artistic at all. And her acting is so stilted and artificial to destroy the whole illusion of reality. I always feel she wants to look at the camara and say, "How am I doing? And don't I look beautiful?"

  • I've always preferred the slightly faster opening tempo in this rendition to some others I've heard. It has a less heavy feel yet still kinetic. I get a sense of a momentum. I also feel it foreshadows the torrid--almost maniacal--finish. When it's done with a slower tempo, it has a more noticeable OOMPA OOMPA feel. I am biased, of course, because my exposure to this song began with this recording.

  • you know guys, this war betwenn netrebko and callas is really getting old, i am a fan of both of them..CALLAS is A legend and NETREBKO is One of the best singers in the 21st century.. we should be happy for what we HAD and what we HAVE in the world of opera...

  • Netrebko is an absolute zero compared to Callas. How can people be so foolish to even try to compare them is unbelievable!

  • Yes, that Netrebko is quite a slut! Look at her stupid dirty routines. Anna is now the whore of opera!

  • Comment removed

  • @andreea94a haha, well, all I can say, I never really remembered what Violetta's profession was before I saw Netrebko sing her arias... never was there a truer look...

  • Anna Netrebko is also an opera singer.

  • wonderfull! by the way: who is anna?

  • Anna Netrebko

  • give me a break! Callas is the best!

  • Anna Netrebko is from Russia, she's an opera singer.

  • Anna Netrebko is a russian soprano.

  • Do you not know Anna Netrebko? She's a famous Russian singer.

  • Yes, Anna Netrebko sings opera but not yet on this aria.

  • No one like Callas...

  • I love it!

  • @galehout: Thanks pal!

    Maria's pronounciation is simply perfect.

Her voice is strong and pure, but so human, and sensual!

I DO LOVE this interpretation of "la chanson bohème"...

  • tru luuu luuu luuu 8->

  • I love Callas!

  • Just great!

  • Great voice, seems to be very fast and hard to do that!

  • This Carmen like a tempest. Fierce, fiery and burning hot. Amazing!

  • @Neanderthalgirl oh pleeease. Don't spam this upload of her. I would be very thankful.

  • Wow. When she started singing, I was completely taken aback. Normally, the singers singing this 'aria' or song, I don't know, they somehow shout, they don't sing it as 'round' as Maria does. I very much like this recording!

  • What a pity that she never sung this role on stage. She is unbelievable.

    Thanks for posting.

  • @Aetion it's a pity she never performed many roles - apart from whatever her critics say of her no singer ever invested her performances with more intelligence, understanding of character or sheer dramatic power than La Divina

  • @ferricskin REWARD!! REWARD!! REWARD!! $500.00 US Postal Money Order sent to anyone who PMs me with the confirmed identity of the person posting under the name: ferricskin, Ferricheart, Neanderthalgirl, Gandor, etc. This is not a joke.

  • @ferricskin I'm not talking about talking vocal technique - I'm talking about the ability to intelligently interpret a character, not just sing - which is what great opera requires - she was among the greatest "interpreters" of classical music for female vocalists - I agree she wasn't the greatest singer - I'd place many female classical singers ahead of her if I were just rating the voice: Ponselle, Marian Anderson, Tetrazzini, Flagstad and even the Nazi Whoremonger Schwarkopf.

  • @Chutson353

    I couldn't agree more! You're absolutely right!!

  • What are you people writing on this website. Get a life! You are all immature morons!

  • No one will equal La Divina, not now, not ever.
