It's very hard to believe he's acually gone even though he died before I was born. Maybe if he just hadn't dove down so far into the sea that day...why do these things happen?
I'm so glad this particular video is flooded with comments to do with how good-looking a man Denny was. I'm in complete agreement. The gentleman was a total ham. He was the world's most masculine guy. Not only that; he was the world's most physical and passionate guy, too. I should know- I own early '70s Beach Boys material. Anyway, this world is severely lacking in masculinity, and Denny had it in abundance, man. And, argh, on a side note, he was in the best rock group ever.
@oceanstreat: On the one hand, I agree the beard did cover up his handsome face, on the other, I think it gave him a "ruggedly handsome Norwegian guy" kind of look.
That windswept shot at :45 shows his athleticism - the only real surfer in the group - shirtless and just holding the camera - that pic is like an iconic shot of him. Wow. Who knew when that was snapped that he would die so young - and that there would be such sadness. In that pic, he is an American surfer archetype. Young and full of health. I like to remember him in that way.
Me and a buddy met Dennis way back when at the old Peaches records store in Dearborn Mi. He was there promoting his new solo album. He was very friendly and gave a firm handshake. My friend took a photo of Dennis and myself which I"ve been showing-off all these years. Sure was sad that he died so young.
Truth be told, Dennis was the only actual surfer in the whole group, now i think thats a good enough reason to use that song. They deff. should have a surf contest in his honor if they don't already. I miss him.
Ah, the bitter sweet ballad of the Beach Boys. Too bad Dennis didn't get more of a chance to shine. Oh yeah, Surf's Up is one of the greatest songs of the 20th Century.
Dennis was the best looking Beach Boy that's for sure. When he grew that beard it was akin to when Jim Morrison grew his. Your sitting there thinking, "you know, he really looks better without it."
I agree about the beard. He was so naturally handsome, and the beard just covered it all up, and it certainly didn't add to his looks. I feel a bit self-conscious about saying so, considering he's unfortunately deceased. And I know the argument..."It's his life, he's an artist, he can do what he wants." I don't argue that. Just saying he looked so much nicer without it.
thought you would have used dennis singing 'you are so beautiful', however, 'surf's up' imho is the greatest pop song ever written by pop's greatest writer and arranger, before arseholes like mike love tore him down.
i knew dennis and his wife shawn. i used to babysit her when she was young, then i met dennis after they were married. he was the best of the beach boys in kindness and humility. he never acted like a big shot

@ZANTEDESH A very studly dude indeed. That picture reminds me of Galen Rowell, the late photojournalist / mountain climber.
