5K back then would be 46K now, which is just under Americas GDP per capita (48K last time I checked). Considering Americas economy was growing rapidly at the time, this would have been A LOT (no, a fucking shit ton) of cash for your average American. Also, not much of an education was required, so your average-joe poor farm boy could have joined. Pretty good if you ask me.... (remember, it says MORE than 5K, leaving room for money $)
