it was 5k because training and maintince for the average soldier was cheaper back then. also because an airmens life expectancy during and just afer WWII wasn't high
5K back then would be 46K now, which is just under Americas GDP per capita (48K last time I checked). Considering Americas economy was growing rapidly at the time, this would have been A LOT (no, a fucking shit ton) of cash for your average American. Also, not much of an education was required, so your average-joe poor farm boy could have joined. Pretty good if you ask me.... (remember, it says MORE than 5K, leaving room for money $)
u ever been to a military doctor? ever ate food at the dining facility? ever lived in military housing? it was shitty then. its still shitty now. i hate when people say this shit. i would have much rather have got paid more and provided my own housing, food and doctor.
Don't you idiots realize how much $5000 was worth back then?....

5000 a year wasn't bad in the 50s; especally when you factor in free food, housing & medical care. Plus, you got to kill lots of godless communists.

Join the Air Force young man, and pilot your very own B-52! lol
That was the golden age of being an Air Force pilot. Jet fighter command, SAC, total cutting edge.
